While
cutting and welding of my '66 Mk2 floor, trunk and rocker-panels (sills),
I've decided to work on rebuilding the Zenith-Stromberg carbs and work on
getting this 70 GT6 looking and driving reasonably well. It will still
need to be stripped and painted, but I don't want all three projects lying
in pieces in my garage.
The previous owner mounted nice wide tires on mag wheels. Unfortunately, they rubbed the rear wheel arches of the fenders on just the slightest banked turn. I was going to buy new tires, but thought I'd try something else first:
I removed the wheels and visualized where the tires where rubbing. I used a pair of pliers to initially bend the inner flange of the fender wheel well up.
Then using a small sledge hammer, I began banging away at the flange to bend it up and out.
After about 10 minutes of pounding, the flanges were narrower and out of the way of the tires.
I coated them with white liquid shoe polish, reinstalled the wheels and went for a test drive. SUCCESS! No more rubbing.
As you can see, there was no paint chipping or deformation of the outer surface of the fender.
