How to Feed Suet and Suet Dough

There are a variety of Wild Birds Unlimited Suet Feeders designed to hold from one to four cakes or one tub of suet or suet dough. Wild Birds Unlimited Suet Cages are simple, inexpensive feeders consisting of a square, vinyl-coated wire cage. The Wild Birds Unlimited Tail-Prop Feeder is specially-designed for attracting Woodpeckers. If too many Starlings are enjoying your suet, try a Wild Birds Unlimited Upside Down Hanging Suet Feeder. This feeder is designed to make Starlings hang upside down to reach the suet, which is something they are not likely to do for more than a few seconds. Woodpeckers, Nuthatches and Chickadees can easily cling upside down and will entertain you with their delightful acrobatics.

You can also feed suet in suet bags or suet logs. Just fill the bag or the holes in the log with any Wild Birds Unlimited Suet or Suet Dough. Suet feeders can hang from trees or from a wide variety of Wild Birds Unlimited hardware. Ask about our Unlimited Mounting And Hanging System.TM

Cold and Warm Weather Suets: The Seasonal Difference

Cold Weather Suets

Melting Point 100º F • 38º C

Wild Birds Unlimited carries a variety of flavors of suet that can be used year-round. In cooler weather, these suets stay soft and provide an excellent source of energy. In warmer weather, we recommend keeping the suet in the shade or using a suet feeder with a wooden top.

Warm Weather Suets

Melting Point 150º F • 66º C

Wild Birds Unlimited Suet Doughs have been developed to take the heat. The primary advantage of our suet doughs is their higher melting point. Suet dough will generally not melt in the Summer. For best results, use when temperatures are at or above freezing.

What Kind of Fun Can You Have With Suet In Your Backyard?

(All kinds.)

Offering suet at your backyard feeding station is a great way to attract a wide variety of playful, insect-eating birds–especially Woodpeckers. Chickadees and Nuthatches love our suet, too.

And, with our fruit-flavored suets and doughs, you may be able to attract fruit-eating birds like Bluebirds, Mockingbirds, Orioles and more!

The Suet Story

Suet is a high energy, pure fat substance which birds enjoy year-round. And, Wild Birds Unlimited Suets and Doughs are produced from the highest quality beef kidney fat, which is an extremely high calorie energy source of food for wild birds. Suet is especially valuable in the winter when insects are harder to find and birds need many calories to keep their bodies warm.

You shouldn’t worry, however, that birds will become dependent on the suet you provide. Birds that eat suet will still seek natural food sources such as insects, insect eggs and grubs to maintain a well-rounded diet.

Use this guide or ask your Wild Birds Unlimited Certified Birdfeeding Specialists how you can attract a wide variety of birds with any of our suets or doughs.

Rendered Useful

All Wild Birds Unlimited Suets and Suet Doughs are rendered and refined to remove the impurities that can cause spoilage. That means you can feed our suet year-round, easily and safely.
