1960s Lyrics Quiz

Set your time machines and return with us to the 1960s. It was a decade of change - The Vietnam War, civil unrest, campus protests, Johnson's Great Society, the British Invasion, and a man on the moon just to name a few. The 1960s also gave us many great songs, and that's what this page is all about.

Below are 230 lines from songs of the 1960s. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to identify the title and artist for each of these songs. We will send answers upon request.

You can participate in this page. Like we are doing on the other lyrics quiz pages, we will be tracking the percentage of visitors who correctly identified the lyric and artist. Send your answers to us, and we'll include your guesses in our tally. (Excel spreadsheets available upon request if you want to send your answers that way)

1 The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls
2 Baby, listen baby, don't you treat me this way
3 No phone, no pool, no pets
4 I can't do what ten people tell me to do
5 Daddy's just sleeping and mama ain't around.
6 I'm just mad about saffron
7 My buddies and me are getting real well known
8 Linger on the sidewalk where the neon signs are pretty
9 Bring a nickel, tap your feet
10 I don't need no money, fortune or fame
11 For the morning will bring joy for every girl and boy
12 Don’t want your kisses, that’s for sure
13 Take me for a trip upon your magic swirling ship
14 She could not leave a number but I know who placed the call
15 Baby, there's nothin' hard about love
16 Maybe someday you'll see my face among the crowd
17 I heard somebody whisper, 'Please adore me'
18 Walking on the sidewalk, hotter than a match head
19 I don't care what your daddy do
20 A wave out on the ocean could never move that way
21 Doing the best things so conservatively
22 Sympathy and trust abounding
23 Nature's taking over my one-track mind
24 The scene was rocking, all were digging the sounds
25 The sun is a-risin' most definitely
26 I can tell we know each other very well
27 I'll be over at ten, you told me time and again
28 'Scuse me while I kiss the sky
29 I know you've deceived me, now here's a surprise
30 Well meet me baby down at 45th street
31 I got a feelin' he's gonna put you down
32 She's got high-heel shoes and an alligator hat
33 I was born in a crossfire hurricane
34 The cats don't bug him cuz they know better
35 Her lovin' is the medicine that saved me
36 My independence seems to vanish in the haze
37 I'll have to put your flat feet on the ground
38 He's never near you to comfort and cheer you
39 So keep it up, quench my desire
40 Birds all sing as if they knew
41 Take the world in a love embrace
42 Man you know you're in trouble plenty
43 Every night I watch the light of the house up on the hill
44 And I fell out of bed hurting my head from things that I said
45 Whoa whoa they start spinning every Friday night
46 I don't believe you, you're not the truth
47 But it ain't happened yet, so girl, you better think twice
48 Come on everybody take a trip with me
49 As I walk through this world
50 It's easier than learning your A-B-C's
51 And he's cute in his mohair suit
52 But like a honey bee stings, you've gone and left my heart in pain
53 Trading my time for the pay I get
54 My love and me as we sing
55 Talking 'bout your troubles and you never learn
56 I'll be right here and I ain't gonna run
57 It's right that I should care about you
58 Good sense, innocence, crippling mankind
59 Lemonade pie with a brand new car
60 But he doesn't even know that I exist
61 If you don't want me, don't lead me on girl
62 Now your daddy don't mind, and your mommy don't mind
63 As we stroll by the sea together
64 I was feeling kind of seasick
65 I'd like to thank you for waiting patiently
66 I know just what to say, I answer right away
67 It's so nice to have you back where you belong
68 It's only right to think about the girl you love
69 Let's not be L-seven, come and learn to dance
70 I've been for a walk on a winter's day
71 Pulled down the shade went to the kitchen for a bite
72 Oh when we walk, it seems like paradise
73 While riding I think of us, dear
74 I told her all the things I'd been dreaming of
75 Smokin' cigarettes and watchin' Captain Kangaroo
76 I don't remember what day it was
77 Before it's earned, our money's all been spent
78 I met a little boy named Billy Joe
79 This is an invitation across the nation
80 Sometimes it hurts so badly I must cry out loud
81 My own beliefs are in my song
82 I finally passed out in her front yard
83 I was thinking 'bout a shortcut I could take
84 Now I'm not one that gets around
85 Other people stared as if we were both quite insane
86 Whatever happened to Tuesday and so slow
87 The roller-coaster ride we took is nearly at an end
88 It's the one that made you fall in love with me
89 You can make this beggar a king, a clown or a poet
90 Calling a name that's lighter than air
91 We'll make 'em turn their heads every place we go
92 Better take it easy, 'cause the place is on fire
93 She'll find the note I left hanging on her door
94 Hush my darling don't fear my darling
95 And you're forever talking on the phone
96 Ever since he touched my hand I knew
97 Take it from me, she's a better catch
98 Girl, you keep me thirsty for another cup of wine
99 Up to the moment when we said our first hello
100 Moons and Junes and ferris wheels
101 But she's the best girl I've ever had
102 Yes and I ain't saying you ain't pretty
103 And I would gladly teach you if I could only reach you
104 I hate to wake you up to say goodbye
105 I got the lips that’ll knock you out
106 Don't you ever feel sad, lean on me when times are bad
107 I'm going where the sun keeps shining
108 Tan me hide when I'm dead, Fred
109 I feel nice, like sugar and spice
