Turkey, Spring 2007 (cont.) |

After returning to Istanbul, we stayed in Sultanahmet, the neighborhood that is home to the Blue Mosque (below), the Hagia Sofia museum (both photos above), the Hippodrome (at right), and many other famous landmarks. We visited many of the sights together on Thursday, and I saw the remainder on Friday, luckily the only day that Şansal had to work. On Saturday, our final full day together, we strolled for several hours through the European side of Istanbul, then took a ferry across the Bosphorus to explore the neighborhood of Kadiköy, home to many antique shops and a lively market (bottom of page). We finished the evening with a movie and dinner at a wonderful restaurant. The movie proved to be an interesting experience. Şansal had mentioned that we could see any American movie, as they would be in English with Turkish subtitles. So I suggested the Mel Gibson historical film "Apocalypto." |

Unfortunately, I failed to remember that the unique thing about that particular movie was that it was filmed entirely in Mayan... So just minutes into the movie, I could tell I was in trouble, with only Mayan dialog and Turkish subtitles and no English. Luckily, Şansal handled the situation with aplomb, expertly translating the subtitles into English and whispering them to me for the entire movie. This is only one illustration of how thoughtful he is, to say nothing of his marvelous linguistic ability!
