Our schedule has been packed with training, lectures, and assignments.
The daily agenda is written up on the whiteboard in our work
room. |

We have received extensive "reliability training" to make sure
we can identify the physical and behavioral characteristics
of the individual chimps. Here, Lesley shows us the correct
way to enter the data into spreadsheets. |

| There
are many important details to remember. |

After
several days of training, we now spend most of our time collecting
data. The protocols for data collection are different from
the etiquette for visiting with the chimps. We avoid looking
at them directly or communicating with them in any way. Having
lived most of their lives in the presence of people with clipboards,
they do not seem bothered by us.

Chimpanzees
are very territorial, and the chimps at CHCI are no exception.
Even though they are used to people, they occasionally display
and charge to remind us it is their space. Here Loulis charges
during one of our guided interactions. In mid-air, he smacks
the glass with his feet. His hair is standing on end -- being
"pilo-erect" like this shows real agitation!
