Top 5 Walking Tips

Whether you are a beginning walker or an experienced long-distance walker, there are some walking rules of the road that are important for your health, safety and success as a walker.

Wear Good Socks and Shoes: Have your walking shoes fitted at a running store or walking store that has trained clerks and advisors. They should watch you walk in the shoes you try on. In general, I've found that my walking and hiking shoes should be about a half size larger than my dress shoes. Having said that, it's also important that your shoes fit you and you don't slip around in them due to the shoes being too big.

As far as socks, I recommend wicking socks made from a microfiber or merino wool blend. I recommend against cotton socks as they tend to hold in moisture and create an opportunity for blistering.

Dress in Layers: I always say that it makes sense to be a little chilly as you start out your walk. You'll warm up with the exercise. To make this easy, dress in layers. Focus on clothing that wicks, or draws moisture away from you. I recently purchased a polar fleece lightweight vest for winter walking. It keeps my core body warm and, since the fabric is so light, I can wear things under and over it.

Warm Up: Before you head out for that exercise walk, do some warm-up exercises. These should include stretching and starting at a comfortable pace before you break into that racewalking stride. Here's a great stretching routine from About Walking.

Consider Your Stride: As you walk faster and faster, you may have the tendency to over-stride. It's better to take shorter steps than stretch your muscles and take long steps. Besides, you'll end up walking faster. Here's a great article that explains how you really should be walking.

Stay Hydrated: I always worry when I see people hiking or walking without water. Make sure you drink some water before you start out and continue as you walk. If you find yourself thirsty, you are probably starting to get dehydrated. Here's some drinking guidelines for walkers.
