Rocky

Screenplay by Sylvester Stallone
Directed by John G. Avildsen
I recently viewed Rocky for the first time in years and was struck by just how good this movie is. I love the stillness of the movie; for all of its fighter/boxing storyline, it is the stillness that shines through: the pre-dawn Rocky workout that begins in his neighborhood alley, the visit to the Spectrum arena the night before the fight. The money shot, of course, takes place at the Philadelphia Art Museum. When Rocky reaches the top of the steps to Bill Conti’s music and the camera circles around to show the Philly skyline, it’s a magical cinematic moment—a transcending moment for the viewer.
