GOLD AND SILVER VERSIONS

FOR VARIOUS GOLD/SLIVER INFORMATION such as breeding, phone numbers of G/S characters, swarms, and list of all Gold/Silver Pokémon, go to the information section.

GOLD AND SILVER GUIDE. The Gold and Silver Guide is a Walkthrough with pictures that is still being worked on. Some tips on the Gold and Silver here: Please note that Gold and Silver cannot be accessed in the original Pokémon Stadium but can be only accessed in Pokémon Stadium 2 and that no Pokemon from #152-251 can be brought back into the original Blue/Red/Yellow versions. Missingno can't be traded (go to the codes section for more info on what happens when Missingno tries to get traded into the Gold/Silver versions.)

TEN REASONS WHY THE GOLD / SILVER VERSIONS ARE BETTER THEN THE OTHER VERSIONS

The Gold and silver versions have so many new things!!! Here are 10 reasons why Gold and Silver are so good (and 1 reason why it isn't). We'll start at #10. The closer it is to #10, the less of the value, and the closer to #1 (which is last), the closer it is to being the best. And at the very end of top 10 reasons, you can get a head start on the calendar events of days of the week!

10) Connections with the past: This would've been something like reason #3, but sad to say this good yet terribly stupid reason is limited. What is it? Well, it is what is known as the time capsule, and can link (trade with) Gold and Silver back through time to the Blue, Red, and Yellow versions. (The time capsule is found on the second floor of every Pokémon Center.)The time capsule is deliberately closed the beginning half of the game so that powerful Pokémon from the Missingno rare candy cheat (in Red and Blue) doesn't let you cheat in Gold and Silver. Normally, you'd think this was good, right? Well, it's just that you can't trade any new Pokémon in Gold and Sliver back into Red, Blue and Yellow versions. I thought this was really stupid because I have been training really hard for years with my Blue version, and since you can't trade new Pokémon back to Red/Blue/Yellow (I have (had) my main Pokémon database in the Red/Blue) I had to start all over again in the Silver version, which is very disappointing. Missingno, 'M, or an over level 100 Pokémon can't even be traded because Gold/Silver are "smart" versions, and won't let any glitches into the new games. (Missingno is disguised as a Tyrogue and 'M is disguised as a Slowpoke.) Unfortunately, this is why it is reason 10. Read on for the better reasons why Gold / Silver (and the new Crystal version) are so good.

9) Now in color: The Red and Blue and Yellow versions were designed (built-in) for the original Gameboy. This means that when the blue version is put into the new Gameboy Color System, everything is blue, and it just doesn't seem real. The same thing for the red version, when everything is red. The yellow version kinda supported Gameboy Color's color palate, but not like Gold and Silver... which brings us to the main subject. The Gold and Silver versions are built-in and designed for Gameboy Color. This makes your Pokemon journey more realistic. But why reason #9? This reason doesn't have to be what you do... Gold and Silver are applicable for the ol' Gameboy too, if that's the way you want it.

8) Support of a little "Special Pika" action: A low reason because it is not essential to the game, but a fun one. With Gameboy Color, you can use the inferred socket found on the top to link with Pokémon Pikachu 2. What does it do? The more watts from Pokemon Pikachu you get the better items the watts can create for you.

7) Welcome to Johto!! : Gold and Silver has an entirely new land (called Johto). To make Pokémon a bit more interesting, there are all new gym leaders, all new badges, all new towns and cities and so much more. Plus the new rival is has a bit more evil in him, which is better too.

6) Even more Lands: At the end of the game after you beat Johto, you will find out you are not at the end of the game; in fact, you are in the very middle. Because when you go on the SS Aqua, will find out... you are in Kanto, the original land you played on throughout Red and Blue. The Safari Zone was closed deliberately so that Glitch City wouldn't be triggered, and Cinnabar Island deliberately got blown up so that Missingno wouldn't be triggered. It sadly seems like Nintendo has decided to cut off most of the fun codes from Red / Blue. Too bad. Well, not all too bad. Gold and Silver versions do have their own special code for cloning Pokémon. But all other codes, discontinued.

5) New Types: Over time, People were complaining that psychic Pokémon were too strong. Fear not! Because the new types darkness and steal are here to even things out! And they're just plain cool because we were starting to get tiered of the old 16 types! (If you are wondering why it is 16 and not 15, it is because Missingno's type is Bird.)

4) Red-hot Poké Love: Pokémon now have genders: Male and Fe-male. Some Pokemon like Ditto, Magnimite, Electrode, Mew (and all legendary Pokemon) have unknown genders. But anyway, you can breed with Pokémon to get baby Pokémon like Pichu and Cleffa.

3) New Pokégear and Pack: The game now has a brand-new thing called the Pokegear, which acts as a clock, map, phone directory and radio. The pack is a nifty backpack that sorts out all your items. Sometimes you can wonder how you got through Red and Blue with such a messed up clump of items.

2) 100 new Pokémon: There are 100 new Pokémon that have been added to the Gold and Silver versions (not 99. Celebi is #251). This is one of the basic features you probably know about when you first buy the game.

1) The clock: Here is the best new twist to the classic Pokémon formula: There is now a morning, a day, and a night, so you can only catch some Pokemon at one time of the day. And there are also days of the week, so certain things happen on certain days, such as the Clefairy's dance, which only happens in one place at one time on one day: Mt. Moon, night, Monday. This is really the best of the reasons.

This is #251 Celebi.

And for your gaming use, we put together a list of events for times and days:

Times of the day / Events- New to Gold / Silver is the clock. There is now a morning, day and night. There are also days of the week: Mon, Tue, Wed, Thu, Sat, Sun. And events happen, too. Here are the events:

Monday: Goldenrod Trinket shop (Morning), Clefairy Dance at Mt. Moon (night), Lullaby is played on Radio, Monica appears on Route 40, SS Aqua departs from Olivine City, Rival appears at the Indigo plateau after defeat at Mt. Moon

Tuesday: Bug Catching Contest in National Park, Elder Brother is in Goldenrod Tunnel Pokemon Salon, Pokemon March is played on the radio, Tuscany appears on route 29, Rival appears in Dragon's Den after defeat at Mt. Moon

Sunday: Younger brother is in Goldenrod Tunnel Pokemon Salon, Goldenrod Tunnel Pharmacy is open, Pokemon March is Played on the radio, Sunny appears on route 37, SS Aqua departs from Vermilion City

This is the new Pokémon Pichuä in pure gold. He is #172.

GOLD AND SILVER STRATEGY WALKTHROUGH

PLEASE NOTE: The walkthrough only includes Johto right now.

NEW BARK TOWN

This is where your Pokémon quest begins. You begin by going down stairs and talking to Mom. She says what time it is. You could tell her the time right now in real life, or you could make up your own in-game time. If you make the time set, you'll never be able change it again (unless you press Select + B + Down when Ho-oh / Lugia is flying in the beginning.) You also make your name. This is what it will look like:

The Pokegear- The Pokégear is a very important part of the game. Get it when you come downstairs for Mom. Right now, it can only tell the time, but along the way it can be used as a map, a phone directory, and a radio.

