Full Service Travel Sites

Better fares may be available from the Travel Metasearch Engines below.

One of the best sites for one stop travel information is Travelocity.  This site has flights, car rentals, hotels, vacation packages, Frommer's Travel Guide, maps, weather, a currency converter, and a ski resort guide.  Flight information includes flight times and prices.  If you register (no fee), they will keep your travel profile and a record of all of your travel plans.  Fare Watcher will keep track of airline ticket prices for your choice of destinations and display them on the top page.   Now that SABRE owns controlling stock in Travelocity, we are expecting better things.  Consumer Reports recently found their best airfares on Travelocity.

Another mongo site is Microsoft's Expedia.  They have a Quick Search for flights, hotels, and rental cars on the top page.  They also have maps (kind of small), travel guides (by Fodors), a hotel directory, and a currency converter.  The site is faster than it used to be, which is a nice improvement.  They still don't have as many hotels listed as many other sites.

Travel Now has a short list of hotels, but a lot of information about those listed.  They also have airline and rental car reservations along with cruise and vacation information.

Cheap Tickets has plane, tickets, rental cars, hotels, vacation packages, condo rentals, and last minute deals.  While their hotel search seems to only work with cities that have airports, they do guarantee the lowest price.

Kayak is a new service that very light on the graphics and extras.  It does show you the flight times and prices up front.  They search through most of the major airlines (except southwest).  You can then choose what flight/hotel/rental car you would like.  The hotel results are good.  They have some basic information and can map the hotel on MapQuest, but they don't have any pictures or area information.  You can change the radius of your search, which is often very useful.  For flights, you can check nearby airports to see if there are better fares.  They will connect flights on multiple airlines to get you there.  They also combine different departure and return airports, which can be a logistical nightmare.

Yet another place to try is Kasbah.com.  This site also has a lot of additional travel information including guides and travel information.

Hotwire.com says they will give you the lowest price on hotels, airfare, and rental cars.  However, you cannot see what you are getting until after you pay for it.  For example, if you want a hotel, you have to choose a metropolitan area where you will get, most likely, one choice.  They will tell you a few things about the hotel, such as whether it has a kitchette or workout facilities.  But it doesn't tell you where the hotel is, what the bed arrangments are, how many can sleep in the room, or whether it is non-smoking.  All purchases are final.  If your plans are pretty much set, you should be OK.  But if you end up leaving early, you will still pay for the entire time.  The rental cars and airfare deals are a little less scary, because you should have a good idea about what you are getting.  Hotwire does give a complete price with taxes and any charges.

 METASEARCH

Sidestep searches several travel sites to come up with listings.  The listings did not seem too extensive.  For example, in Fairbanks, Sidestep came up with 7 hotels and Expedia produced 21.  They do have a good deal of information about each hotel, including pictures and a location map.  You will be sent to another site to book the flight/hotel/rental car.  They even have a toolbar that will compare their results to Expedia and Travelocity.  Flight results included nearby airports.  A quick, drop-down list lets you check flights a few days before and after your original date.

Sidestep did not check Southwest, however.
