Mounds Pet Food Warehouse (Madison, WI) Newsletter, October 1997

You can prepare your dog now for the Martians and witches that will visit your home this Halloween. Although many dogs act as usual, barking at the doorbell and jumping happily on the kiddies, others may rush the door, then become startled when they see what is there. In a few cases, dogs may feel threatened enough to growl, snap, or lunge at visiting trick-or-treaters. If your dog has menaced visitors in the past, board him overnight or keep him locked away for the evening.  (All outdoor dogs, friendly or not, should be kept indoors on Halloween for their own safety.)

Friendly dogs with house privileges should be introduced before Halloween to the sight of people wearing big hats, masks or sheets over their heads. Let Zippy check out each article of clothing by setting it on the floor with some treats. Allow her to approach each article on her own time and praise investigative behavior.

Next, don the costume yourself and move normally about the house. If Zippy stays relaxed, proceed with "monster" noises and/or arm movements. These should initially be of low volume and short duration, and should be directed away from your dog. Follow with reassuring praise and treats.

On Halloween night, avoid Zippy's jumping on trick-or-treaters by keeping her leash on. One owner can hold Zippy's leash and give her treats for sitting while the other dispenses candy to the kiddies. If you are alone with Zippy, tie her leash to something immobile while you answer the door.  (Never haul Zippy to the door by her collar or she may feel trapped and bite a visitor.)  If Zippy is demonstrating her good manners, give visitors a doggy treat to toss or hand her.
