Legal Services: an Introduction

The following list includes most of the legal services providers in New York City.

New York City offers a surprising array of legal services, including law school legal clinics, legal services organizations, lawyer referral services, and pro bono programs. The Legal Aid Society and the Legal Services Corporation are probably the two largest legal services providers in the City, but there are many less well-known providers.

Be forewarned that the mere existence of a legal clinic or legal services organization does not guarantee you representation. Because the demand for legal services in New York City is predictably greater than the supply of free lawyers, access may be limited. I have tried to provide as complete a list of legal services as possible, to maximize your chances of getting representation.
