Federal Issues

The MJC’s mission is to address public policy concerns for the Michigan Jewish community at the state level. There are however, several federal issues that have a significant impact on the Jewish community. Some of the issues also have both state and federal implications. For example, a large percentage of Michigan’s Medicaid funding comes from federal sources. The MJC will maintain its stated positions on issues whether the issues are on the state or federal levels.

The following are some issues on the federal level that are specifically of concern to the Jewish communities in our State.

Federal Medical Assistance Percentage (FMAP): While Medicaid is administered by the State, the federal government matches State Medicaid dollars. Increasing the FMAP would provide additional assistance to the State and increase its ability to continue Medicaid services.

Naturalization: The Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) continues to face chronic delays in naturalizing those who have applied for citizenship. The MJC supports efforts to expedite the process of granting citizenship.

Naturally Occurring Retirement Communities (NORCs): NORCs are communities where residents have "aged in place" over a period of several decades. NORCs include apartment buildings, suburban neighborhoods, or planned communities. Providing community-based services including medical care, social services, home renovation, and caregiver support would allow older people to remain independent and in their homes as long as possible.

Refugee Assistance: Since the events of September 11th, many people seeking refugee status have faced long waits in the country from which they wish to flee. Some had already obtained refugee status but have been unable to enter the United States. The MJC supports efforts to reopen the doors to refugees and allow them to escape dire situations in their country of origin.
