Comments: WOW, what a memorial day weekend at Rocking Horse Ranch. I went for my 5th memorial day with friends and family, and it's like being in camp. Horsebackriding, waterskiing, softball, swimming--all day long. I only wish they would have let me drive the boat and not just throw the rope. My 10 year son cut the wake, and my 7 year old daughter got up also. The water was way too cold for me, just like it was it Big Lake(??) the first week in july. Anyway, how come I never see any posts from my crew, 70'-82,83? I'll try to keep abreast. Gotta go examine some teeth now--ciao!!

Comments: Hi Everyone, Hope you had a nice Memorial Day Weekend. It was very wet in Maryland. I was channel surfing and found this show titled "Bug Juice". It's on Disney Channel, Sundays at 7:30pm. The description reads: It's a true life adventure as real kids attend a real sleepaway summer camp. The scene is Camp Highlander in the pine uplands of North Carolina. Just move it to Connecticut and it's Real World meets Camp Kendale. Check it out. I got a kick out of it. Robin

Comments: Hey, "Kitchen Shit" go clean some pots. And Tony, lets get something straight. I NEVER fired anyone for smoking Pot. I do remember when I walked in on you guys smoking in the BUNK! What freaking maniacs you were. As I'm writing this I'm listening to an Awesome concert over the web. What a country! Barry Kantrowitz and I spoke the other day about a Reunion and it is still in the works. It looks like it will have to be in september though. We will keep everyone informed of our progress...

Actually, my sister Cathy (kendale 63-69),is here and is loving this site. Aren't there any other "old" folk out there...where's richie snyder? Richie Gerwitz is in California. Marc Schwartz is in Florida. Leni Barsky is in NYC.....I would be great to get together. Camp Kendale was the greatest!

Comments: I am with Charlie "kitchen shit" Malament & Paul "sorry I have to fire you for smoking pot" Karp. A reunion in N.Y. would work. If it happens there I will be there, no doubt about it. I'm willing to help Paul or whom ever decides to organize a reunion in NY. I will do what I can and i'm also willing to kick in some money. I know there are a lot of us late '70's to '85 people out there, so lets here from you.

Comments: Hi All, I am also sorry that the Kendale site reunion didn't work out this year, but maybe next year it can happen. Also, Evan Kutner was kind enough to put some of the pictures I took at our October meeting on photo shop for me under his name since I was unable to make the transfer. He never did get to put the unique ones up yet, but take a look if interested. To Leslie Ladman: If you look at Photo Gallery, Photo Series submitted by Robin Pomerantz, 1968 Girls Bunk, you will see a picture of yourself as counselor of this gangly group of girls. If you actually remember me, I would just like to say that I have changed considerably in every way imaginable since my first year at camp. Hope all is well with everyone. Robin.

Comments: I went to Kendale from 57-68. I read sue rosner's message about the od shack. i think the od shack was near the baseball field. Near where we lined up for the flad in the morning. Wasn't it where announcements were made? How about the big bench swing on main campus? Remember that? Are there any other people out there who are registered from our era? I know Sue Benkowitz has been on, too.

Comments: Well fellow Kendaler's I am truly disappointed that the camp "Camp Grounds" reunion did not work out and truly sad that our response was so weak. I realize that we all have our lives and things to do. Just remember to call an old camp friend from time to time to remember the good ole days and to keep a old friendship a lasting one. I'm sure it will make you feel good to do so. Stay well everyone and lets see if something more local can attract everyones attention at a later date. Love, vickie

Comments: New York City!!! Numerous people have mentioned this as the place that would be the easiest to get to and allow for the largest possible turnout. I know that a New York reunion has been done in the past, however, now that we have the web site and better internet capabilities- reaching everyone has never been easier. The camp site reunion was a great idea, but is simply not possible for most. Having a large gathering will also provide the perfect venue for those who wish to promote and make an "on site" reunion a reality. Paul Karp has volunteered to dust off his old "Head OD" clip board (erase the sketches of the CIT's in short shorts) and put it to good use...finally. And everyone was wondering how this Color War General led the White Alaskans to the greatest last day comeback in Color War history! Charlie Malament aka: "Kitchen Shit" 1978, "Michael Jackson" 1979, "Roxanne Rabinowitz" Miss Kendale 1980, 1981 Mountain Park Vomit Pool winner !!!!! Comments: I'm sorry we couldn't pull off the reunion at the camp. I thought of possibly having a picnic/BBQ at a park in Westchester County or Long Island. We might be able to do this late September if you let me know soon. I would have to get a permit which would cost about $250.00. What do you all think?

Comments: ** SOUTH WINDHAM REUNION UPDATE** Good News!! The camp director will allow us to host a ONE DAY reunion on the campgrounds on SATURDAY, MAY 20TH! The cost will be $ 65.00 per adult or child. The only caveat is that we need to let her know by APRIL 12TH!! Please let me know ASAP if you will be able to attend. If we get the 60 minimum, I will post information about where to send a check. I hope this allows more of you to make it and look forward to seeing all of you! The overnight idea has been scrapped, although some of you may choose to stay over in town (I plan to do so). Jeff Rosner has been kind enough to find out some hotel information. There is a Best Western in Willimantic with reasonable rates ($ 77/dbl; $ 88/king). Again, get back to me ASAP!

