Green Line "D" or "E"

Haymarket to Park Street

And we're back on the trolleys once again. We did the "D" and "E" branches this morning, and now we are going to ride the "B" and "C" lines. In order to do that from Haymarket, we must board the first southbound car that comes, a "D" or "E", and take it to Government Center or Park Street, changing to a "B" trolley there. I chose Park Street as the transfer point so you can get a feel for the large station and understand the process of transferring between the different routes. And I chose the "B" for the outbound trip because the walk on Chestnut Hill Avenue to the "C" line is in a downhill direction.

The ride from Haymarket to Park Street is no more than five minutes, over a portion of the Green Line already covered. Once we get to Park Street, we alight there. You can clean out the schedule racks while we are on the platform, and then together we will board a "B" trolley for Boston College.

Green Line "B"

Park Street to Boston College

Once we board the first "B" car, we will retrace our previous travels of this morning through the subway tunnel. At the Kenmore station (which is the closest station to Fenway Park), there are four tracks and two island platforms. The "B" line uses the center tracks in both directions, while the "C" and "D" run by the walls.

As we climb out of the tunnel onto Commonwealth Avenue, we now travel northwest. The street changes directions in places, and the line curves with it. We are actually going to make an arc that runs northwest and then eventually southwest towards the other two routes in the area, the "C" and "D".

Early in the median running, there are several stops, spaced a few blocks apart, for the sprawling Boston University campus.

Where the street curves from westbound to southwestbound, that is where the former "A" line to Watertown intersected. If you look at where the median of Brighton Street once was, you can see where the rail right-of-way was paved over.

Up and over Chestnut Hill, we pass the avenue of the same name. You can see here the tracks that run down Chestnut Hill Avenue to the south, to access the yard at Cleveland Circle. Soon we will be walking here, but first we will go onward to Boston College.

Another several minutes we arrive at the loop that marks the terminus of the "B" trolley line at Boston College. For those who might wish a quick bite, there is an Expresso Cafe, College Subs, and Maddie's Market (a convenience store). On my preview mission I did not readily see any restroom facilities here.

Green Line "B"

Boston College to Chestnut Hill Avenue

We board another car on the inbound side of the loop for a relatively short ride. We will only go as far as Chestnut Hill Avenue, whose station is just beyond the street intersection. WARNING: The stop here in the median of Commonwealth Avenue is very close to traffic. Please be careful and watch all children as we make our way back to the intersection to cross the eastbound lanes of Commonwealth Avenue.