Head on over to Prof. Elm- When you go to Prof. Elm, you have a choice of 3 new Pokemon: #152 Chikorita, #155 Cyndaquil, and #158 Totodile. I recommend getting Totodile, because he is the best to get.

ROUTE 29

This is where you start running into Pokémon through grass. Here, you can catch a Sentret in the morning/day.

Catch a Hoothoot at night- Hoothoot is a nocturnal Pokémon. It and its evolved form, Noctowl, can learn many interesting psychic abilities Overall, you should wait till night to catch this Pokémon, because it is a powerful standard starter.

Find Tuscany on Tuesdays- From New Bark, go left, down, left, down, left, and then up to find the patch of grass where a strange girl named Tuscany appears, but only on Tuesdays (and only after you defeat Violet City's Gym Leader.) If you go back and find her on a Tuesday, she'll give you "Pink Bow", which when held strengthens Normal-Type attacks.

 CHERRYGROVE CITY

Ah, Cherrygrove. Not really a City, I'd say, since it only has 5 buildings. Anyway, you can look around here. But remember you have a long way to go, and this is another step to getting there.

Get your first Pokéballs! -  (Note: At first, Pokeballs are currently sold out. Do Prof. Elm's errand first.) If you've run into Sentret and Hoothoot, you couldn't catch them because you didn't have Pokeballs. Now you can, because you can go to the left building, which is a Poke Mart, and you can buy Pokeballs. Now head on back to Route 29 for a few minutes and try catching Pokemon!

Pokémon Center- The Pokémon Center. There are over 40 of these in the game. You can deposit Pokemon into PCs, Trade and Battle with friends, and most of all what you probley need right now is to heal your Pokémon. Anyhow, trading and battling is under adjustment at this point in the game. So I recommend healing your Pokémon.

Get a Map as a reward from a Tour- Talk to the old man right when you enter. He'll take you on a tour of the City. When you're done with the tour, he'll give you a Map Card for your Pokégear. Use this to see where you are in Johto or Kanto.

The mysterious Mystic Water- There will be a guy on a rocky island in the water on the right. You can't get here right now, but later in the game surf with HM02 to get to this guy and he'll give you Mystic Water, with powers up all water-type attacks.

 ROUTE 30

Another route. Here are some of its best things:

Berries- There are 2 berry flowers on this route. Keep on collecting more berries. Make a Pokémon hold them (for now), or give it to a Pokémon when weak.

Visit Mr. Pokemon- At the top-right corner of the route is Mr. Pokémon and his house. Go to it, and Prof. Oak will be in there too!! He will give you a Pokédex. Then Mr. Pokémon will give you Mystery Egg, which Prof. Elm wanted you to go out for. As soon as you leave, Prof. Elm will call you to come back... back to...

NEW BARK TOWN AGAIN

Head back to New Bark Town from here. Here are some things about it:

The first siting of your rival- When you leave Cherrygrove, a strange Pokémon trainer with one of Prof. Elm's Pokemon will battle you. He always has a type advantage against you. You'll find out more on this mysterious character as you go along.

Give the egg to Prof. Elm- Give the egg to Prof. Elm, and when you leave, one of his aids will give you the news that Pokéballs can now be bought again. Now you can buy Pokéballs at almost any Pokémart.

Money Matters with Mom begin- You can now give money to your Mom. Or you can call her to give her money. You can now save money. This is good because if you loose a battle with a trainer, your money is halved. But the money Mom is holding is not. If you give money to Mom, don't worry... you have a choice to get, take, or change. You can get the money back if you want.

ROUTE 31

This short route comes right after Mr. Pokemon's house.

Catch Bellsprouts- You can catch Pokémon like Bellsprout here. Bellsprout's early vine-whip attack makes it very useful.

Trainer Battles start- Trainers will begin to battle you around here. If you don't want to battle them, avoid eye contact. But if you do battle them and you defeat them, your Pokemon gain more experience.

Catch Pokemon at the entrance of Dark Cave- It is completely dark without flash, but walking around the few steps inside the cave won't get you lost, and you can catch Pokemon like Geodude here.

VIOLET CITY

There's a good amount of stuff to do here, and this place seems a little more like a city then Cherrygrove. You should check out these things when you get to Violet City:

The Pokémon School- You will find a man standing in-between the Poke Mart and the Gym. Answer "No" to his question, and he'll take you to the Pokémon School. Once at the school, you can find out information on Pokémon's types and conditions.

Trade a Bellsprout for an Onix- Go down to the building bottom-left of the Poké Center. There will be a guy who will trade. You can get Onix later, but it's worth it to get it now since you'll be facing the gym-leader, Falkner.

Get your first Mail (and dumb "X" items)-  At the Poké Mart, you can get flower mail for the first time. It's simple: Just buy it, make a Pokémon hold it, and write what you want to say. You can trade a Pokemon with Mail to another person to spread the message. That is basically the best of its uses.

Then there are those lousy "X" items, which are new in your journey, but nothing you really need. They're not really worth it.

Battle your 1st Gym Leader, Falkner- Your first Gym Leader awaits you. Falkner is a flying-type trainer. (See picture below.)Your best Pokemon to defeat him are rock Poémon. If you have rock throw, you can defeat him easily (train a Geodude from the dark Cave to level 11 to get that attack). Watch out for Pigeotto's gust and you'll be fine. If you win, your reward is the Zephyr Badge, and a TM, which can learn Mud-Slap.

Call from Prof. Elm- When you leave the Gym after you've defeated Falkner, you'll get a call from Prof. Elm to go to the Poké Center in Violet City. When you get there, Prof. Elm's aid (the guy who gave you news about the Poké Balls) will be there. He'll give you Mystery Egg, which when held in your party long enough, should hatch around Route 34. We'll discuss this later.

SPROUT TOWER

Sprout Tower is located at the top of Violet City. Here, you can't catch any Bellsprout, but all of the trainers have at least 1 Bellsprout in their party. So if you choose a Cyndaquil at the beginning of the game, this would be and easy advantage. But I think a well-trained Chikorita or Totodile could beat them.

Catch a Gastly at night- You'll usually find Rattata, but at night there's a 30% chance that you'll run into Gastly. Since the Haunted Tower in Lavender Town was converted into something else (we'll discuss that later), this is one of two of the only places in the game you can find a Gastly.

Ghost Pokemon like Gastly are immune to Normal and Fighting-type attacks. Gastly has a real advantage in the field: it can keep wild Pokemon from escaping with Mean Look, put them to sleep with Hypnosis, and Get rid of their health with Night Shade. Gastly can be hard to catch. No normal physical attacks can be used, so attacks like vine whip are necessary.

