Between South Station and Braintree, the line runs parallel to the Red Line.
Although we are not going that far, this train is bound for Kingston.
This trip starts out by going over the same bridge used by the Dorchester Branch, and AMTRAK trains to and from the Southampton Yard.
On your left as we pass over the bridge, you will see the Cabot Yard, home to the Red Line. The rapid transit line runs underground through South Boston, but the yard is at grade. The lead to the yard runs parallel to the Old Colony trunk until the junction between the portal, which is also the flyover where the Braintree and Ashmont branches of the Red Line split and join.
The commuter line shares station stops with the Red Line at JFK/U-Mass, Quincy Center, and Braintree.
At Braintree we detrain and enjoy our first night of rest after a very busy afternoon on the rails.
No doubt some of you left the group early to return to various hotels around the Boston area. No matter where you sleep tonight, please get a good night's sleep but double-check those alarm clocks. Saturday will be a full, 12-hour day on the rails, for those who choose to spend the entire day with us. If you're leaving us for good, thanks for joining us and please stay in touch via e-mail.
