To: HSUS and ASPCA,

We, as benefactors and members of your animal advocacy organizations, would like to call this incident to your attention and ask that you use your noteriety and influence to join us in this quest for justice.

On March 7, 1997, 3 young men broke into the no kill, not for profit shelter for cats, NOAH'S ARK , in Fairfield, Iowa. Reports indicate that 15 cats were bludgeoned and/or stabbed to death, many more were injured, some escaping and returning later to the shelter. Local veterinarians volunteered their services to treat the injured cats.

We are seriously alarmed by this and other incidents of animal abuse, this being the worst case we have heard of to date! The fact that this was a place of refuge for abused and homeless cats, makes it even more despicable.
Some of these cats were re-learning love and trust, and the volunteers at Noah's Ark were working tirelessly to find responsible, caring homes for these poor creatures. The volunteers involved in Noah's Ark, sacrificed their time and monies to care for and find new homes for these cats - they knew, loved and cared for them. Can you imagine their grief? These poor cats were 'sitting ducks' for the sub-human monsters that perpetrated this atrocity!

Even more alarming, is the lack of media coverage on this incident! We realize that sometimes media coverage stimulates 'copy-cats', but perhaps attention by the media would promote awareness and involvement by greater numbers of the population.
The media is quick to get involved in rescues of dogs that are facing the death sentence for biting or attacking chickens, people, etc., How can something of THIS magnitude go unnoticed?

We feel public awareness of this tragic event is essential. Your connections can help to publicize these crimes. Some good must come of this horrible crime, please don't let the murders of these gentle creatures be all for naught!!

Educational programs for gentle and ethical treatment of animals must be intensified. To call NO attention to this tragedy makes it seem meaningless and insignificant to all those who dedicate their lives to helping animals. All of us who really care, but do not have the time to volunteer their services, and can only make donations, are hurt as well.

We implore your organizations to become involved in this and other incidents of animal abuse!