Comments: Ok everyone… here's the deal with the South Windham reunion. It's not dead yet, but time is running out!! So far, with one day to go before the deadline, I have only 10 checks and about 6 more verbal confirmations.(I imagine we can push the deadline a week or so, but certainly not much more than that!) This is well short of the 60 minimum the director needs to let us do the reunion up there. The one day option is only valid if we give her the 60 minimum overnights. I've asked her about "renting" the camp for a day, but so far she is cool to the idea. Mitch Strauss is going to try to persuade her. So, unless I get a flurry of yes's within the next few days, we're going to abandon the May 19-21 idea and try for a one day deal in the fall. Please let me know by email if you would be interested in a one day reunion up at camp in the fall. There are several hotels in the area and those who wanted to stay overnight could make arrangements to do so! If we get enough people for this and if the director is willing, we might be able to rent the camp for a Saturday and part of Sunday for those who stay over. Please, let me know ASAP if you were planning to make the May reunion so we can either "beg" the director to extend the deadline on this one, or if you would be able the make a Sept/Oct reunion. THANKS!!

Comments: Hi to all my friends from 1980-1985. I'm sorry the reunion is not working out at Kendale. To be honest I would not have been able to make it. I am coming in to NY on business from March 29th. to April 2nd. If any of my Kendale friends would like to get together please let me know. I will probably stay at The Plaza so Central Park would be a good place to meet. I hope all is well with everyone things are great with me. Hope to hear from some old friends

Comments: Not sure how many of you remember My Co-Counselor From 1979, Lee Abraham. Lee is now a Music Journalist and writes for various Publications including an on-line magazine called Jambands.com. Lee is a great guy who I had not been in touch with for about 20 years, but those Camp Kendale bonds are strong. He wrote an article in the on-line magazine which is mostly about a recent experience we have in common. Namely, taking guitar lessons from Jorma Kaukonen. The article does talk about Camp Kendale a bit and I thought anyone who remembers Lee might get a kick out of reading it. The URL for the article is http://jambands.com/mar00/columnists/abraham.html

Comments: Greetings all! Despite the low response so far, the idea of a reunion at the Kendale campgrounds is not dead! We're actually up to almost 20 and with the possibility of a one day option, we're hoping that more of you can make the trip! We're still shooting for the May 20-21 timeframe. I've emailed the director regarding the day-trip idea and hope to hear back shortly. In the meantime, what do you all say? Can you make a one day trip to South Windham for some fun, nostalgia and comraderie? Again, this does not have to be instead of a local reunion! South Windham is only a 3 hour drive from the city and even less for Westchester people! A local reunion would be great, and I would definitely attend, but as many have expressed on this site, it still wouldn't have the same emotional impact as a reunion up at camp! Let's see if we can get the 60 people we need!! Please feel free to email me or call if you have any questions. Alpine82@optonline.net (516) 932-1090 work # .

Comments: It's too bad the turnout for the CT reunion looks low. I'm still willing to work on a NY reunion in June. June 11 is a good day for a small group I have already contacted. Rockland County NY and Bergen County NJ are both very convenient for a large number of alumni-- people from the 1977-1983 years. So what do you think?? With kids or without?? Afternoon or evening? Maybe Brunch? Indoors to prevent weather issues is my suggestion. No sleeping out, no long trips, no camp food, just a few hours with old friends. If it works, maybe we can get more adventurous next year. Let me know-- Let Paul Karp PJKESQ@AOL.COM know also-- he's going to help!!Best Wishes to all- Barry

Comments: Well, unfortunately it looks like we may not pull this reunion in S. Windham off unless we get a flurry of people to sign up by March 31st! Here"s the list so far: Ronny Zucker, Jeff Lowinger, Mitch Lemus, Mitch Strauss, Andy Strauss, Robin Pomerantz, Vickie Littman, Roger & Linda Slade, Norm Kent, Evan Kutner, Sheryl Rubeloff, Marc Arkind...well short of the 60 minimum we need. While it would be great, I recognize that many people simply can't get away for an entire weekend (and the cost is a bit high if an entire family goes). Mitch Strauss emailed me and had a terrific idea. He suggested that we rent the campgrounds for 2 days, no meals and no lodging. People would then be able to come up for a day or 2, whatever they want and make their own arrangements for staying over (at a motel in town) if they wanted to. This option, if the camp director would go along with it, would enable more people to come and keep the cost down. So, my question is this: If we can make arrangements to rent the campgrounds (no meals, no lodging) at a cost of somewhere between $ 20 - $ 30pp, how many of you could and would attend? Please email me at alpine82@optonline.net as soon as possible and let me know if a scenario like this would work for you. If I get enough positive feedback, then I'll ask the director if we can do something like this. Also let me know if the May 21 weekend is good or if we would need to make it over the summer or early fall. THANKS!

Comments: A little while back Barry Kantrowitz floated the idea of a 1 night Reunion in Rockland County at the Dellwood Country Club. It would be in June with the cost being somewhere in the $35-45 range per person. A bunch of people have emailed me to tell me that for a Range of different reasons {Distance, Financial, family etc..}that they will be unable to attend the Reunion on Camp Grounds in May. Lets see if we can really get this thing at the Dellwood off the ground. If you are interested PLEASE E-mail me ASAP and I will talk to Barry and try and make this Happen. Hope all is well with you and yours!

Comments: Just for fun I searched the net for "Camp Kendale" where I spent the summer 1981 as a counselor. It turned out to be one of the most important experiences in my life. I don't think that a lot of people will remember me, but certainly the boys from our bunk (I don't remember all the names, but one kid was named Evan Bernard and Jeremy Wiles. The other counselors were Eric Schultheis and Stew ?) I also remember Dom Auci and Phil Wiseman (= other counselors). I have a lot of fotos from the time and would love to hear from someone, perhaps I will post some pics later.

Comments: went to kendale from 62-70. those were some the best times of my life. i still remember most of the good things about camp but i can't seem to remember the little things we used to complain about. one of the great pranks of all time was pulled on our bunk during our waiter summer. the girls baked us a cake made from EX-LAX stole our toilet paper and locked us in our bunk with pad locks and chains. WASN'T CAMP THE BEST ! i'm a little older now retired and living on long island married with two sons 17 and 23. i still check the toilet paper situation isn't it great all the stuff we learn at camp. i'd love to hear from people and share some memories.

