Dallas Links

Created 4/6/05; Updated 11/2/06

This is this website's obligatory "links" page. It is designed to give you a further background on the Dallas area.

Green Signals: Rails we will ride, places we will go

Official homepage of Dallas Area Regional Transit. Administers 2 light rail lines, the bus system, and has taken over operations of the McKinney Avenue Streetcar, now known as the M-Line.

The official page of the McKinney Avenue Transit Authority from when it was a separate operation. This page is more descriptive about the equipment than DART's M-Line page is.

Official homepage of Trinity Railway Express, the commuter carrier that runs between Dallas and Fort Worth, with perhaps its third most important stop near Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport. Run jointly by Dallas Area Rapid Transit and Fort Worth Transporation Authority.

Official homepage of Fort Worth Transportation Authority (The T), which runs the local bus system in Fort Worth.

Reunion Tower

The "signature" of the Dallas skyline, this tower will give us an overview of the railroad tracks that serve the area.

Official homepage of the National Railroad Passenger Corporation, whose TEXAS EAGLE serves Dallas and Fort Worth. The HEARTLAND FLYER also serves Fort Worth.

Southwest Railfan Primer

A good starter source of information about the basics of Dallas railroading.

Age of Steam Railroad Museum

This museum is located in Fair Park. It is accessible only by bus. It may be a worthwhile trip if we arrive on time on Sunday. Since it is only open Wednesdays through Sundays, Sunday afternoon is our only chance to visit.

Red Signals: Rails we won't ride, places we won't go

Tandy Subway

The Tandy Subway ran since 1963 between the basement of a downtown department store (later a discount shopping mall) and its remote parking lot near the Trinity River. We're not riding it because Radio Shack Corporation closed it in August of 2002.

Formerly known as the Tarantula, this tourist railroad's bread and butter run goes from Grapevine to the Fort Worth Stockyards District. From there, it makes a shorter run to South Fort Worth, before returning to the Stockyards and then Grapevine. Time does not allow us to do this. In addition, we would only be able to take a bus from the Intermodal Transportation Center to the Stockyards for the shorter run within Fort Worth. There is no public transportation to Grapevine.

Las Colinas People Mover

A two-route People Mover system that serves the office/hotel/retail complex at Las Colinas in Irving. Reportedly the system is underutilized, so its hours were cut back to several hours per day at lunchtime on weekdays only. The system also may not be open to those without business in Las Colinas. Another site with more photos is here.

DFW Airport SKYLINK

This new system, which is set to open sometime in the spring of this year, replaces the older AirTrans (also known as Airport Train and TRAAIN) people mover system. Time does not allow us to ride it. However if you fly into DFW Airport you most likely will get to experience it.
