What is Agility?

Agility (read article) is an exciting dog sport where you guide your dog over a series of obstacles within a set time limit. You don't need to be in great shape and your dog doesn't need any prior obedience training to enjoy Level I agility classes.

Our agility course meets requirements for all levels of AKC and UKC agility competition, and provides a safe and fun experience for family pets and competition dogs alike. Each obstacle adjusts to fit any size of dog from Chihuahua to Great Dane.

While we cater mainly to pet owners, our students of all ages compete in a large local UKC agility trial.  Click here to read the happy outcome of this recent event (August 2003).

Agility Classes at A-1 Dog Training

Our 6-week outdoor agility sessions cost $80 and are limited to eight dogs per class. Class schedules and registration info are shown on our home page, when available (Apr-Nov).  Pencil in a few extra weeks at the end of your six-week session in case we have to make up rain days.

  Beginner

If your dog or puppy has never seen an agility obstacle in his life, Beginner is the class for you. Dogs will learn to traverse each obstacle, and short sequences will be practiced with jumps set at their lowest heights (8"). This class is open to dogs 16 weeks through 10+ years of age.

  Intermediate

Intermediate is for dogs that have completed Beginner, or that have prior knowledge of the obstacles. We will work on specific problems using 4-8 obstacle sequences to illustrate a particular handling technique. We will also work on increasing jump heights toward the dog's full competition height.  The course is designed to prepare your dog for AKC Novice or UKC AgI competition.

Our Student Photos on the Web

Some of our students have so much fun in class, they have posted their agility photos on the web.  You can look at them by clicking on the links below:
