| As the only foreign film and musical on my list, this Cannes Film Festival winner and Oscar nominated film is cinema at its best. Every word of dialogue is sung. A 20-year old Catherine Deneuve stars in her first major film in this symphony of color and music that makes even the hardest of hearts sing. As I viewed it for the first time, I was struck by how powerfully cinematic this film is; in fact, several times I caught myself leaning forward on my chair—not in suspense—but in deep appreciation of its style and form. It might be the most romantic movie I’ve ever seen, and that, indeed, is high praise. | |||