110 Her name drives me insane
111 If a fella looks at you, it's for sure your little eye will be a-winkin'
112 If that guy's got into your blood, go out and get him
113 And they say we'll have some fun if it stops raining
114 I see you each morning, but you just walk past me
115 When he holds my hand I'm so proud
116 I just can't believe the loveliness of loving you
117 I lie here beside you just watching you sleep
118 I kept my cool, I ain't no fool
119 My lover stands on golden sands
120 Ain't gonna do you wrong, 'cause I don't wanna
121 There's a house party way across town
122 I tell my arms they'll hold someone new
123 I've waited so long for school to be through
124 Last night I met a new girl in the neighbourhood
125 Here's a man in evening clothes, how he got here I don't know
126 You can make the mountains ring, or make the angel's cry
127 I met him at the candy store
128 There's another before me, you'll never be mine
129 Down in Louisiana, where the alligators grow so mean
130 Well, this cat they're talkin' about, I wonder who could it be?
131 I couldn't unfasten her safety belt
132 All across the nation, such a strange vibration
133 I said that's the kind of girl I'd like to meet
134 Why was he holding her hand
135 Like the birds of a feather we stick together
136 I went east and he went west
137 Just 'bout five feet four from her head to the ground
138 Why do lies make my love stronger
139 I held my nose, I closed my eyes, I took a drink
140 Where the days are short and the nights are long
141 Make that girl love me when I put on some trash
142 You're always window shopping but never stopping to buy
143 We were out on a date in my daddy's car
144 Ain't got time to take a fast train
145 Oh, how you tried to cut me down to size
146 Nobody's right if everybody's wrong
147 Pardon the way that I stare
148 Fine little girl waits for me
149 I've got this love and I long to share it
150 Give him two arms to cling to
151 Someone, help me, help me, help me please
152 I hate to say it but I told you so, don't mind my preaching to you
153 I was just a fool too blind to see
154 You broke my heart 'cause I couldn't dance
155 It's the dance made-a for romance
156 Daddy, let your mind roll on
157 I'd like to thank the guy who wrote the song
158 The world is ours whenever we're together
159 Silver wings upon their chest
160 Since you've grown up your future is sewn up
161 How gentle is the rain that falls softly on the meadow
162 Mama hollered out the back door "y'all remember to wipe your feet"
163 Outside I'm masquerading, inside my hope is fading
164 Maybe she will notice me but then what would I say
165 Just sweet sixteen, and now you're gone
166 The eastern world it is explodin'
167 I've even seen her maybe once or twice
168 Wond'ring what in the world did I do?
169 You take Sally and I'll take Sue
170 I gave that girl a hug, in the tunnel of love
171 Wonder if you know that you're putting on a show
172 Guess it's gonna be a cold lonely summer
173 See the marketplace in old Algiers
174 Now when your girl is gone and you're broke in two
175 Lord, we don't need another meadow
176 Wish you didn't have to go, no no no no
177 The morning fog may chill the air, I don't care
178 You said things that weren't very nice
179 But it's home, the only life I've ever known
180 I wish that it would go and let me cry in vain
181 You'll come to me when you want to settle down
182 She's gonna get a ticket now sooner or later
183 You're way on top now since you left me
184 This heart could not accept and pretend
185 We're caught in a trap I can't walk out of
186 She'll love you but she'll put you down
187 The music's fine like sparkling wine go and have your fun
188 Seemed the more I gave the less I got
189 Then spring became the summer
190 You tell me mistakes are part of being young
191 Those days of soda and pretzels and beer
192 We'll do the twist, the stomp, the mashed potato too
193 Now I spend my time just making rhymes of yesterday
194 You say that you're at home when you phone me
195 We dance just as good as we walk
196 Now they never reopened that worthless pit
197 When the truth is found to be lies
198 You made me leave my happy home
199 Now the only thing a gambler needs is a suitcase and trunk
200 If she'd leave us alone, we would have a happy home
201 When you drop a coin you'll hear it sing
202 When you're close to me, I can feel your heart beat
203 He'd give up all his comfort, sleep out in the rain
204 The trees are drawing me near, I've got to find out why
205 The empty sidewalks on my block are not the same
206 Tears are fallin' and I feel the pain
207 Once upon a time there was a tavern
208 You said no strings could secure you at the station
209 Think love and wear a smile
210 You used to be my honey 'til you spent all my money
211 When I see you out and about it's just a crime
212 It wasn't me who changed but you, and now you've gone away
213 You ain't gonna need your teeth, won't need your eyes
214 Well, I've just found me a brand new box of matches
215 There must be some word today
216 Then I went far away and you found someone new
217 You shouldn't let other people get your kicks for you
218 What would I give for just a few moments
219 You gotta scream, scream, you know what I mean
220 The weather's warm but we'll play it cool
221 What was that promise that you made
222 Your're starting to criticize little things I do
223 I know that I am leaving my best friend
224 What's your name? Who's your daddy?
225 When the night has come and the land is dark
226 Love your daddy with all your might
227 Tell him I would die for him
228 There's no telling where love may appear
229 Why should our romance just keep on causing me such sorrow
230 But I wanna know for sure
