MTA Rapid Transit

The base MTA Rapid Transit fare is $1.60. There are no additional zone charges. There are no discounted transfers available if your ride takes more than one vehicle.

The heavy rail Metro works on a pay-as-you-enter system. Every time you enter the system you must pay another $1.60 fare. But if we simply reverse direction at the end of a line, we don't have to pay another fare since we are already within the fare paid area. There are vending machines in each station that will sell you a token for $1.60. The token is then placed in the faregate for admission into the system.

Senior Citizens can ride for a base fare of $0.55 per ride. Children age 6 and above pay full adult fare (except children in area schools who participate in a local discount program). Children under age 6 ride free.

Light rail works on a proof-of-payment system similar to the light rail lines in other cities. One must be holding a valid ticket that has been time stamped (validated) before boarding. If a trip cannot be completed before the expiration time on the ticket, another ticket must be purchased and validated.

The MTA rides we expect to take on Thursday will cost as follows:

MARC Commuter Rail

MARC fares are based on zones, much like other commuter rail operators. When a ticket office is open or a ticket vending machine is available at the station, tickets must be purchased before riding, and they are collected by a crew member. A $3 surcharge is added to the cost of the ticket purchased from the train crew if a ticket office was open before the train's scheduled departure time, or if a ticket vending machine is present. (MARC tickets can be purchased from Amtrak Quick-Trak machines in Baltimore Penn Station and Washington Union Station.) MARC one-way tickets are not available by mail or internet.

Tickets are valid only between the two stations printed on the ticket.
