Tidy Feeding Solutions

It's Easy to Keep Feeding Area Tidy in the Summer and All Year Round

Here are some suggestions:

Most birds that visit birdfeeders like to pick out several seeds before they find the one they want to eat. Rather than letting the seeds land on the ground, catch them with a Wild Birds Unlimited® Catch-A-Seed Tray™. These trays are a great addition to your existing feeder set-up.

Another tidy feeding idea is to place mulch in the area under the feeder to keep it neat. When it is time to clean the area, the mulch can be turned under or removed and replaced with new mulch. To contain the mulch, create a border with stones, logs or other decorative objects.

If you want to place a feeder on your deck and are concerned about the accumulation of seed hulls, we recommend deck hardware from our Advanced Pole System. The pole swings out away from the deck and then swings back for easy filling. Choose from our top, side or clamp-on deck pole mounts.

Selecting the best seed or seed blend for your feeder(s) is important in keeping a feeding area tidy. Some discount seed blends contain fillers such as wheat, flax or oats which are not preferred by most birds and end up on the ground below your feeders. Wild Birds Unlimited Custom Seed Blends contain 100% of the seeds birds prefer to eat with no grain fillers that end up under your feeder. Also, try sunflower chips. They are 100 percent edible and are free of the hulls that can collect under your feeder. See the Seed Preference Guide for more information on the blends best suited to your birdfeeding needs.

Specialty feeders like fruit feeders and hummingbird feeders will attract specific birds that are fun to watch while keeping feeding areas tidy.

If your feeder is positioned over a flower bed, there are several options for tidy feeding. You can add a tray, move the feeder or use sunflower chips or our No-Mess Blend in the feeder. Feeding sunflower chips eliminates the hulls which birds don't eat. The Wild Birds Unlimited® Round Seed Tray helps keep your yard tidy by catching seeds before they hit the ground.
