My
personal preference is to check out the latest Top 10 (~200) charts linked
above to see who's hot this week in music, then fire up my Kazaa
Lite, and proceed to download some new music tracks. You can also
build your music collection by ripping your favorite cd's to your computer
hard drive, organizing 20 or so great songs, and burning them onto a custom
cuts cd for car, home, boombox or portable CD player use. An excellent,
easy to use, and very fast ripping program is CDex. CDex
allows full mp3 tag manipulation in an automated process and rips an entire
cd in about 10 minutes.

and then I'll be posting a few great, web-only, mp3 file download links.
The first site link I would suggest for sheer mp3 resources directly available
on the Web is Absolutely
Free Mp3's.com. They also have some quick reviews of various mp3 repository
sites. You might also want to look at the Zeropaid.com
web site for all kinds of music related items for free download and some
excellent music discussion forums. Here is another
great source of web-downloadable mp3's. Full music charts and a wide
selection of easy to retrieve top 40 music. Check it out while it's still
operational! One of my favorite sites for top forty music is The
Music Lover. Although it is not always available, (keep trying though
;-) ) it is a very good site for mp3 files.
Some
Legal Issues
Probably
the first thing anyone should know about mp3 files is that many are copyrighted
material. This makes it illegal to distribute or copy these files without
payment to the copyright owner. As a person who will be greatly influenced
by the choices of our current elected officials, please read the excellent
explanation in layman's terms from the Electronic Frontier Foundation,
or check out the actual
law proposal currently in our congress that will make it illegal to
produce a piece of hardware that will not have a copy-protection device
enabled. There is also the issue of a recent
experiment to "copy-protect" newly issued compact discs.
This copyright is intended to prevent copying a cd to a personal computer,
preventing the new cd owner of copying his/her own cd. Check out this
article and then learn how to easily
defeat the copyright on a some new cd's with a felt tip marker or
some electrical tape.

The following information is for people who use a peer-to-peer program
(like the old Napster program) to download music. This is probably the
quickest way to quickly build a large music collection. For the people
using Kazaa software, you should use Kazaa
Lite to replace your Spy/Ad ware filled Kazaa software. You can download
Kazaa Lite directly from this website, and you're set to download
not only great music selections, but also tons of other files such as
programs, video or about any other kind of computer file you need. If
you liked the old Morpheus program from Musiccity.com ,
you will definitely get into the Kazaa Lite program.
