This is my first (and still ongoing) project: 2 twin-sized puzzle quilts and a wall hanging. The thought of assembling and quilting a "real", full-sized quilt terrified me until my darling husband gave me "More Lap Quilting with Georgia Bonesteel". With her technique you piece, batt, then quilt each block individually, assembling the quilted blocks into a mostly completed quilt. This I could do! I'm hand quilting the teal sashing by outlining the leaves printed on the forest green backing fabric (a light version of which is gracing the background of this page). I guess this could be considered 'backward" by some, but it's a no-brainer and makes a nice pattern on the front. The posts have hand quilted free-hand stars. The blocks and borders are machine quilted.
(More narrative follows the pictures.)
I had intended to make just the 2 quilts, but ended up drawing out so many variations of the 9 patterns used that I couldn't bear to cull them down to only 4! There are actually 10 patterns (and 10 only) used: (viewing the wallhanging, from L->R, T->B) Wedding Ring, Memory Block, Sandhills Star | Jack-in-the-Box, Oriental Star, Carl's Pattern (developed by my oldest son), Hill & Crag | Log Cabin, May Baskets, 25 Block. I tried to make at least one traditional arrangement of each block. Except for the Memory Blocks (with 3 variations), there are 5 variations of each pattern. Each quilt has 2 variations of each, so each is a puzzle quilt by itself, and the 2 together double the fun!
The quilts measure 64" x 90". The wallhanging is 41" x 52".