Get HM05 in a battle- At the top of the tower, you will find Li, the sage of sprout tower. Defeat him and get HM05, which contains Flash. In order to have strategy here, use fire or something useful as said before to beat the Bellsprouts, but to get his Level 10 Hoothoot, you'll need rock Pokémon for a better advantage. (Also note: Your rival will appear here.)

ROUTE 32

ALL of the Pokémon here (except for Rattata) are Brand-new to your quest. Run into these Pokémon in the grass. And in the Silver version, you can even find and Ekans! Don't worry Gold players-- you can get an Ekans at Goldenrod. Plus, this route is so jam-packed with stuff, you wouldn't believe it!

Catch Mareep, Hoppip, and Wooper- You can catch these brand-new Pokémon on route 32. Mareep is a sheep Pokémon. Yet it is electric. Since it is electric, you should catch it now because it'll be a long time before you catch another electric type (unless a trade). It has great special attack.

OK, now Hoppip: Hoppip is a strange Pokémon. It is Grass/Flying, yet it can't learn any flying attacks, even HM02!! Yet instead it learns the useless attack, splash. Use TMs if you want it to be a good fighter. But it's fun to catch, and hey, it adds to your Pokedex, so why not?

Wooper is a really good Pokemon to catch. It is the one of the only Water Pokemon you can catch on land, since it is Water/Ground. It is vulnerable to grass. It has bad stats until it evolves into Quagsire at level 20. It is a fish Pokemon.

(Note for all: Hoppip appears 5% in the morning, 20% in the daytime, and 0% at night. Mareep appears all the time, and Wooper appears 10% in the morning, 0% in the daytime, and 35% at night.)

Miracle Seed- If you defeat Falkner, the first guy you run into on route 32 will give you miracle seed, which powers up grass-type moves when held. This is what the guy looks like:

Get TM05- Come back later when you know cut and you can talk tot he guy up on the ledge. He will give you TM05, which is roar, but it is hardly worth it anyway. You may want to skip it.

Qwilfish Swarm / The story on Swarms- Farther down the route, you'll get to the water area. Defeat and then talk to the guy at the end of the boardwalk (his name is Ralph) and get his phone number. Here is the story on swarms: There are 6 trainers that you can register phone numbers from in the game that inform you about swarms. Ralph is one of the 6. Every once in a while, a swarm of a certain Pokemon will appear, and these trainers will call you to tell you. Without swarms, the percentage can be as low as 1%: Very dismal. But when a call pops up from one of the 6 trainers, go to where he is and you will find that the Pokemon's percentage has been raised to 95%! In this area, a rare Pokemon called Qwilfish will swarm. So register Ralph's phone Number. Then use the old rod (below) or Good or Super Rod to catch them.

Find Frieda on Fridays- Just above the Poke Center on the route, there will be a girl who only appears on Fridays. But it's worth it. She'll give you poison Barb, which when held, strengthens poison-type moves. Here's what she looks like:

Get Old Rod and Start Fishing- Talk to the fisherman in the Poke Center and he will give you an Old Rod, an accentual part of the game. Just go up next to a body of water and start fishing. If you get up to Olivine and you forgot where this place was, your only means of hope of catching water Pokemon is to either trade or to catch a Wooper.

RUINS OF ALPH

You must remember that this place is completely OPTIONAL. But if you are a puzzle-fan, you should go do this side quest. Where are the ruins of Alph? Answer: right after Violet City on 32, make a left and go through a building. You will be in Alph.

Just two rooms available (for now)- When you get here, you'll only be able to go into two rooms. One room is the big one to the left. The second one is the room at the top where you can solve a puzzle (OK. The answer is below. But the rest you have to figure out on your own.) Solve it, and you'll fall into the big room, only this time with new Pokemon called "Unown"s.

Unowns and Secrets- Unowns are strange Pokemon. They look like letters of the alphabet (it'll only be A-K for now). If you catch three different kinds and get out of the big room, a scientist will bring you back to the lab and give you a special "Unown Pokedex" which can be accessed by pressing the select button on your Pokedex. Below is a picture of what they look like.

Left: the 26 Unowns. Right: The completed Kabuto puzzle.

Now to let you in on some secrets. Later in the game at a place called Ecruteak City, you will get Surf (we'll discuss that later) and you'll be able to go on water. From here, you can go through different entrances in the Union Cave. This will be continued later, since you don't have HM03 (Surf) yet.

UNION CAVE

Now anyway, after you've gotten through all of route 32, you'll get to Union Cave.

Head south, battle trainers, catch Pokemon- This is pretty much it3/4 you'll battle 2 Hikers, 2 Fire Breathers, and one Pokemaniac. You'll run into Geodude, Onix, Rattata, and Zubat, and in Gold only, you can catch a Sandshrew. You can catch them if you want. And with you're new Old Rod that you got at the Poke Center, You can fish in the water. 80% of the time you'll find Magikarp but 20% you'll find Goldeen. Just head south. And if you want...

Union Cave's Basement- ... you can go check out Union Cave's Basement. First of all, there are 2 of them (one that you can't reach right now). The one that you can reach is at the bottom left and then to head up. Then go to the stairs. This will take you to the basement. In the basement, there will be a body of water, which leads to the hidden rooms of the Ruins of Alph, but you can't go there yet because you don't have Surf yet. The only thing you can do is pick up TM39 at the left (swift) and X Defend at the right.

ROUTE 33

There isn't much to do on this route, because it is incredibly tiny.

Another Swarm Watcher- Beat and get the phone number of the only guy on the route: Anthony. He'll call you when a swarm appears. The swarm Pokemon: Dunsparce. (It's in the Dark Cave, not the Union Cave). And the only other thing is that you'll have your first sighting of Spearow here.

AZALEA TOWN

OK, the first Town or City since Violet City. Actually, there's pretty much lot to do here, considering it's only a town.

Team Rocket attacks- This is the first time you'll face Team Rocket Gold & Silver. Actually, 3 years ago (as the story goes; 3 years ago was Blue/Red/Yellow version), Team Rocket was defeated by the hero of Red, Blue and Yellow Versions. Now they're back up to their old tricks, and you've got to stop them!

So here's the big deal-- Team Rocket has taken over much of Azalea Town, and you must head over to the top-left building of Azalea. You will find a guy named Kurt. He makes balls and such, but first we're on the Team Rocket subject. Now when you talk to Kurt, he wants to do something about the whole situation and he walks over to the Slowpoke Well at the entrance of Azalea Town. Your only application now is to follow him into the well.

Problems in the Slowpoke Well- When you came into Azalea Town, you saw the Rocket in front of the well. (See picture above.)

Now he is gone, and you can go in the well. When you get to the bottom of the well, you'll find Kurt. And when you start walking, there'll be a rocket to the left, so if you don't want to battle, stay to the right. The next rocket up on the hill you have to battle. She will have a Level 9 Rattata and a Level 11 Ekans. Up on the hill, you can also find a super potion for your healing needs.

