RISES FROM THE DEAD TO GET BIG PAYDAY
By KEITH J. KELLY
An Irish wake has led to a big payday for Saturday Night Live
star
Colin Quinn.
Quinn, who took over from popular Norm MacDonald as the Weekend
Update anchor person on the NBC comedy, just signed with an
imprint
of Random House Inc. to pen a humorous memoir.
"I've been a fan of his for a long time - then I went to see
his one-man
play on Broadway, 'An Irish Wake,' said Leslie Schnur, editor in
chief of
Delacorte Press and Dell Publishing at Random House Inc.
"It made me laugh and cry," said Schnur. "The show
proved he's a
natural storyteller and the themes he's interested in, family,
religion, culture,
are on everybody's minds these days," he said.
"He's a great comedic observer and certainly Ireland has
been very
popular in the book world the last couple of years," said
Dan Strone,
the agent at William Morris & Co., who handled the deal.
Industry sources estimate Quinn has landed an advance of about
$300,000.
Delacorte Press imprint will handle the hardcover while sister
imprint,
Dell Publishing will handle the paperback version. It's
tentatively scheduled
for the fall of 1999, said Schnur.
"He shoots straight for the heart. He starts from his own
Irish-American
background in Brooklyn, but he branches out into more universal
themes."
