New York City is home to two big legal services providers offering free representation to low income clients in both civil and criminal cases: the Legal Aid Society and the Legal Services Corporation.

As with law school legal clinics, client access to the Legal Aid Society is restricted. The demand for free legal representation can exceed the supply of Legal Aid lawyers.