You make your way down the hill, and you see the whole point you're here-- innocent Slowpoke's tails are being cut off. You have got to save the Slowpoke! First you have to battle a Rocket. Then you have to battle the fourth and final Rocket. He has a level 14 Koffing. If you defeat his Koffing, the Rockets will disappear, and the Slowpoke will return to Azalea. But they'll be back...

Battle Bugsy for the Hive badge- This is your second Gym Leader to defeat. He has bug types, so if you chose Cyndaquil as your starter, it'll be a good type advantage, since fire beats bug. When you battle Bugsy's Scyther, ghost types like Gastly will be best. But still, Gastly can't do ALL of the work, so you'll have to use some useful rock types, like Onix and Geodude, to get a better type advantage. When you win, you'll be awarded the Hive badge.

Your rival Strikes when you try to leave! -  Just as you're leaving Azalea Town, your rival will strike again. Make sure you heal your Pokemon, because it's going to be a tough battle.

Kurt will make balls- When you've defeated the Rockets, Kurt will give you a Lure Ball at his shop. He will also forge apricorns, which are found on trees. Bring them to him and he'll make them into balls. It takes Kurt one day to make each ball. Here is a list of the balls:

Red: Level Ball: Good against Pokemon that are lower levels then yours.

Green: Friend Ball: Pokemon caught with this start with a better mood.

White: Fast Ball: Good against Pokemon that try to run away from you.

Blue: Lure Ball: The Lure Ball is Good against Pokemon that you fish for.

Black: Heavy Ball: Good against Pokemon that are big and weigh a lot.

Pink: Love Ball: Good against Pokemon with the opposite gender of yours.

Yellow: Moon Ball: Good against Pokemon that evolve with moon stones.

All of these colored Apricorns can be found on trees just about anywhere. You should collect them. Then bring them down to Kurt in Azalea Town. He'll make them into Balls.

(Please Note: Pink, Green, and Yellow Apricorns are extremely rare. They can only be found on Route 42.)

ILEX FOREST

Here's Ilex Forest, to the left of Azalea, where it's always dark, but not always nighttime. Isn't that weird? Anyway, do the needed things for this area.

Get HM01 (Cut)- When you get to the beginning of the level, you'll see a guy who's missing his Farfetch'd. Actually, this guy is the apprentice of the charcoal guy at the bottom-right corner of Azalea Town. He's safe, but his Farfetch'd is lost. You must find it.

Actually, the Farfetch'd is very easy to find. Just after the apprentice guy, go down, right, and then up. You'll find Farfetch'd, as shown below:

But whenever you press the "A" Button in front of him, he'll always run away. Keep doing this so you loop around the trees. Make sure he doesn't go backwards. When you get back to the point where you found him, follow him right back into his master's arms! The guy will give you HM01, which allows you to CUT trees (when taught to a grass Pokemon). You can only cut the trees like the one right above where the apprentice is standing.

Get Charcoal, which Powers up Fire-Type Moves- Remember that apprentice guy who had a lost Farfetch'd? Well he's back in Azalea, and if you head back to Azalea, go into the southeast building. When you go in, the apprentice guy will give you Charcoal, which Powers up fire-type moves when held by a fire Pokemon.

Receive TM02 (Headbutt)- There's a hidden guy at the top of Ilex Forest. Even though it is not essential, you should defiantly NOT miss this opportunity. You'll be able to Headbutt small trees on the field. So here's how to get to him: From the pool of water, head right, then up, and you'll come to a fork in the road. Don't be fooled-- it IS a fork. There's a little path to the right. Go down this path and you'll end up at the "Watcher" of the Ilex Forest. Talk to him and you'll be given TM02, which is Headbutt. Headbutt small trees when taught to a Pokemon and a Pokemon may fall out of the small tree. In fact, 4 Pokemon that fall out of trees can not be found anywhere else in the game!

Catch an Oddish- This is the first time in the game where you can catch an Oddish. One attack, Moonlight, which is brand-new to the Oddish family, can restore all HP, but the result changes based on time of day. Oddish is definitely worth it -- so you should catch one.

More information on Headbutting- Headbutt is a really good attack in battle, but better in the field. When you run into a small tree like the ones surrounding the guy who gave you TM02 in Ilex Forest, a Pokemon may fall out. You will usually find bug Pokemon around where you are in the game or you could find an Exeggcute or a new Pokemon called Pineco (information shown below).

Pineco-- very destructive- Pineco, found when Headbutting trees in beginning areas, is a destructive new Pokemon. It's really enraged! Here's the catch: Pineco and its evolved forms use moves that damage enemies and also themselves! Attacks such as Take Down, Explosion, Selfdestruct, Double Edge, and those kind of moves all damage Pineco itself as well as the opponent. If you're thinking of using Pineco in battle, it won't last long when using these destructive attacks, so use some TMs, such as Hidden Power (later on). But lasting on it's own won't do to well.

ROUTE 34

Route 34 -- very important, very vital. This route has some interesting stuff. Here's a look:

TM12 for free at building Ilex Forest / Route 34- In the exit building of Ilex Forest, you'll see a woman with her Butterfree to the right. Talk to her and she'll give you TM12. This TM is Sweet Scent. This attack lowers the enemy's accuracy. In the field, use the in the grass, a cave, or a place where a Pokemon naturally shows up and a Pokemon will automatically show up.

Come back later... If you come back later when you know HM03 (Surf), you can surf along the water and go down to an extremely secret spot where 3 strange girls will approach you. This will be later.

Catch some new Pokemon- There are new Pokemon in the grass. One of them is Drowzee. Another one is Abra, who will usually Teleport away, so use Mean Look. And there will also be Ditto: It is very important to catch Dittos, because they are an important Pokemon to breed such as in the making of a Smoochum (see below for more information).

The guard battles at night- Right above the Daycare Center, there will be a guard that will attack anything-- and at night, he'll attack you! He has a tough Level 17 Growlithe, but you can earn some money from him if you win.

The Pokemon day-care Center: Breed Pokemon- Why are the letters green? Because this is a VERY important part in the game if you're going to really want to catch 'em all. Here we have a new study to Gold and Silver-- Pokemon Breeding. Just as in Red/Blue/Yellow, a Pokemon left at this building will gain one EXP point each step you take in the game. But breeding is new. Instead of just a man, there's also a woman here too, so that you can leave 2 here to breed. Pokemon have genders, if you've probley noticed already. Leave a Male and a Female of a Pokemon and you could return to find an egg. Here are the Pokemon that you'll find an egg of: If you leave a Jigglypuff (or Wigglytuff) Male and Female (picture below), they will eventually leave an egg which will hatch into an Igglybuff. If you leave a Pikachu Male and Female (picture below), they will eventually leave an egg which will hatch into a Pichu. If you leave a Clefairy (or Clefable) Male and Female, they will eventually lay an egg, which will hatch into a Cleffa. If you leave an Electabuzz Male and Female, they will eventually leave an egg, which will hatch into an Elekid. If you leave a Magmar Male and Female, they will eventually lay an egg, which will hatch into Magby. If you leave a Jynx with a Ditto, they will eventually leave an egg, which will hatch into a Smoochum. There are also 2 other baby Pokemon: Tyrogue (later on) and Togepi (which Prof. Elm gave you).

