Ashley to Appear at "USA Tennis Rock & Rally"
Although just 16 years old Ashley has made a splash on the Tennis world in the year 2001. That wouldn't be all that unusual five years ago when Martina Hingis and Anna Kournikova were making their debuts. However under the current rules it is much harder to turn professional at 15 or 16 years old. (Jennifer Capriati was 14.) Tournaments are limited and getting into the Grand Slams is even more difficult.
Ashley first received attention at the 2001 Ericsson Open, her first professional tournament. Later in the year while competing in the junior portion of the French Open she began to receive more attention. In June she was seeded as the #1 Junior on the fabled grass of Wimbledon. It was at Wimbledon that she really started to garner the attention on a broader level including a second web page dedicated to her tennis prowess going up on the web. (The webmaster for the page you are now viewing first saw Ashley in Dothan, Alabama and was looking for a topic for a web page that would draw some attention. As a tennis fan and recognizing the young talent's skill, Ashley Harkleroad was chosen as the topic and the first ever fan web page debuted in May of 2001.)
The U.S. Open lowered the flood gates. She wore an outfit that drove the young boys wild and the critics nuts. She handled it all in stride with plenty of poise and hasn't seemed to let the critics get to her. Some of the critics call her "Kourna-copy" or "American Anna" but Ashley is proving to be her own person.
