City Lights

Screenplay by Charles Chaplin
Directed by Charles Chaplin

The blind flower girl that he loves cannot “see” him, and that provides the framework for this film, a film that says more about love than other films that are mere pretenders of the same subject.

“You can see now?”

“Yes. I can see now.”

Chaplin’s acting in the final scene, especially the last shot of the movie, may be the best acting I have ever seen. Face to face with the girl, the Tramp feels many emotions at once—shame, fear, bravery, pain, tentativeness, love, bliss, and joy—and Chaplin conveys them all in an intense close-up. Incredible!
