The daily grind!

Our schedule has been packed with training, lectures, and assignments. The daily agenda is written up on the whiteboard in our work room.
We have received extensive "reliability training" to make sure we can identify the physical and behavioral characteristics of the individual chimps. Here, Lesley shows us the correct way to enter the data into spreadsheets.
 
There are many important details to remember.

After several days of training, we now spend most of our time collecting data. The protocols for data collection are different from the etiquette for visiting with the chimps. We avoid looking at them directly or communicating with them in any way. Having lived most of their lives in the presence of people with clipboards, they do not seem bothered by us.

Chimpanzees are very territorial, and the chimps at CHCI are no exception. Even though they are used to people, they occasionally display and charge to remind us it is their space. Here Loulis charges during one of our guided interactions. In mid-air, he smacks the glass with his feet. His hair is standing on end -- being "pilo-erect" like this shows real agitation!
