• datefix.zip (16 KB) - RTC/BIOS Year 2000 Fix Free (Public Domain) programs to test and fix common RTC/BIOS Year 2000 Problems. For DOS 5, DOS 6, Win95 and Win98. Most PCs more than 2 or 3 years old have minor problems in the BIOS regarding the RTC (Real Time Clock). Most newer PCs either have no BIOS problems, or the problems are insignificant. This package includes a discussion of RTC/BIOS problems, procedure to test your PC and a program to fix the most common problems. (1999-08-18 update to documentation and fix program to handle AWARD 4.50G BIOS bug)
• datefixs.zip (66 KB) - RTC/BIOS Year 2000 Fix Same as datefix.zip, but also includes full program source code.
• dosutil.zip (14 KB) - DOS Utilities This is a collection of DOS utilties that I've written over the years. They also work under Win95/98. They include features to get user input for menu selection, or parameters for other programs; work with environment variables, including a substring feature; send any characters to the screen, printer, other programs, or files; wait for keyboard input or a timeout; and a joystick test program.
• e2m.zip (101 KB) - Eudora/Netscape to/from Microsoft Internet Mail or Outlook Express mail file conversion for Win95/98. Internet Mail (IE3) build 1162 (and above) and Outlook Express (IE4/IE5) have built-in support for importing Netscape and Eudora files. The Microsoft import generally does a better job, making the E2M program largely obsolete. However, there are a few special cases where this utility is still useful. Internet Mail cannot import Netscape version 4 files (only 2 and 3). Internet Mail for Win95 cannot import the Win3.1 version mail files. (Outlook Express handles all of these.) The E2M utility can overcome this limitation of Internet Mail import. This utiltiy can also be used to reload Saved Messages (*.EML files) back to the mail folders. (The author of this program never provided any instructions or support. His web site no longer exists. I've included some instructions based on my experience with the program.). Also added an EML2MBX.BAT file to aid in converting from these two Microsoft mail programs to Netscape or Eudora format. See also outdump.zip below. (Updated Notes 1999-12-20)
• fentun.zip (116 KB) - Fentun TNEF Attachment Extractor Since the author's web site is sometimes (often ?) unavailable, I've put together this set of files. For additional information, see the MS-TNEF section of my Decoding Internet Attachments - A Tutorial
• kegstips.zip (274 KB) - KEGS Win95/98 Tips These tips files were collected by Steve Fondren. Selected tips from these files were presented by him at the November and December 1999 meetings of the Win95/98 Special Interest Group of KEGS.
• lstnef.zip (158 KB) - LS-TNEF Java based TNEF Decoder This was previously available from Scopeware, but is now missing from their website.
• newsg.zip (3 KB) - Netscape News RCG to Searchable Text File for Versions 1-3. I wrote this program because Netscape versions 1-3 lack any means to search the list of newsgroups. The program converts the *.RCG file to readable plain text file. You can then use your word processor to search the file. This is not compatbile with version 4 which uses a differently formatted *.DAT rather than *.RCG file. However, version 4 has a built-in search feature, so this program isn't needed there. (Program updated 1998-05-20)
• oe_spell_works7.zip (262 KB) - Outlook Express Spell Checker for users of MS Works version 7 on Windows 2000 or XP only. This patch provides the missing files and registry update to enable the spell checker in Outlook Express for users of Works version 7. NOT for use if other versions of Works are installed or MS Word or other Office products are installed, or on other versions of Windows.
• outdump.zip (27 KB) - *.MBX to *.EML Conversion Converts IE3 Internet Mail and IE4 Outlook Express *.MBX files into individual *.EML files. (No longer available at the author's web site.) Also includes EML2TXT.BAT to convert *.EML files to a single text file. See also e2m.zip above. (Updated Notes 1999-12-20)
• slice.zip (3 KB) - Slice Large Files to Multiple Diskettes. It also automatically places the splice program on the 1st floppy for later restore. You don't need to worry about finding the restore program when you need it, particularly if it might be a different machine. Compatible with DOS and Win95/98. (A PC Mag Utility. This is an older utility and no longer available on their web site. PC Mag now has a newer, larger SLICE32 version with a graphical user interface for Win95/98/NT4.)
• trmptel.zip (30 KB) - Trumpet Telnet for Win3.1 and above. This is provided for Win3.1 users who need a simple Telnet program in order to look at their POP3 Mail Server. (Although this is available at some FTP sites, they are often too busy to get in.)
• unzip.exe (49 KB) - Unzip Program A ready-to-run freeware (by Info-ZIP) program for unzipping *.ZIP files. This is a DOS program that will run from a DOS prompt under Windows. To install, click on the link to download the file. If your browser doesn't automatically give you a Save As option, try Right click (or hold down the Shift key and click - depends on your browser) and select the Save .. As option. For ease of use, save to a directory in your Path. If you don't have a directory setup for utilities, or don't know one, your Windows directory (e.g. C:\Windows) would be a reasonable choice. Below are some sample commands. (Note: Option flags are case sensitive. The -d and -v options must be lower case.)
  • unzip - gives a list of command line options
  • unzip filename.zip - unzips filename.zip into the current directory. Not a good idea unless the current directory is empty or just contains the zip file. Unzipping into a directory that already contains files just gets confusing.
  • unzip filename.zip -d c:\unzip - unzips filename.zip into the c:\unzip directory. The directory will be created if it doesn't already exist.
  • unzip -v filename.zip - Views the list of files contained in filename.zip