Comments: Hi Everyone! I hope everbody had a happy new year's celebration and I wish everyone the best for 2000! As you've been reading, Andy and I have been working with the current director of the camp at the old Kendale grounds to have a reunion up there in May of 2000. If we are going to pull this off, we need commitments as soon as possible! Please let me or Andy know ASAP if you can make that weekend (May 19-21) and how many people plan to attend. We have to let the director know by the end of January or Middle of February at the latest. Again, and with no disrespect to those who have been writing regarding a NYC reunion, this does NOT have to be an all or nothing thing. There are many of us who believe that a reunion anywhere but up at camp just wouldn't have the same meaning and overall feeling! Yes the idea is to try to get as many people as possible to attend, but, Andy and I, and many others feel that a reunion up at camp would be so much more than just a gathering of old friends for one night to have drinks, exchange cards and then go home; it would be a chance to relive some of the memories that are locked away in all our hearts! (not to get overly syrupy here). I undertand that logistics (family, finances, etc) may not allow everyone to go to a reunion up at S. Windham and that spouses, if they chose to attend, would probably be bored. The obvious solution is TWO reunions (there would probably be a lot of overlap!!) Andy and I have gotten the ball rolling for a S. Windham reunion…how about somebody else organizing a NYC (Jersey, or whatever) reunion. I'll certainly go to both (assuming they're not the same weekend!). Scott, great piece about the ballfield - it brought back lots of good memories! Comments: Happy New Year to all!! Although a reunion at the camp would be fun, I have to agree that a NYC reunion would be easier and draw a bigger crowd. I would be happy to help with plans for a NY or NJ reunion. This site has been great--I would love to hear from anyone who went to camp with me (1972-1979).

I'm living in Union City, NJ and getting married in Feb. I'm sorry I missed the reunion in Oct., but would love to make it in 2000. Anywhere's good for me. Manhattan...CT. Where-ever. Comments: Happy Holidays to all! Just came back from dinner at Lee Ganbarg's new restaurant in Ridgewood, NJ. It was certainly a lot better than anything we ever saw at camp! Great job Lee-- good luck with the new place. I agree completely with Paul Karp. Lets set up an alternative NYC reunion for those of us with little kids and spouses who really aren't ready to make the trek up to camp yet. Lee offered his restaurant in Ridgewood for a Sunday afternoon--it can seat about 65 people with a buffet lunch\brunch. Or how about a loft in NYC?? I promise to help if someone has some good ideas. In the meantime, it was great hearing from Stacy Lyons and Rina Ross--Does anyone know where Kim Buckner--Jeannie Strassberger or Wendy Auerbach are??Regards to all--Barry

Comments: $420 for my family of 5 if I decided to go to the Reunion on the camp grounds? I think that would be kind of pricey for a lot of people out there. I've been saying for months that I think you would have a MUCH larger turnout if we had a 1 night in NYC reunion. I agree with my cousin Ruth that bored spouses would not have to attend and listen to a bunch of people talk about old times for hours. We could also probably get away with $35-50 per person for food and Drink! What is the consensus? Am I way off base here? Isn't the goal to get as many people to come to a reunion as possible?

Comments: And the counselor got real angry. He told the little boy to get out of the bunk, walk to the ballfield, raise his arms and hold up the sky. The little boy, fearing the loss of canteen the next day, complied. It was a cool night, August nights are cool in Connecticut, you know. The trees beyond the ballfield were rustling in a light breeze. The sounds of counselors returning from their nights off were just fading from the parking lot. And so, the little boy stood, all alone, on a pitch black night, in the middle of the ballfield. A heavy voice from inside the bunk thundered, "Now hold up the sky" Again the little boy complied. But when he did, he noticed something wonderous. The sky was alive, brilliant with thousands of blinking lights, the big and little dippers, orion, they were all there, just beyond his reach. The vast expanse lay in front of his eyes, the magnificence of creation dancing in front of his face. And he has been reaching for the sky ever since, never seeing it, the way he saw it before that night, again. A Healthy and Happy New Year to all.

Comments: Ok gang, here's the deal with the campsite reunion: It's going to cost us $150.00 a person. It includes the use of all facilities except their small pool and horseback riding. If you want to bring kids under 10 and put them in their special program it's about another $40.00. Marc and I tried of course to get the cost down but they need additional staff and insurance. They want to charge another $15.00 for T-shirts but I will try to get that done cheaper. Send in your comments to the guest book ASAP. The date is set for May 19-21. Hope you all have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

I lived next store to the Strauss's and stopped going to Kendale when they sold the camp. My older brothers Hal and Barry went to camp with me as well as an extended family of friends. Including the The Mayers (Alan and Robbie), and The Plattes (Jeff and Leigh). I laughed out loud when my brother pointed me to the URL. I haven't thought about Kendale in years but I had great times there and loved going summer after summer. I would love to get e-mail from anyone who remembers sharing a memory or a bunk with me. Comments: Attention Snowbirds and Florida residents: Mitch Lemus and I are planning a Kendale South Florida reunion which is tentatively scheduled to be held on Wednesday, December 22, 1999 in Fort Lauderdale. For further information please email me at 2slade@bellsouth.net. This is just a warm up for the big one at the camp site which is being planned for next year. I am sure that some of you will be down here that time of year. Won't you join us ? Also, here is my two cents on the location of the big reunion. There is no substitute for actually being at the Camp site. When my wife and I visited the camp site last August it was amazing how many memories came flooding back just by being there. I hope to see you all there. If we can come up from Florida, surely you can all make it from the New York City area.

