The town of Todos Santos Cuchumatanes is located in Guatemala's Western Highlands, not far from the Mexican border. Like about 60% of the Guatemala's inhabitants, almost all the residents of Todos Santos trace their ancestry back to the original Mayan inhabitants of the region.

Returning from Todos Santos, I stopped in Huehuetenango, a town of about 75,000 also located in Guatemala's Western Highlands. In contrast to that of Todos Santos, most of Huehuetenango's population are ladino descendants of Spanish conquistadores .