SOME NOTES ON BREEDING: Any Pokemon (like Electabuzz, Pikachu, Magmar, etc...) that are meant to breed can breed with a Ditto. Ditto are like breeding machines. Also, the pair may not get along. But this rarely happens. Also, the egg must be kept in your party in order to hatch.

Here is a picture of the day-care building.

Pokemon breeding is an interesting new topic. It's actually pretty easy. It's definitely worth a try. These pictures show how it should look.

Prof. Elm's egg should've hatched by now- Remember Prof. Elm's "Mystery Egg"? Well at about this time it should be hatching. If it hasn't, you probley deposited it in your PC too long. If you want it to hatch, keep it in your party for a while. Check the egg's stats to see how far along it is.

GOLDENROD CITY

BIG. That is the thing about this place. It is the biggest City/Town in all of Johto. There are a lot more things to do here then just about any place in the game, for that matter! Here's where to begin:

A free Bike for Sale! - The first thing you should do is to be able to move faster. Here's how to get to it: Head straight up the road and then make a right turn at the 4-junction just below the train-tracks. Head down the right path until you get to the bottom. Go into the building, and the guy at the counter will give you a free bike, and if you ride it around enough, you can keep it!

The Name Rater- (To get to this building, head to the north of the city and it's the building on the left, across from the Gym.) If you want to change your Pokemon's name, come to this guy and he'll change the name of your Pokemon. But keep this in mind: He won't change the name of traded Pokemon. No one knows why. And anyway, you can't change his policy. But any freshly caught Pokemon or Pokemon given to you can have their names changed.

The Tame Tester- Remember that route down to the Bike Shop? Well in the middle of that route, there will be one building that you can go into--this is the tame tester's building. If you go into it, there will be a woman who tests the trust in the first Pokemon in your party. Now this whole "taming" thing is new to Gold/Silver: Taming is whether your Pokemon trusts you or not. Some Pokemon even evolve on taming! Talk to here and she'll say something like "Your Pokemon's not used to you (doesn't like you)" or "Your Pokemon looks sort of happy", or "It really seems to trust you" or even if your a really good trainer, "It looks really happy! It must love you a lot." This depends on how well you train it. If you make it hold items, use it in battle often, or something like that, it will grow its trust in you.

Bill's House- Bill's house is on the path right above the Poke Center. Take that path and it's on the left. Once here, you will find that he is currently not here. He's in Ecruteak. But you should still talk to his family, so you can register Bill's phone number, so that when your Box fills up, he'll inform you. And after you meet him in Ecruteak City, he'll go back to his home, and he'll have a gift for you if you return.

Earn a Radio Card- From the first 4-path junction you run into, take the left path instead of the right (the right takes you to the Tame tester and the Bike Shop.) Make a left and go to the farthest left building. This is the Radio Tower. Go in the radio tower and ask the lady at the right. She'll give you a quiz.

Here are the answers to the quiz: YES, YES, NO, YES, NO. If you give the answers to the left, you will be awarded a Radio Card. This card goes into your PokeGear. You can listen to music on the radio using this radio card.

The Department Store- This is just a VERY big version of a Pokemart; in fact, it is tied in the biggest Pokemart in the game with Celadon City in Kanto. On the 5th floor, you can buy valuable TMs for certain Pokemon. On the second floor, buy your healing needs. There are 6 floors. Here are the lists from the 6 floors:

F-2: Potion $300 Super Potion $700 Antidote $100 Paralyze Heal $200 Awakening $250 Burn heal (and Ice heal) $250

F-2 (other man): Pokeball $200 Great Ball $600 Escape Rope $550 Repel $350 Revive $1500 Full Heal $600 Poke Doll $1000 Flower Mail $50

F-3: X-Speed $350 X-Special $350 X-Defend $550 X-Attack $500 Dire Hit $650 Guard Spec $700 X Accuracy $950

F-4: Protein $9800 Iron $9800 Carbos $9800 Calcium $9800 HP UP $9800

F-5: TM41 (Thunder Punch) $3000, TM48 (Flame Punch) $3000, TM33 (Ice Punch), TM02 (Headbutt) $2000, TM08 (Rock Smash) $1000.

F-6: Fresh water $200 Soda Pop $300 Lemonade $350.

On the 6th floor of the department store, the more expensive the drink is, the more the Pokemon likes it.

A decent trade- On floor 5, a girl will trade her Machop for your Drowzee (if you have one.) This is a good fighting Pokemon (especially early), so catch a Drowzee so you can trade.

How tame is your Pokemon?- There is a woman who will appear on the 5th floor of the Dept. Store only on Sundays. She will either give you TM27 (Return) or TM21 (Frustration). The one you want to get is TM27 (unless you usually abuse your Pokemon) because if the first Pokemon in your party is in a good mood, she'll give you TM27. If you abuse or treat your (first) Pokemon badly, she'll give you TM21. Go check the tame tester if you want to want to know how your Pokemon are doing for this "test" of skill.

Goldenrod Underground Tunnel- There are two ways to get to this tunnel in Goldenrod City-- in other words, there is an entrance and an exit (and the other way around). Either go into the building at the northwest corner of Goldenrod City or go to the building at the southwest corner just south of where the old man is walking around.

Anyway, this tunnel is more then the usual tunnel you know it the game. It has lots of trainers, many stores, and even a secret door that you will discover later in the game. But the most important thing is that the Coin Case is lying around 2 steps up and the 3 steps right from Trainer Issac. With the coin case, you can gamble at the game corner! Check it out to get even better in your training!

Pokemon Salon: It Improves happiness - Yes, that's right. At the Pokemon Salon (the central store in the tunnel), you can improve your Pokemon's happiness, tameness and liking of you as a trainer. A good beauty revival will get you Pokemon liking you in no time. But, there are a few rules. You can only do it once a day for such a good thing, a older brother works Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays and does a better job then the younger brother who comes on Sundays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. With the older brother, it costs $500, and the younger it costs $300. Don't come here on Mondays because it will be closed.

Trinkets Shop - This odd place (with odd times) at the north end of the tunnel is only open from 4 to 9 A.M. on Monday Mornings (this is why you will usually not find anyone behind the north store's counter.) The (Gold) nugget is sold here, and when you buy it here, it can be sold at other stores for even more money. But you're going to have to get up early to come to this store (if you set your clock along with real life's time.)

Bitter Medicine - Open on Saturday and Sunday, this store might not be a good idea. Caution: Your Pokemon might not like the bitter herbs and stuff sold here, even though these items heal or revive Pokemon and are cheaper then the usual versions of the items. Unlike the Pokemon Salon, the items sold here decrease your Pokemon's tameness and likeness of you. Here is the list of items sold here:

Energypowder $500 Energy Root $800 Heal Powder $450 Revival Herb $2800.