Comments: This is so amazing... My sister, Kelly Alpert, and I were at Kendale from 1977-1985. Kelly was only 5 her first year, and I was seven. I remember getting on the bus for the first time, not knowing what to expect... And I remember crying the last week of every summer, miserable that it was over. It makes me so sad to think that my daughter (Alex, 6 months) won't have Kendale in her life. And like Jamie Koppel, now singing camp songs to her daughter, I do the same. It's incredible reading everyone's messages...seeing counselors (Jill Strauss, Linda Corwin...) and campers (Wendy Spiesman...)that I absolutely loved. Even Lee Gambarg, who may not remember me, was Lee-Lee to me as younger girl at camp. It's funny how I can think of every Alma-Mater, Cheer, March, etc... for every color war year. I miss Kendale. I would LOVE a reunion. But I am almost scared to go back to camp, knowing that I could see it in a different way now. My memories are too perfect for that. Maybe NYC...

I come to NY on business often and South Windham is only a hop, skip and a jump. It really is great to see all the old names if the reunion is some time in May I’m sure I will make it. Comments: First off, I'm being linked in with the same generation as my husband! Sorry Rog! I am from the late 70's, early 80's! I don't believe Roger was giving me the time of day when I was twelve and he was well,,, with the older, more experienced women! But on this we agree-we would both love to come to camp for a weekend and have a campfire, play capture the flag, have a softball game, and hit the town (?) without a curfew. It would be pretty magical to sit on the beach and reminisce, sing camp songs and experience it all over again. We do need the guitar players though. We would love to see people from camp and would probably come up for both reunions. It sounds like to have both kinds, one in the city and one at camp, would be the best idea and just split them up in time. Maybe switch off if this becomes an ongoing thing. So that's my vote. We're planning a Florida reunion over the holidays, so if anyone is going to be down visiting the grandparents or parents, let us or Mitch Lemus know!

Comments: Andy, glad to hear that the response has been so positive to the idea of a reunion up at the camp grounds! As we're writing this, we're sitting here in Ron Zucker's (Marc Arkind, Evan Kutner and Ron Zucker), looking through hundreds of old Kendale photos. Each photo brings back memories of that special time and place in all of our hearts... and to think that none of this would have happened if not for this web site. It's nice to see people writing in and keeping this phenomenon going... as we read the responses from people wanting the reunion in NYC vs up at camp all we can say is this: definitely do it...people will come, but that shouldn't be a substitute for one u at camp! Each would be a blast, but would be different. A reunion in the city could precede one at camp and perhaps even help build enthusiasm for more. But as the three of us look through these old photos and relive the memories, it's clear that as nice as it would be to get together in the city for drinks, etc., going back to where it all happened would be the ultimate trip down memory lane... yeah it would be nice to drink and dance and exhcange stories and business cards and all that (and it should happen!), but now imagine the opportunity, for a weekend, to be a camper again...to swim in the lake, hang out in the rec hall, build a campfire at the beach, eat hockey pucks, go to the "willi bowl" ...well, you get the picture. Many of you who have been writing in are in these photos...it would be great to see you all up at camp again for a weekend! As one of the "older" Kendalers we definitely vote for the reunion at camp, though we would go to both, as we're sure many people would. Let's make them both happen!

Now it is one of the staple tunes sung to Sydney by my husband and I in this house. Hey whatever works right?? I am so happy to see how strong the Kendale bond continues to be. The memories from my so many years at Kendale just don't seem to die. I am still very close with Lisa Kane who is now Lisa Contreni and pregnant with TWINS!! Comments: All those years of Paul Karp being head OD and carrying that clip board have obviously paid off. I think you are on the right track w/NYC as the place. NYC would be easy to plan, have a solid showing, and enable the hard core "Indian Summer" crowd to promote and firm up plans for an on-site reunion. I would love to be able to that, however with kids, work etc., it is not realistic. But maybe? Russ and I would be happy to make the Tuna, Hockey pucks and bug juice. By the way Paul, last week after years of extensive therapy, I have found it in my heart to forgive you for splitting up Jenn Fine and myself on our Color War teams. Why are so many of the late 70's early 80's people laying low? All the drugs must have worn off by now. Stop reading and start writing.

You want to be able to freely talk about the old days with out having to worry that your Non-Kendale spouse is bored to tears. Does anyone have any suggestions as to a spot in NYC where we could hold this Reunion. If someone has a suggestion I would be glad to make the calls and try and negotiate the details. I definitely think there would be a much higher showing if we met in NYC. As much as I would love to run around the Camp's grounds I think it would be hard for people to get there. Comments: Okay guys, you can see how the "older" Kendalers had their little reunion and are reminiscing on how great it was! Aside from Paul and Glenn pushing for the Big Apple why aren't more people voicing their support? Wasn't this a "rah-rah" camp? (Charlie, did I spell that right?) Shawn, you're "Mr. E-mail," are you in? Where's Tony Wiles? Paul Marchand (the Hick)? Nancy Reckler? Anyone heard from Kim Buckner? She ever sleep with Springsteen? Charlie and I spoke today, are spouses in? They may feel "left out" of the conversations. I'm easy either way. More people from Kendale of the early 80's need to speak up. Lynda, even you must be curious to see some of the same old faces? Hope everyone is happy and healthy. By the way, Caroline Palmer's picture of Lon Kaminsky is no relation of mine. That was Lon Kamerman. Where is "Matzoh Bry" Karen?

