On February 28, 1998, Vinnie's torture ended. The landlord was walking around the house, when he saw a black garbage bag in a crawlspace underneath the house. Thinking it was just trash left behind by Klasinsky, he went to pick it up and was shocked & frightened when he saw the bag move! He called the police, then went back to open the bag and discovered poor Vinnie! Vinnie had been starved for months and then just thrown into a trash bag like so much garbage and left to die!! Vinnie was rushed to a veterinarian by the police and treated for low blood pressure, severe malnutrition & dehydration. At first he was unresponsive, his condition was extremely critical and he was not expected to survive, but after 3 hours started to respond to treatment. After being stabilized, he was moved to the Animal Medical Center in Kansas and by March 10, was already up to 25 pounds. Scott M. Klasinski was arrested on charges of animal cruelty, which is only a misdemeanor, with one year of jail maximum penalty for each charge. He has already posted bond of $2000 and is free, awaiting his first court appearance on March 19, 1998. The District Attorney has the option of trying the case in District Court rather than Municipal Court, when it is warranted and felt that this case certainly deserved to be in District Court.

I have read reports of the starvation, torture and attempted murder of the little pet dog, Vinnie. I am shocked, appalled and outraged by this vicious, and senseless crime.
The pet dog, Vinnie, who was tortured, starved, tossed into a trashbag and left to die by the alleged perpetrator, Scott M. Klasinsky, was a trusting, warm-blooded living being, capable of pain and fear.
The taking of any life, or the attempt to do so, is repugnant to me. Left unpunished, or not sufficiently punished, this person may very likely go on to commit other violent crimes, including the murder of people.
I wish to express to you my hopes that every effort will be made by your office to prosecute and convict this man accused of this atrocious crime, using every resource available to your office.
Please make every effort, upon his conviction, to sentence him to the maximum penalty allowed by law. It is my belief that imposing the maximum sentence will serve as a deterrent to the repetition of crimes of this nature.