Battle Gym Leader Whitney for the Plain Badge- Whitney has her gym located in the northeastern area of Goldenrod (the big building.) Her gym is shaped like a Clefairy (from a far away view, the blocks in her gym shape a Clefairy.) Whitney has pure Normal Pokemon (and all of her trainers do, too.) If you got a Machop from the trade at the Dept. Store, then you're in luck, because Machop can beat them all (if you trained the Machop enough.) Remember: Ghosts mainly are not a good idea here. If you are having trouble with Whitney's Level 20 Miltank, a Rock Type is a good idea. If you win, you get $2000 and the plain badge.

The Game Corner- This is where you Gamble at the slot machines (and at the new card came in the machines in the right part of the room.) The place is the building north of the Pokemon Center. Now each wheel for the Slot Machines stops at a set distance after you hit the button, so those who have fast reflexes can now get triple 777's. Play 3 at once for the Slots. It gives you a chance to get diagonals. Sometimes obstacles will mess up you slots, so watch out! Slot icons:

Cherry: 6 Points, Pikachu: 8 Points, Squirtle: 10 points, Staryu: 15 Points, Pokeball: 50 Points, #7: 300 Points.

But if you get tiered of the Slot Machines, there's something new to Gold/Silver called the Card Game. At the beginning of the game, your chance of getting a hot spot is 24 to 1, but at the end, the odds are 1 to 12. Try it out. They are found at the machines in the right area of the game corner.

PRIZES: TM25, TM14, TM38 (all 3 each are5500 coins), Abra (200 coins), Ekans (Gold, 700 Coins), Sandshrew (Silver, 700 coins), Dratini (2100 Coins)

Get a squirtbottle- You need a squirtbottle to continue your journey, and you'll find out why on route 36. Go to the northeastern building in all of Goldenrod. A woman in this small house will give you a squirtbottle for no cost. But you have to defeat Whitney, first. The reason this title is in red is because you need the squirtbottle for your game or else you will not get through. Remember that, now.

Get TM50 if you run an errand- Just as you are leaving Goldenrod to the north, the guard will be there. Talk to him. He is willing for you to deliver a message to his friend back on route 31.A Spearow is carrying this message, so you will need at the most 5 Pokemon to start with. If you do the errand for the guard, you will get TM50 (which contains nightmare) from the friend, and an HP Up if you return to the guard the next time you talk. If you unblock the obstacle at route 36, this task will be much easier.

AN IMPORTANT REMINDER- MYSTERY GIFT is a new thing to do for Gold/Silver if you have a Gameboy Color. First, get to Goldenrod City, then go to the girl on the 5th floor of the Department store, and she'll give you Mystery Gift. Mystery Gift is where two Gameboy Colors get together and the infrared signal gives each one an item (this is not a trade of items.) find a friend to do this process with.

First of all, Mystery gift has many different gifts that you can get, either items or decorations for your room in New Bark Town. Items like "Mint Berry" and "X Accuracy" are common items you can get doing mystery gift (uncommon items are items like element stones.) If you get decorations, it is most likely that you will get a Pokemon doll, but you never know. You might get a rare one like a Blue Carpet, a strange plant, a giant Snorlax doll or even a Pikachu Bed! Secondly, after you are done doing mystery gift with someone, that person will end up in the Viridian City battle house. Battle him/her and win lots of money (the Pokemon in their party when they did the mystery gift with you will be their Pokemon battling you, and vice versa for your friend.) You can only battle once a day, though. If you haven't done Mystery Gift yet, a guy named Cal will appear with a level 50 Meganium, Typhlosion, and Feraligatr. Go to Pokemon Stadium 2 to even do Mystery Gift with someone, each day!

Final Words- As you leave Goldenrod, go to the building below the northeastern building of the city. Talk to the people inside and they will give you a few tips about beginning training.

ROUTE 35

This short passage just to the north of Goldenrod City has quite a bit of stuff to it. As you head on your journey, be sure to do a few things.

Another guard battles at night- This guy is almost exactly like the one on route 34: He attacks at night, he's skittish, and he has Growlithes. The only difference is that instead of having 1 level 17 Growlithe, he has 2 level 14 Growlithes.

Capture Yanma in a swarm- Yanma is a new bug Pokemon. The chances of catching it are so slim that basically you should just get called when there's a swarm. Battle and get Arnie's phone number (He's to the right through the grass from the guard.) He'll give you a call when there's a swarm.

Optional: Battle a Bird Trainer- Bird Trainer Bryan is out of the way (down the grass path south of Arnie), so you don't have to battle him if you want. Even going out of the way to get TM04 you can slip right past him. So what's the catch? Just as any battle, gain as much experience as possible. This will get you pumped up for future battles. He has a level 12 Pidgey, a level 14 Pidgeotto, and gives you $336 if you win, just in case you're wondering.

Get TM04 (Rollout)- You've seen Whitney's Miltank's furry against your Pokemon with rollout, right? Well now you can do the dame to someone else with a Pokemon that can know it. Just head to the right of the guard through the grass path, head south from Arnie down another grass path, go left and then north and you'll find TM04. It contains Rollout, an attack that keeps hitting and gaining power until it misses.

NATIONAL PARK

The national park is a vast forest area shaped like a Pokeball. The National park is made up of the Park Square, the field and the forest. Go to the Bug Catching contest and catch Pokemon here! But the best part is the secret trail that goes deep into the national park, so keep reading to find out how to get there!

Get the amazing Quick Claw- If you talk to the woman with the Persian in the Park Square, she'll give you the Quick Claw. Give this to your slowest Pokemon because this item will give a Pokemon a chance to the first attack in battle no matter what the speed is.

The Secret Trail into the forest- If you go to just north of where the man who says he printing his Pokedex is, you'll discover that there is a hole in the fence. This is actually the only way to get into the deep forest and nature of the National Park. Take this nature "trail" around the perimeter of the fence. You start to get away from civilization. Head south for a long stretch. Soon you will come to a junction. If you go to the right, you will keep going around the perimeter until you get to a dead end. But if you head south, then you head away from the perimeter and go deep into the forest of the national park. Here, there is a treasure. Once you have headed south, surrounding you on almost all sides there will be trees, and you will find TM28 (Dig). It was well worth the trip. Head back and swing to the far right of the hole in the fence and you will find Parlyz Heal. These are the secrets behind the national park.

Catch a Sunkern- This rare Pokemon is only found in Johto in the National Forest. In both versions, Sunkern has 20% for just daytime and nothing else. This is a highly recommended Pokemon, but you can evolve it into a Sunflora if you want. It's your choice. It you evolve it, you'll get Solarbeam, and if you keep it the same, you'll get Giga Drain.

