The 1984 Tigers displayed a dominance seldom seen in baseball. They were in first place from opening day until the final game of the World Series. After opening with a 35-5 mark, Detroit coasted to a 15 game win in the tough A.L. East. The domination continued into the post-season where they swept Kansas City in the ALCS, then beat San Diego four games to one to win the World Series.

Detroit was a team without superstars. The biggest change from a year earlier was the addition of Willie Hernandez to the bullpen. Acquired in an offseason trade, Hernandez went 9-3 with 32 saves and was the league's MVP and Cy Young winner. He and Aurelio Lopez bolstered an almost unbeatable bullpen. Jack Morris and Dan Petry bolstered the starting rotation.

The offense was balanced. Catcher Lance Parrish hit 33 homers, shortstop Alan Trammell batted .314, second baseman Lou Whitaker scored 90 runs, right fielder Kirk Gibson scored 92 and drove in 91, while Chet Lemon hit 20 homers and played nearly flawless center field.

After a 1984 season in which they could do no wrong, the Tigers finished third in both 1985 and 1986. Detroit returned to the top of the division in 1987, winning a dog fight with Toronto. After winning the American League East title, Detroit was upset by Minnesota in the ALCS.