I'm also VERY happy that the responses were from people from all three decades. I think it would be great for alumni from the sixties to share stories with those from the 80's. Comments: First, let me just say to Norm Kent regarding his poem on our mini reunion in Central Park: WOW!! That poem brought a smile to my face and tears to my eyes! What a tribute to days gone by, recovered, savored and longed-for again! :-) Next, on this reunion thing...hey everyone, it doesn't have to be just one! (as our recent "impromptu" gathering in NYC proved). I for one vote wholeheartedly for South Windham, as for me, no other place would capture the spirit and essence of those wonderful camp days. Sure it's the people that made it special, but getting together for drinks, dancing, partying, etc. in a hotel somewhere in NYC just wouldn't be the same as sleeping in the old bunks, having a cookout and sing-along at the beach, playing a softball game on the old ballfield, going to Friendly's in town for a fribble, boating on the lake, seeing the color war placques on the wall (even the ugly Army 69 one!), hearing Goldy play "reveille" before breakfast and just reveling in the aura of the place that many of us spent a good part of our youth in! A reunion in NYC would be just that...a reunion, but one up at camp would be a chance to, at least for a couple of days, relieve a very special time in all our hearts and memories! But, that said, there's no reason why we can't do one in NYC in addition to one up at camp - it doesn't have to be all or nothing! I'm sure there would be quite a bit of overlap and the worst is that many of us would get to see each other twice! (not a bad downside!) I've already volunteered to help Andy Strauss with the S. Windham weekend (Andy and I visited camp last month - check out the pictures if you haven't already!) and would be happy to help with a NYC gathering as well. As our little reunion in Central Park last month proved, it doesn't have to be elaborate - just plan it and people will come! And by all means, all ex-Kendalers...don't wait for a "formal" reunion either...seek out your old camp buddies now and start making new memories! So, whether it's NYC, South Windham or hopefully both...let's JUST DO IT!!

Comments: Posted some new 1999 pictures from a mini reunion last week. They are at the photopoint site under the Kendale 1999 album! It looks like the old timers ("alumni from before 1977) seem to prefer a Connecticut reunion and the post 1979 alumni prefer NYC. Maybe its because the "old timers'" kids are older and its less of a hassle for them to schlep everyone, including the babies off to Kendale. Why can't we have two?? One night in NYC and a weekend at camp next summer? If someone in NYC can recommend a specific place I'll help with the organization.

Comments: wow !!!!! how amazing is this web thing, to be reintroduced to a large group of people who have one strong bond in common, the memories of a few hundred acres of land outside the smallest little hic town (i hope no one relocated there after camp), and the desire to revisit the incredible events of our youth, that helped shape the essence of who we are today. I spent 15 years at merrydale/kendale and had the rare experience of going from one of the youngest campers to becoming a color war general. I am so proud of that part of my life. There are so many locations in camp that i can just beam back to. I can close my eyes and walk down the path to the lake and smell the manure, as I pass the stables (nice!!!), sitting on the barn stage, checking out who, was dating who, as they walked by to their darker destinations, being in the back of a yellow bus hearing the sound of the gears grinding, as it labored up babcock hill after some camp trip, or an intercamp game, being out in a canoe in the middle of the lake, with one of your best friends, thinking about nothing and everything, standing in front of the dining hall listening to Goldy at flag raising, and noticing how wet the front of your sneakers were, waiing for a laundry bag bigger than your body in the laundry shack, wondering what that burnt smell was, the way your bunk looked the last night of camp, all the cubbies bare, and giant trunks all around. I think the reunion should be where our memories are.

I for one would not be able to attend a reunion in South Windham as much as I would like to. I still think that the turnout at a 1 night {Friday or Saturday} reunion in NYC would be much higher. Isn't the point of a Reunion to get the most people possible to attend? If the majority of people don't agree with me than so be it. But, In my heart I believe that there would be a SIGNIFICANTLY higher turnout in NYC for a 1 night bash than an all weekend affair in South Windham Ct.

Comments: Well you guys and gals sure looked like you were having a great time. Sorry I couldn't be there. First let me say that everyone looked great, if a little bit older. I need to know Robin Pomerantz' secret. If we could bottle it it is a sure money maker. I also looked at some of the batting stances. Good thing none of you were serious about baseball. (Except for Kent). After the election(Nov. 2), I hope to see at least some of you. Take care all, you are truly special people.Scott.

Comments: Wow! This site has grown! I am so thrilled to read entry's from everyone especially my 1st counselors when I was just 6 years old - Vicki and Sheryl!!! Remeber Bunk #1? Don't worry I've caught up in age, I'm 33 now! Andy and Marc, the pictures from Camp are awesome. It was almost like being there. I remember how impressed I always was with the color war plaques. I am so happy that these treasures are still in tact and on display. Just a note - Green sorcerors faced white royalty (not Magic). While it would probably be more practical to have the reunion in the city, the thought of sleeping in a bunk, having a camp fire down by the lake, making counselor stew and having a mini-color war are too much to pass up!! Let's do it at Kendale!

Comments: To echo Mark Arkinds words "Saturday in the Park" was and still is one of my favorite songs and always reminds me of camp. What a great day! I must admit I recongnized all the faces however some of the the names escaped me. When I walked into Mickey Mantles I was overwhelmed at first, but quckly settled in. It is truly incredible that after all the years, the bond of friendship that was cultivated in Kendale is so strong. I felt such a feeling of warmth, belonging, and love. It was as if camp ended August 1999. I am so happy that I brought my children to witness the type of relationships that are forged at camp. I look forward to the reunion which has to be at the campgrounds. Who knows I might even play revele or taps on the trumpet( for those of you who remember). Goldy