The Bug-Catching Contest- You'll have a chance to compete in the Bug-Catching contest in the national park every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. The contest if free. You get 20 park balls (kind of like the Safari balls in the old game) and 1 Pokemon in which to catch as many bugs as possible. The time: about 20 minutes. The goal: catch the best Pokemon you can. You can only hold one Pokemon at a time. With some Pokemon like Scyther and Pinsir, this is the only place you can get them. Same for Caterpie in Silver and Weedle in Gold. Everyone get a berry, but 3rd place gets Gold Berry, 2nd gets Everstone and 1st prize is the Sun Stone (see picture below), an item that you can evolve your Sunkern or Gloom with.

ROUTE 36

In this route, you will find two trainers and a weird tree. The first trainer you only have to defeat if you come out of the National Park. His name is mark. He has 2 Level 13 Abras and a Level 15 Kadabra. He will give you $480 if you win. If you want to not battle Alan (the second trainer) who has a level 16 Tangela and gives you $512 if you win, stay to the bottom. Now for the weird tree:

The Weird Tree- Use your Squirtbottle. If you do not have one, go to the northeast corner of Goldenrod City and into the building. A woman will give you a squirtbottle. Anyway, use it on the weird tree blocking the path at the end of route 36. The first reaction you'd normally have would be to cut it, but it doesn't work. So use the Squirtbottle, and this weird tree will wake up! It's not a tree, it's a rare Pokemon called Sudowoodo. You have to battle it. You could just simply run away, but why do that on such a rare occasion? This is the only Sudowoodo in the game. Being the game's only pure rock Pokemon, Water, Grass, Ground and fighting types can defeat Sudowoodo the easiest. If you faint it and don't get to capture it, at least the path is cleared.

ROUTE 37

Go to the right of where the to where the Sudowoodo was, and the first man you see will be a guy who gives you TM08 for you hard work. It is a very important TM, because it contains rock smash, which can be used in the field later on. It's also a great attack. And if you head to the left of where Sudowoodo was, head up route 37 to find Apricorn Trees. These Apricorns can be brought back to Kurt in Azalea.

There's still more to route 37. Sunny (where the Apricorn trees are on the right side of route 37) who only appears on Sunday will give you a Magnet, which when held powers up electric-type attacks. Give it to Pikachu if you have one. There is also someone called Arthur back down around the guy who gave you TM08. On Thursdays, he'll show up and give you a Hard Stone, which powers up rock-type moves. Finally, just before you leave route 37, don't forget that you can catch Stantler, a new Pokemon on your journey, in the grass. In Gold, it's 20% in morning, 45% in daytime and 40% at night, and in Silver it's 15% in both morning and night and 45% in the day.

ECRUTEAK CITY

Ecruteak City is all around known for having 4 legendary Pokemon (and it does.) But there's more then just that to this old City. See what you have to do.

Bill fixes the Time Capsule- The first thing you'd normally do is go to the nearest Pokemon center, but this time there's a message from Bill. He's here to tell you that the time capsule is fixed. The time capsule is on the second floor. You can now trade back to the Red/Blue/Yellow versions. The day after you meet Bill, you can start trading with it. The only reason I do not like it is because you can't trade Pokemon #152-#251 or any new moves (attacks) back to the old versions. Bill mentions it would make the old versions "malfunction". Anyway, after he is done talking, sometime in the game you may want to go back to Bill's house in Goldenrod City to get a free Eevee.

Battle at Dance Hall and earn HM03- Go to the Dance Hall. It is the building just north of the Pokemon center. If you defeat all 5 of the dancers with the different forms of Eevee, you can get HM03! One of the guys will give it to you. HM03 contains surf, which will allow you to swim on water.

Get the Item Finder- The Item Finder will be given to you in the building just west of the Pokemon Center. This will help you find items, especially invisible ones. But you're going to have to be the one who checks.

Battle Morty to get the Fog badge- Morty, the gym leader of Ecruteak, has a Ghost gym. The floor is invisible and will transport you back to where you started, so beware! The secret is all in the fact that you must battle every trainer. Psychics are a good idea in this gym since psychics are good against ghosts. Once you defeat Ping with all Gastlys, Grace with all Haunters and the rest of the ghostly gang, get to Morty. If you defeat him you get $1600 and the Fog badge.

Burned Tower- The burned tower, located at the northwest corner of the town, is home to 3 legendary dogs. But as soon as you walk in, your rival appears and battles you. Once you defeat him, you will find your way to the north end, and there are rocks blocking the way. You don't push these rocks with HM04 strength, you smash 'em with TM08 Rock Smash! By the way, a guy gives you TM08 somewhere around the "weird tree". Anyway, break the rocks and keep going through. You'll get to a pit in the center of the room. Fall through. You will now be on the level and staircase where you can unleash the 3 legendary Pokemon (at first they are stone, but when you encounter them, the turn into flesh and run away.)

At first your wondering "hey, where did the Pokemon go?" They ran away and are now roaming the routes in Johto.

The 3 Pokemon's names are Enti, Raikou and Suicune. Enti is fire-type, Raikou electric and Suicune water. You may randomly run into them in any of the routes in Johto once you free them in the burned tower. You can never tell when or where they'll be, though. When you encounter them, they will immediately run away. Don't KO any of them, because they'll be gone forever. The damage you inflict on them stays. Randomly run into any of them and they'll appear on your Pokedex. Look at the area that the Pokemon is in. Whenever you go to where it is, it is long gone. Another random part to this is find which route the Pokemon is in even with the Pokedex added. Let them come to you.

There are invisible boundaries between the routes, cities and towns. Look on the Pokedex to figure out where those boundaries are. Then when you cross them, the beasts will go somewhere else. Use repel so that the only Pokemon that appear will be the legendary beasts. The most important part is when you try to catch one of the legendary beasts when they show up: you could do it the hard way, which is to put it to sleep, etc. Or you could do it the secret easy way, which is to duplicate a Master ball and catch all of them the easy way. For more information on cloning, go to the codes section. Anyway, once you have read the cloning section, you will know how to catch the legendary beasts in an unofficial easy way. If you tried catching them the hard way, you could be trying to catch them for hours and not have them yet.

The tin tower- A tower that lies in the outskirts of Ecruteak City. Ho-oh lives in it. Even if you get the Fog badge to pass, you will still need either the rainbow or silver wing, so come back later.

ROUTES 38, 39, and OLIVINE CITY

Go west to Olivine City through route 38. Along the way (on route 39) you will find a guy at the top of the screen who, if you exchange phone numbers with, will call you when Snubull swarms appear. You can stop by the Miltank farm if you want. One of the Miltank is sick. Feed it seven Berries, and it will get better. Then you can talk to the mother in the house, and she will give you TM 13, Snore. Plus, you'll now be able to buy milk from the father, which heals a substantial amount of HP. You don't have to complete this little side-quest if you don't want to. In Olivine City, you'll notice that the gym is empty. Climb the lighthouse (the large building, see picture below) and talk to Jasmine at the top. The Pokemon is sick, and you will need medicine to cure it. Exit the lighthouse and go to the last house just before the beach. Talk to the sailor to get the Strength HM (in the southwestern building). Get the good rod in the small building just south of the gym. In order to battle Jasmine, you have to go to Cianwood City, first.

