"Saturday Night Live's" Norm Macdonald has been lifted as anchor of the popular "Weekend Update" segment and replaced by "SNL" mate Colin Quinn. Macdonald, who has anchored the segments for four years, will remain with "SNL" as a regular cast member.
The outgoing fake anchor last night said the move resulted from a decision by NBC West Coast President Don Ohlmeyer. During an appearance on CBS' "Late Show With David Letterman," Macdonald said he spoke recently with Ohlmeyer, who he said fired him.
"Other than 'Weekend Update', I also do sketches but I stink in those," Macdonald said. "He thinks I'm funny in those. He doesn't think I'm funny in 'Weekend Update.' God only knows, it's just a matter of opinion. He also thinks O.J. is innocent." No doubt, Macdonald will have a few more choice words on the subject this morning when he appears on Howard Stern's radio show.
Quinn will take over the faux news report on this weekend's telecast (hosted by Samuel L. Jackson, with musical guest Ben Folds Five). Quinn joined the show in 1995 as a featured player and writer. This season he became a full-fledged cast member.
Speaking of Macdonald, he's just been named host of ESPN's sixth annual ESPY Awards set for Feb. 9 at Radio City Music Hall. This year''s ESPYs are being produced by Broadway Video, which is owned by "SNL" executive producer Lorne Michaels.
