Summer 1969. The Mother of All Color Wars.
by Andy Strauss

Some of my best memories from camp had to do with Color War. For me I loved the sports, both playing and coaching. I never really cared too much for the sing night except for some of the costumes which were outrageous. Probably the best part of that night for me was not who won, but the unveiling of the plaques. I wish we could have offered these nice works of art to all who wanted them. I actually have in my possession the 1977 Green Viking Man with a cut off sword. By the way who has the damn Dorse!

Anyway what I really wanted to write about was the 1969 Color War. This was arguably the best of them all.

The Green Army vs White Navy. General Norman Kent vs. Admiral Neal Glassman. Furious competition. Things got so nuts two waiters actually hid the silverware one morning. Mitch Strauss stopped competition until culprits were identified. (I won't name names).

Green Army led by 60 points going into sing. Olympic block scoring didn't exist. (Never understood how that work). Each event had point value and you got what you earned. White won sing by 64 points overall and took the title.

By the way, even the breakout was great. A small craft plane flew overhead dropping "Hang it up Arnie" (JUST KIDDING), "Keep your bunks clean". The plane then flew out of sight for a few minutes. Then the real stuff was dropped. This happened in the middle of free play.
