The first well-witnessed official national shorthand competition in the United States was held in 1909. There have been 25 National Speed Contest Champions (19 males, six females) from 1909 to present. Included here are the historically noteworthy records set by contestants since that inaugural year--at speeds up to 280 words per minute.
The 1909 competition ranged in speed from 160 to 280 words per minute and required passing only two takes of seven offered. The first champion, Willard B. Bottome, won with 12 errors on the 207 Jury Charge (intended to be 220) and 78 errors on the 280 QA. The Q and A designations were counted and dictated.
The 1910 competition introduced the offering of Literary at 200 and/or 220, Jury Charge at 240, and QA at 280 words per minute. Clyde H. Marshall won the championship with 39 errors on the 200 Literary, 85 errors on the 240 Jury Charge, and 62 errors on the 280 QA.
Many of today's writers have reached impressive accuracy on material of even greater speed and difficulty. The contests from 1909 through 1914 allowed a surprising 10 percent error margin. The contests from 1919 through the present have allowed the less lenient 5 percent error margin.
No United States national contests were held from 1915 through 1918, in 1920, nor from 1928 through 1951.
The 1914 competition was the only contest which allowed machine writers--until 1952. Nathan Behrin, a Pitman writer, was second to a stenotypist on the 220 material in 1914, but Behrin won overall as the only contestant qualifying on three high takes to include 280.
The 240 Jury Charge was raised to 260 words per minute in 1926 to complement the then-standard 220 Literary and the well-in-place 280 QA. The 1926 competition (continuing through the present) also eliminated the counting and dictating of the Q and A designations in the 280 take. The 1926 modifications significantly boosted the difficulty of the contests.
No nonmachine-shorthand writer has won the national championship since 1927.
The 1958 competition replaced the 260 Jury Charge with the somewhat more difficult 230 Legal Opinion still included today.
The NCRA National Speed Contest utilizes material of random density and therefore of varying difficulty from quarter minute to quarter minute and from year to year (with the exception of the 1990 Legal Opinion, which averaged 199 words per minute at random word count rather than 230 because the material was mistakenly counted out syllabically--and which resulted in five zero-error transcriptions). The National Realtime Contest is also by word count of random density.
The National Court Reporters Association shorthand examinations (being the Registered Professional Reporter, Registered Merit Reporter, and Certified Realtime Reporter RPR, RMR, and CRR) are currently counted out syllabically to obtain a 1.4 standard word density throughout.
The World Championship INTERSTENO (also called INTERINFO) Literary competitions (which are dictated at increasing syllabic speeds each minute) in English are syllabically even within each quarter minute of each progressively faster minute, but the difficulty often reaches an overall density of 2.1 or greater. The final such minute in the international competitions then typically has reached a speed from competition to competition of about 280 to 315 words per minute as calculated by standard syllabic count, or the equivalent of about 260 to 295 by the most typical National Speed Contest Literary standards. In 2001, at the international competition in Hannover, Germany, the speed in English reached 490 syllables in the tenth (final) minute, or 274 actual Literary words per minute, the equivalent of 350 words per minute by 1.4 RPR and RMR standards. This fact renders impossible any fair comparison between the languages to determine an overall winner for 2001. Beginning with the 2003 Congress in Rome, Italy, there were 15 minutes of dictation presented in three five-minute takes, at progressive speeds per minute, under new formulas for speed and for grading.

LITTLE-KNOWN, WELL-KNOWN,
OR STRIKING NATIONAL CONTEST TRIVIA FACTS:
** Nathan Behrin heavily promoted termination of the national contest only after losing repeatedly following his fifth championship.
** Although William Cohen tied for first place overall with twin brother Arnold before going on to place first overall three more times, he is widely known as only a three-time national champion because Arnold received the trophy in the tie year in recognition of his own third championship.
** In the 1971 Legal Opinion, Charles A. Boyer was graded to have one error--a new accuracy record in that category at that time. His error was the correction to "nor to" of the error "not to" contained in the original contest dictation text. The version which was published in the national magazine as the contest was actually the text as corrected by Charles but for which he was penalized. Some have argued that Charles A. Boyer's 1971 Legal Opinion was in fact the first perfect paper turned in at national competition.
** After enjoying his 1973 national championship trophy for a total of 15 minutes, Charles A. Boyer never saw the trophy again. Fellow contestant J. Edward Varallo informed him a quarter century later that he, Varallo, had likely disposed of it along with some of his own later-acquired trophies years earlier with the understanding that Charles did not want his trophy. That understanding was incorrect.
** When Charles A. Boyer won his sixth national championship in 1983, the Boyers took home all the gold. Chuck won the Literary, and Karla Wollin Boyer won the Legal Opinion and Testimony.