Comments: Back in the 70's the rock group Chicago had a song "Saturday in the Park." It was one of my favorite songs and hearing it always brings back good memories. This past "Saturday in the Park" (Central Park, NYC) did more than bring back good memories! For the 19 or so of us who showed up at Mickey Mantle's and later Central Park it was truly an experience to remember and savor! (Vickie Littman, Sheryl Rubloff, Ronny Zucker, Evan Kutner, Jeff Rosner, Andy Strauss, Richie Arnstein, Richie Lefkowitz, Robin Lefkowitz, Mitch Lemus, Jeff Ostrove, Bruce Maggin, Alan Rosenberg, "Yac", Robin Pomerantz, "Goldy", Mark Friedberg, Marc Arkind and of course, our good friend and the inspiration for this whole gathering: Norm Kent! -- If I left anybody out, I apologize and will blame it on the temporary and hopefully long-lasting euphoric high!) For me, personally, it was a trip through a time-tunnel; it was as if time has stood still and we were all kids again, laughing, talking, eating, drinking and later playing softball in Central Park. It didn't matter that I threw 3 balls in the dirt that Friedberg had to scoop out (at least Ronny Z still had his stuff at shortstop!), or that Rosner hit into a double play (in softball!...but it was a close play!...sorry Jeff, couldn't resist!) or even that we lost the game! It all felt so good and seemed so natural and familiar! I wish I could take a digital photo of the essence of the day and keep it frozen in time, but then again, I know that for the 19 of us who were there the moment in time will be forever frozen in our minds, just as all those wonderful experiences from Camp Kendale are! Saturday was living proof of just how special a place Camp Kendale was and even more so, how special the people who went there were and still are! Thanks everyone for a day I'll never forget! To those of you who couldn't make it, Andy Strauss and I are working on a reunion for late Spring 2000 up at Camp!! We went to visit the current director this past Friday (look for pictures of camp as it looks today as soon as Mitch figures out where to put them!) and the director is very receptive to the idea! I'll post details, as they emerge in the reunion section! We'd like to get 100 or more ex-Kendalers to come to this one (we plan to have activities and have it be a camp experience!...sleeping in the bunks, boating and campfires at the lake, softball games, maybe even a mini color war!) so tell everyone you know. We're shooting for either the weekend before Memorial Day or the weekend after.

Comments: If one is lucky enough in their lifetime to know some very special people and have the opportunity to see them throughout their lives then I consider myself very blessed. "Sunday in the park with Norm" was one of those times. Seeing all those friends again was unbelievable. To me it was like we never left. We had a lot of fun in the park and had a lot of laughs. I know we all go on with our daily lives and are happy doing so but somewhere in the backs of all our minds there is and I hope will always be that connection between all of us that will keep us forever loyal Kendale campers . Thanks everyone for a great weekend, Love Vickie

I went to Kendale from 1972-1976 as a camper and then in 1979 as a counselor. Barry's call, and this sight, have really stirred the memories. I think a reunion would be great. I vote for New York City--it seems to be most central. Now I have to go and dig out my old camp pictures...

Comments: Hey all ex-Kendalers...On Oct. 2 & 3 a group of us are planning to have another mini-renunion in NYC and on LI. We're meeting on Sat. Oct 2nd at Mickey Mantle's in NYC (5th Ave. at Central Park) at 12:00 noon, and then either going to Central Park to play football/softball, or will just hang out, depending on the weather and how many people show up. Norm is flying up from Florida and is hoping to hit one from one end of the park to the other! :-) Andy Strauss has volunteered to bring equipment (except gloves). So come on everyone...join us for a day of fun in Central Park or if you can't make it Saturday, on Sunday, Oct 3, we're going to meet for brunch at the LI Marriott, in Uniondale. I'm going to make a reservation for brunch, so anybody who plans to attend, let me know so I can give the Marriott a head count and get a few tables reserved for us! Tell everyone you know! Hope to see you on the 2nd, 3rd, or both!

Comments: Hi everyone. After waiting for weeks for Paul Karp and Kenny Austin to come help me sort through and scan old Kendale pictures, I decided to try it myself. I spent hours over the rainy holiday weekend laughing, scanning, posting, losing, cursing, and finally successfully creating a set of online photo albums for the summers of 1977-81. They are not done yet, but there are pictures now in each album. I’ll try to update often so bookmark the album list when you find it. Here’s the URL:http://albums.photopoint.com/j/AlbumList?u=81688. Mitch is going to post a link to the list of albums somewhere on the site so you can click and go directly there . . . hopefully. Please let me know if I messed up on dates, people etc. There are some blanks– let me know and I’ll fill them in. Send me your comments via email– or call to say hello- I’m in the book. A NYC reunion seems to be the easiest. Its weatherproof, and if it’s successful, we can ambitiously try to set something up at the camp. Its great seeing the comments from everyone. Does anyone know where to find: Allan Marquesano? Jodi Levokove? Jeannie Strassberger? Gail Friedberg (NYC Lawyer)? How about that famous alumnus TV star Ken Ober?Best wishes to all- Happy Holidays where applicable–keep smiling about the good old days!!

Mitch, if you run out of space on prodigy and need to go to another ISP, I'd also be willing to make a contribution to help keep this thing going and I'm sure I'm not alone! As for the reunion, I read your FAQ's and definitely agree about a long weekend thing both in the city and up at camp. It seems than many of us are going to try to get together in Oct when Norm Kent comes up to NY...let's all talk then and brainstorm some dates and ideas. I'm willing to help organize and coordinate anything we do down in the city area; I think the Strausses would be best suited to try to arrange something up at camp (how about it Andy?), though I'm more than willing to help out with that as well. If anyone wants to take a ride up to South Windham to check it out, let me know and I'll go with you! In any case, let's keep the momentum going and get something going! If anyone else is able and willing to help plan something, get in touch with me (and everyone you know from camp!) and we'll get the ball rolling!

