Hazard Summary - Acute (short-term) exposure to high levels of elemental
mercury and methyl mercury in humans results in central nervous system
(CNS) effects such as hallucinations and delirium (elemental mercury) and
blindness, deafness, and impaired level of consciousness (methyl mercury).
Effects on the gastrointestinal tract and respiratory system have also
been noted in humans from acute inhalation exposure to elemental mercury.
