1952 Berk Ross

Joe DiMaggio
Bob Feller
Mickey Mantle
Ted Willliams

Unknown to most casual collectors, the Berk Ross sets were issued in 1951 and 1952. The front of each card contained a tinted photograph, unencumbered by graphics or other writing.  The backs included the players' name and brief statistics.  The trademark "Hit Parade of Champions" appeared at the top.

The 1952 set fascinated me for a number of reasons.  The first of those is because it is 1952 - and owning a 1952 Mickey Mantle or Willie Mays is any collector's dream.  In addition, this 72 card set is moderately priced, meaning it was realistic to complete.  The final and perhaps most compelling reason was the content.  As far as I know, this is the only set ever issued that contains both Mantle and DiMaggio as active players (even though Joltin' Joe retired after the 1951 World Series). The set includes a number of golden era stars, including Ted Williams and Stan Musial (seldom seen in the same set), Mays, Bob Feller, Jackie Robinson, etc. - 2 dozen Hall of Famers in all.
