Stick a fork in it, this one's done!!! Just last week (June, 2001) the Chuck Tanner card from this set arrived at my home, ending my pursuit of this classic Topps set. I now have all 407 cards from this great set from baseball's golden era.
I started collecting them because I like the way they look. About a year ago, I started picking them up in earnest, and soon I was hooked. This set was the first Topps issue to feature the standard 2 1/2 inch by 3 1/2 inch size. The key rookies include Frank and Brooks Robinson which are shown above, Don Drysdale, Jim Bunning, and Bill Mazeroski. About the only thing missing from this set is Stan Musial, who did not appear on a Topps card until a year later.
The most challenging part of completing this set was the short-print series four. In most Topps sets, it is the final series, often called the "high numbered" series that was produced in the least quantity. In the case of the '57s it is the fourth of the five series, card numbers 265 through 352, that was produced in the least amount. Series four contains the Brooks Robinson and Bunning rookies as well as Sandy Koufax and six of the 16 team cards (including Brooklyn and the New York Giants).
