This 1931 set contains 54 cards. The W517 designation was assigned to this set by the American Card Catalog. "W" indicates that the cards were issued in strips, which was common in the 1920s and 1930s. Unlike many strip cards of the day, this set contains actual photographs rather than drawings. The manufacturer of this set is not known.
There are two cards each of Babe Ruth and Mickey Cochrane. Other Hall of Famers featured in this set include: Lou Gehrig, Grover Cleveland Alexander, Jimmie Foxx, Mel Ott, Rogers Hornsby, Lefty Grove, and Hack Wilson. Over 30 players from this set have made their way to Cooperstown.
I have collected these for several years and this past winter (January 2002) I completed the set. These aren't as plentiful as the Goudey sets that would come along a few years later, and they are hard to find in real good condition. But they are a sharp series (at least I think so).