Comments: Yeah, it's me again!..or as Mitch so eloquently put it, the one with the compulsive computer disorder! :-)... Hey, on this renunion thing... it looks like it's pretty close between NYC and up at the old campgrounds! Here's a novel idea: how about TWO reunions; one in NYC somewhere and the other up in S. Windham, perhaps even the same weekend! I agree that more people would be able to make a NYC gathering, but somehow, getting together up at the old camp would, at least for me, be a magical experience that just couldn't be duplicated anywhere else on earth! I also have to thank Vicki Littman for calling me at work and embarrassing me to reveal my whereabouts! This site has brought back so many great memories. I was a waiter and then counselor from ~1968-1973, living through some of the greatest experiences with true friends. Following college, I went off to graduate school in Florida (Gainesville) and saw Richie Comiter on occasion. I then moved to Maryland and worked at Johns Hopkins Medical School, the National Institutes of Health and a biotechnology company. In 1983 I married Michele and we have two great children, Max (13) and Alissa (10). Both kids have been enjoying the camp experience for a number of years. At the end of 1997, my family and I decided to chuck everything, we sold our home, quit my job and moved to beautiful Vancouver, British Columbia (3 hrs north of Seattle). I am currently the VP of research and development for another biotechnology company. Our family loves to ski, hike, kayak, scuba dive and salmon fish as often as we can. Anybody who finds themself heading west should give us a call. I could not make the last Kendale reunion but would definitely plan on being at the next one (hopefully in NYC). Please don’t hesitate to contact me. Love OCK!

Comments: After our mini reunion last Thursday in NYC, I wondered if it was just a one-night stand, so to speak...would another 25 years pass before any of us spoke or saw each other again! Well, the answer came soon enough! Last night, Evan Kutner and Ronny Zucker joined me and some of my beer club buddies for beer and Indian food in the East Village! Evan, Ronny and I spoke and exchanged emails all week and coordinated meeting. Though I hadn't seen Ronny since I was a counselor back in 1974, I recognized him instantly as we both walked down East 7th street, cell phones in hand, to greet each other! Again I was transported back in time...to a tetherball court watching the ball wrap around the poll without me getting so much as a tap of the ball! Evan showed up minutes later and we spent the next several hours chatting about old times, catching up with each others' lives (Ronny showed us pictures of his two boys and Evan told us about how he's going to be on Comedy Central next Monday at 10:00 or 10:30...so tune you dials everyone!!) and planning the next time to get together! (We'd like to do something on LI late Sept or October some time, so anyone who would like to make it get in touch with one of us!!!) Norm Kent plans to be up in NY Oct 2 & 3rd and play touch football in Central Park!..maybe we can make one big get together around that! I'd be willing to have a bbq at my house for anyone that would want to come and then we could all go into the city for those drinks...or play football first, then have some drinks, then go to my place for a bbq...whatever! After these last 2 mini reunions, just seeing as many of you as possible would be terrific! As for a formal reunion, I still vote for up at the old Campgrounds, but will happily attend one whereever it is! I'm willing to help plan and organize...let's definitely get this ball rolling! Be well everyone and hope to see all of you real soon!

Comments: Talk about time standing still-Roger and I took our boys up North for a vacation last week. We started in New Hampshire (visited Shelly Heit), went through Boston, and maybe it was all the nostalgia that this web site has brought out in us, but we ended up at Mystic Seaport! We sat in the same grassy circle-not enough people to play duck-duck goose- and it's still pretty boring there! When we got in the car to leave- Route 32 was yelling at us from the map- 25 minutes later (and after Roger stopped for a Fribble to get the full effect) -we were walking in camp with our boys! It is the same great beautiful camp-with the addition of a great administrative building (WITH AIR CONDITIONING!) We walked down to the lake and went into the rec hall-Our curtain is still up with Camp Kendale on it and the color war plaques are still there. It is really unbelievable how you can be transported back in time just by being in a place! It was really great to go into the bunks and read the graffitti and remember all the events that happened for each of us throughout the grounds. The camp is being put to great use-we can all be happy about that. Just wanted to share........It was truly a great time!

Comments: Last night I spoke with Linda and Roger Slade. We were jealous of the mini reunion that Lemus, Strauss, Santa, Rosner, and Kutner had, so we would like to have our own mini reunion here in So. Florida. There are many Kendalers living in the So. Florida area, or have relatives that they visit once or twice a year. For those living in the area currently, lets try to set something up in the very near future. For those who will be visting, maybe we can set a target date for everyone to be in town at the same time. Anyone interested should E-mail myself or Linda Slade.

Comments: My lord how time goes by. I had not seen Santa,Evan or Marc in over 20 years. I must say we've all aged pretty gracefully. I felt like I was in "Big Chill Part 2". Evan's pictures were incredible. Jeff startled crowd yelling at the garbage truck. I was catching a buzz on some beers. Rosner says we must have reunion at camp. Perhaps we can have two, one in the city as well. Maybe even on the same long weekend. I'm still waiting for cost on campsite. Mitch Strauss was there on Aug.10. He said cost would depend upon what we would eat. I say keep it simple( burgers, hotdogs, spaghetti, etc. Don't think they know recipe for hockey pucks!). Need someone to step up for NYC locale. I will find out about Portchester Temple in September when Masons reconvene. We're gonna do it. Just be patient.

Comments: Sometimes truth is stranger than fiction! Last night was an episode right out of the twilight zone and a very pleasant one at that! I kept expecting Rod Serling to pop up on a big TV screen and tell me not to adjust my dial! What happens when 6 people (Evan Kutner, Andrew Santamaria, Andy Strauss, Mitch Lemus, Jeff Rosner and Marc Arkind) all different and unique in their own ways, who haven't seen each other in 25 years, get together for drinks in NYC? Answer: something so truly remarkable and wonderful that mere words cannot begin to describe it! I was at first apprehensive about even going. I worried about what I would say to these people, would they remember me, would they like me today, would I like them today...so many questions and apprehensions! It took all of about 30 seconds for all of those fears and worries to vanish into thin air!! The bonds we built 25 years ago were instantly renewed and it was as if we never lost touch! I think we all could have gone on all night reminiscing about camp days. The stories (and pictures - Evan, you're truly amazing!) were never-ending! Those were special times; the friendships we built then were as real and meaningful as any (at least for me) we've made since then. As Santa put it, just sharing a bunk, a shower, the dining table and doing everything else we did (and shouldn't have done! *smile*) for 2 months, summer after summer made those friendships so special and bonds so strong! How else could 6 people, who hadn't seen or spoke to each other for so long, just pick up as if time stood still??! I can honestly say (though I'd never have admitted it then) that I loved each and every one of my camp buddies. Being with all of you last night was more than a trip down memory lane...I left the city on cloud nine with a renewed spirit and overall warmth in my heart! I encourage ex-Kendalers, wherever you are, to seek each other out and plan and go to reunions, large or small. Call each other, write, email, shout out a window...whatever!! Those wonderful camp days don't have to be just a fleeting memory! Thanks again guys for an evening I'll never forget! :-)

