following are instructions for removing the PI v5 upgrade along with internet explorer (IE) v5 and outlook express (OE) v5, and thus going back to the previous release of PI v4 along with IE v4 and OE v4. or if you prefer, you can simply revert back to PI v4 but keep your IE v5 and OE v5. note that if you do "downgrade" your IE and OE you should not lose any of your favorites, email addresses, and mail files -- at least according to microsoft. however, there have been some reports of this not being the case, so backing up everything first is (as always) a good idea.  the files and sub-folders you want to back up are located in the two folders:

• \Windows\Application Data\Microsoft

• \Windows\Favorites

also note that you can not mix versions of IE and OE -- they must both be either v4 or v5!

1. first you will need to uninstall IE v5 and OE v5, which will put you back to v4 of both of those. if you want to keep v5 of these programs, but simply revert back to v4 of the PI software, skip to step (6).
   

2. to uninstall IE and OE v5, click on START | SETTINGS | CONTROL PANEL | ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS. in the list of software, scroll to the entry for "microsoft internet explorer 5 and internet tools", click on that line, and then click on the "add/remove" button. in the next dialog box that you get, make sure the option for "restore the previous windows configuration" is selected, and click OK. follow the instructions from there. once the process is complete you will be prompted to re-start windows at this time. it is IMPORTANT that you do re-start at this time.
   

3. after windows re-starts, the restore to IE and OE v4 will finish up, and hopefully all your previous settings will be retained. once it's done, though, you should immediately start OE and check all the settings. if some of the info is missing, here's what you may have to supply:

   smtp (outgoing mail) server:	smtp.prodigy.net
   pop3 (incoming mail) server:	pop.prodigy.net
   nntp (news) server:	news.prodigy.net
   email address:	yourusername@prodigy.net
   logon account name:	yourusername

if you are missing your old mail messages and folders, try selecting FILE | IMPORT | MESSAGES from the OE menu bar, and then select "microsoft outlook express 5" as the client to import from.

4. if you want to stick with the PI v5 software, you should then proceed to double-click your PI icon. you will then get prompted that your browser has been changed, and asked if you want to configure it. you will need to go thru this process, following the on-screen directions.
   

5. at this point you are now running v4 of IE and OE along with PI v5. if you want to stick with PI v5, you're done. if however you want to go back to v4 of PI as well, then continue.
   

6. before proceeding, make sure that you have your PI v5 CD handy, as you will need it to re-install your PI v4. once you are ready, click on START | SETTINGS | CONTROL PANEL | ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS, and now look for the entry "prodigy internet v5". click on it, and then click on the "add/remove" button. once PI v5 has been removed, it is IMPORTANT that you re-start your computer at this time. click on START | SHUTDOWN | RESTART.
   

7. once your computer has re-booted, you will then need to run the PI v4 installation program from your PI v5 CD. it's located in the PIV404 folder on the CD and is named SETUP32.EXE. if you are not familiar with how to run a program directly from your CD, here's how:
   
   put your PI v5 CD in the CD drive. if you then automatically get the installation screen, simply cancel out of it. now open up EXPLORER (START | PROGRAMS | WINDOWS EXPLORER) and in the left-hand pane locate the entry for your CD drive (typically D:). click on that, and in the right-hand side you will see a folder named PIV404. double-click on that folder and then in the right-hand side you will see a file name SETUP32.EXE.  double-click on that to start the PI v4 installation.
   
   you will then be guided thru the re-install of v4. when prompted to re-start your computer, be sure to take that option so that the install will finish. once the computer re-starts, you will get the PI welcome screen and a prompt asking if you are already a member of Prodigy. reply yes there, then select the "i'm a member of PI" option on the next screen.  the install should then complete, and you will be fully back to the PI v4 software.