ROUTES 40, 41 and CIANWOOD CITY

Surf over to Cianwood City (the city over the sea) but avoid all of the little caves that you see along the way (since you won't be able to do anything about them at the current time). Defeat the gym leader in Cianwood City (chuck) to get the Storm Badge (he has all fighting Pokemon so bring psychics). It will allow you to control Pokemon up to level 70. He also gives you TM 01, Dynamicpunch. Talk to the woman just outside of the gym to get the Fly HM (after beating Chuck). Go into the very last house at the bottom of Cianwood City and get a secret potion. You can get a rare Pokemon called Shuckle in the central building.

Back to Olivine City to battle Jasmine

Now, go back to Olivine City (if you have a flying Pokemon then fly) and climb the lighthouse again. Talk to Jasmine, and she will go down to the gym after healing the Pokemon. Defeat her for the Mineral Badge, which increases your Pokemon's Defense. She also gives you TM 23, Iron Tail, for the massive attack that her Steelix uses.

Tip

Now that you have surf, strength and fly, go to the slowpoke well in Azalea Town an explore it (if you want.) You can also go to Union Cave to get Lapras, and Cherrygrove City to get "Mystic Water" (since you now have surf).

MAHOGANY TOWN

Go west from Ecruteak City to Mahogany Town (through route 42). There is a man blocking the gym door, so you can't go in just yet. Go north (through route 43) and defeat/capture the Red Gyarados (as seen below) at the lake of rage.

If you head north to the lake of rage and battle the red Gyarados (see right picture above) just know that this your only chance to catch it. If you accidentally faint it, you'll never be able to catch it again. My advice: save the game RIGHT before going into battle so incase you faint it by accident, you can turn off the game and try catching it again. (Red Gyarados picture is on left.)

Once you do, look for the sign in the same area. Lance will be looking at it. Talk to him, and he'll ask for your help before running off. Go back down to Mahogany Town and enter the shop. Lance will be there, and he'll show the way into Team Rocket's HQ. Go into the HQ. Defeat the Researcher at the computer, and examine the computer to turn off a switch. If you don't, then every statue you walk past will cause two Rocket Grunts to run out and challenge you duels. On the next floor, you will meet Lance again. He will also heal your Pokemon. Defeat the two Team Rocket members behind the scientists to get passwords. (Don't worry; you don't have to write them down or anything.) Those passwords will allow you to open up the gate into the boss's room. Enter the boss's room at the top and defeat him. Talk to the bird to get the final password. Go back down to the floor that had the large machine behind a gate. Defeat the Team Rocket members with Lance's help, then go into the Generator Room. Defeat the three Electrodes on your side (the left one). Lance will then give you HM 06, Whirlpool. This HM is used to fill in whirlpools. Once outside, you will see that the man is no longer in front of the gym. You can now enter and defeat Pryce (with ice Pokemon) for the Glacier Badge and TM 16, Icy Wind. Before leaving Mahogany, check out a strange shop in the center of the town.

GOLDENROD CITY RADIO TOWER

At this point, since you will have seven badges, you will get a call from Professor Elm. There is trouble at the Radio Tower in Goldenrod City. Enter the Radio Tower and defeat all of the Team Rocket members. There will be a gate on one of the floors. Ignore it for now and continue to go up the stairs to defeat the boss at the top. You will then get a key. Exit the Radio Tower, and go just north of it to the underground passage (the place where you got the Coin Case). Unlock the door, and go in. You will then be attacked by your rival. After beating him, you will have to manipulate the switches at the top part of this room in order to open the gates. Not only this, you will have to defeat the Team Rocket members who are waiting for you. Get the card key from the guy who is trapped on one of the floors. Then enter the elevator and you'll end up in the shop. Re-enter the Radio Tower, and go through the gate that was previously locked. Defeat the remaining Rockets, and the tower is free!

ROUTE 44, ICE PATH, and BLACKTHORN CITY

Now that Team Rocket's taken care of, fly back to Mahogany Town, and go east to Blackthorn City through route 44 and a cave. (On route 44 trying catching a Lickitung.) The cave is basically one big puzzle. The ground is slick with ice, and whenever you take a step, you will continue in that direction until you hit a wall or block. The solution: on the big ice field, go to the top-right corner, go down, left, up, left, down, right, down, right, up, and right to get across.

The goal will be to get to the top and push the blocks through the floor. Then drop to that floor as well. The blocks will help you get to the ladder in the middle. Also, HM 07, Waterfall, is in this cave (in an Item Ball), and you need it! It is just right of the big ice field.

In Blackthorn City, defeat Clair at the Gym (the dragon gym leader). See the picture below for a way to get through Blackthorn gym After defeating her she won't give you your badge yet. Surf on the area behind the gym and through the cave. Find the Item Ball with the feather in it, and Clair will show up. She will then give you your Rising Badge. It allows you to control all Pokemon. She also hands you TM 24, Dragonbreath. While your in Blackthorn City, go to the bottom-left building to forget unwanted HMs.

FINAL PART OF JOHTO

Leave Blackthorn to the west, and go through mount Mortar. Using waterfall, you can skip the rest of the dungeon. After exiting the cave, Elm will give you a call, telling you he has a Masterball. Before going to New Bark Town to pick it up, you must go through route 45 and 46. When you get to New Bark Town, he will give you the infamous Master Ball. But what ever you do, DON'T USE IT! Clone it so you can have multiple Master balls (see the codes section). Now that you have all eight badges, you can go to the Pokemon League. Surf to the right, and a man will give you a new Map Card (to see the second map). However, you may need some firepower. You should start your quest for one of the two new legendary birds. If you are playing Gold, you can get Ho-Oh first; if Silver, you can get Lugia. Whichever one it is, it will be at level 40.

Ho-oh and Lugia

Ho-Oh is in the Legendary Temple. Go back to Ecruteak City and into the double-space house that has a door on it. Follow it around until you get to a temple. Ascend to the top, and Ho-Oh will be there. (See picture below and on left). Lugia, on the other hand, is in the set of caves to the east of Cianwood City (the network of caves will remind you of Seafoam Islands). Enter through the northeast entrance and go into the middle-right cave. You will be nearing Lugia's area if you go down a waterfall. Enter the cave, and Lugia will be there. (See picture below and on right.)

THE POKEMON LEAUGE

Once you have received the second map from the man, go into the cave and walk all of the way through. Prepare for a long walk up to the League (through Victory road). Go through the very last cave (it's not very long), and your rival will confront you for the last time. Defeat him and enter the league (the Indigo Plateau). Defeat the Elite Four - Will (Psychic), Koga (Poison), Bruno (Fighting) and Karen (Dark) - and finally the current champion, Lance (Dragon).

Once you have beaten these 5 trainers, you are ready to start the second part of the game-- Kanto, where the red and blue versions take place.

TO BE CONTINUED; FINISHED SOON. WE ARE STILL WORKING ON THE GUIDE. BE DONE SOON!