** The first year in which computers were allowed in the National Speed Contest was 1985. That is also the first year in which a perfect paper was turned in transcribed by computer. Charles A. Boyer achieved 100 percent accuracy on the 230 Legal Opinion in 1985. Karla Wollin Boyer had one error, also using computer transcription. Diane K. Kraynak also had one error but did not use computer that year.
** Howard R. Lubin and Diane K. Kraynak are the only national speed contestants to win the overall championship without winning any of the individual takes. Howard placed second in all three sections in 1968 to take the overall championship. Diane won overall twice without an individual win: In 1978 Diane was second, fifth, and second in the three categories in achieving the overall win; in 1988 she won overall having placed second in each of the three takes.
** With Karla Wollin Boyer's national championship in 1987, the Boyers became the first and still only husband and wife to each achieve national champion status. Karla and Charles currently have 12 national championships between them.
** The first year in which the top three positions in the National Speed Contest were held by women was 1987 (Karla Wollin Boyer 15 errors, Diane K. Kraynak 31 errors, Candace K. Braksick 38 errors).
** The first National Speed Contest trophy awarded under the name National Court Reporters Association (after the name National Shorthand Reporters Association was abandoned) went to Karla Wollin Boyer in New York City in 1991.

** At the 1991 National Speed Contest in New York City, Karla Wollin Boyer, wearing pants ("nice pants") as a personal statement protesting the handling of the 1990 National Speed Contest and as a feminist statement on behalf of all women competing at NCRA, became the first female national contestant to appear onstage at the Awards Ceremony attired in anything other than a dress or skirt. (Coincidentally, and perhaps portending more great things to come, Karla was also the first female to wear pants in her high school, bravely taking advantage of the first day the new "dress code" allowed it in early 1970.) Then came the red Swarovski crystal heart tattoo in Reno 2003.
** By winning the international championship in Brussels, Belgium, and also the national championship in New York City, Karla Wollin Boyer in 1991 became the first and still only American to be named World Champion and National Champion in the same year. The feat was repeated in 1998 with Karla's wins in Lausanne, Switzerland, and also in Chicago.
** At the 1995 National Speed Contest in Cleveland, Ohio, Candace K. Braksick became the first and still only speed contestant to receive two perfect scores at one national competition.
** Since the last time Charles A. Boyer won three gold medals in the national championship, in 1977, only two other speed contestants have repeated the feat in the 30-year period following. No one did it in the 1980s. Candace K. Braksick and Karla Wollin Boyer each won all three takes in the 1990s.
** In 1999 Karla Wollin Boyer became the first contestant to qualify overall in the National Speed Contest and also qualify in the National Realtime Contest in the same year.
** Karla Wollin Boyer's century-straddling wins in 1999 and 2000 represent an achievement which cannot be matched for at least 100 years. As millennia-straddling wins, the achievement cannot be matched for at least 1000 years. Karla is the first contestant to accomplish either of those records in the National Speed Contest. Mark Tod Kislingbury achieved each of those records in the National Realtime Contest with wins in 1999 and 2000.
** The state of Michigan can boast the unique honor of having a seven-time champion (Diane K. Kraynak) and two six-time champions (Charles A. Boyer and Karla Wollin Boyer) of the National Speed Contest.
** James E. Bouley has qualified (in at least one section) in 25 National Speed Contests. Karla Wollin Boyer has qualified (overall) in 26 of the national contests.

** Karla Wollin Boyer is the first contestant to qualify overall in the top three in the National Speed Contest as an RDR and also the first to qualify in any position in the National Realtime Contest as an RDR.
** In 2001 Mark Tod Kislingbury became the first contestant to win both the National Realtime Contest and National Speed Contest in the same year. He repeated the feat in 2002. Karla Wollin Boyer won both contests in 2004.
** Record shattered: In 2007 in Dallas, Texas, Mark Tod Kislingbury earned the dubious and presumably less than coveted distinction of winning the National Speed Contest with the most total championship errors ever (100), obliterating National Champion Craig Windsor Wallace's 46-year record, set in 1961, of 75 total errors. Way to go, Mark! It's astounding.

** Karla Wollin Boyer is the first contestant to win five medals (one for every section) in the National Speed Contest and National Realtime Contest at one convention. J. Edward Varallo did it in 2006.

KARLA'S GRADING CHART

KARLA WOLLIN BOYER'S OFFICIAL GRADING CHART FOR NATIONAL SPEED CONTEST INDIVIDUAL CATEGORY AND OVERALL SCORING PURPOSES
TIP: It is incorrect to cut off a percentage at any point without rounding up if the next numeral in order is 5 or greater. It is also improper to round up at any point where the next numeral in order is not 5 or greater. Rounded numbers are noted below. Rounded numbers must not be further rounded to a shorter place without first carefully determining the original number prior to initial rounding. Carrying out to thousandths is always better than to hundredths for National Speed Contest grading.