Comments: 25 years, yesterday -- after last night I realize sometimes there really is no difference. People with a special bond can just pick up right where they left off. The dinner last night with Evan Kutner, Mitch Lemus, Andy Strauss, Marc Arkind and Jeff Rosner (who certainly made his presence felt in the short time he was there) was just unbelievable. As we all reminisced, the events, people and situations that came up just never stopped. We could have been there for days and never run out of stories to tell. We all have special friends in our lives. People from high school, college or the neighborhood but none to me are as special as the ones made at Kendale. How many of your other friends have you had to share a "bedroom" with for two months (and all that goes with that)? Year after year. Probably none. I can go on forever but I'll end by saying if you have a chance to speak to or visit with a former Kendalite, do it. Now!!! How good you will feel is equal to the excitement you felt as a kid in June when you knew you were going to Kendale again, to see your family.

On a personal note, I worked with Danny on the waterfront for 2 years ('76 & '77), I learned many things from him, one was to have a big heart, the other was just how much a drowning victim could struggle(since Dan was my victim for my ALS training) What I remember most about Tuna was when Danny and his son would dress up as clowns to entertain us kids, who were so far away from home. Danny, you will be missed! TUNA! TUNA! TUNA!

Comments: Well in a city where the unusual is usual, having dinner with 5 other people with whom I havent seen for a combined 125 years has to be pretty common place. Every name, every event and every place mentioned triggered another name, place and event that I had not even thought about --- in around 125 years (or at least 125 months). So thank you Mitch Lemus, Jeff Rosner, Marc Arkind, Andrew Santamaria and Andy Strauss for a trip that even Timothy Leary couldn't imagine. I am sure we kept the tables around quite us amused, and I am sure that the garbage trucks did not hear Jeff yelling at them. I know I was too busy having a Kodak moment in a Twilight Zone episode ---- "Why My Mother Continued to Send Me to Camp." I look forward to more episodes in a series that was not cancelled, with Cecil B. Demille casts of thousands. This even beats watching the lousy Spanish soaps at work. Finally in the immortal words of Frank Sinatra ---- when I was 17 (or 9 through), it was a very good year.

Comments: Hey all! This whole Kendale thing has really been great. I am thrilled to hear from Sheryl, Mark F. and Yac. Want to see everyone. Any news about a reunion. I was thinking about a hotel or something near Kennedy Airport (actually it was Andy Santa's idea) or some hotel location Even the Marriot in L.I. . A place bigger than last time with the rooms for out-of towners and even in-towners to sleep over. I really would be willing to get the ball rolling if Lemus or Andy Strauss would give me the o.k. By the was Sheryl informed me that my years at Kendale ended in 1977 not '80. Hope to hear from anyone soon.

Comments: Hi. I hope everyone is enjoying the summer. My kids just turned 6,4 and 2 all within a few weeks of each other. Time really speeds by. I checked to see the Reunion poll and it appears that a NY locale {NYC or Portchester} is leading South windham 26 Votes to 23 Votes. I just want to state again that I think the goal of this Reunion should be to have as many people show up as possible. I thought we had a really great turnout in 91. while it would be very nostalgic to stroll the camp grounds, I think many more people would come if it was held in NYC on a Friday or Saturday night. I would be willing to help organize as I did in 1991. I'm looking forward to seeing people and sharing memories.

I believe whereever the reunion is people will come but NYC might be the place for the easiest access. If you need help let me know. I truly cannot believe the news about Dan the Tuna. He was just the most gentle man with the biggest stature. He taught me not only how to play tennis but how to be a camper and a good person. I will miss him very much. Now, Scott I truly am sorry about neglecting your name in my search for old friends.. My in-laws live in Atlantic Beach Jeff Rosner where are you? Last time we saw each other was at a Christmas dinner -- remember. This year was my daughters first year at sleep away. I have told her many of my camp stories and hoped that she would come away with the same wonderful experiences that I had. I can't wait to see or hear from any of you.

Just a very happy mid summer update to the many of you have responded so thoughtfully to my column... i finished my last 'course' of chemotherapy last month- they call it courses as if you are going for meatballs and spaghetti- and after a series of scans, biopsies, needles, blood tests, and more, i am now in Remission City, which means cancer-free, right down to the bone marrow, and that is a very good place to be, even if there are no guarantees down the road (there never are anyway) .. Comments: I still remember one of the color war songs from the sing (final) night of color war.I believe it was the summer of 1972. I hope that it brings back some memories. It goes like this: Summer is slowing ending Thoughts of camp will last forever The friends we've made Will never fade From our memories We'll never forget The love that we have shared At Camp Kendale With the peace in our hearts That brings love to your soul With the friendships we've made That will never grow old The lake, the hills, the beauty here Engraved upon our minds As we leave this camp united Hand in hand we'll walk onwards To return, again next year So we hold our heads With pride and joy And always think of you Camp Kendale...... I don't remember the exact tune (it was slow and soft) but I still sing the song in my mind even after all these years.

Comments: Many tears were shed in my house in April. Most recently Dan was at Camp Walt Whitman, and my son Ross had the joy and pleasure of getting to know Dan at his camp. As the tears rolled down my face, I read him the letter that his camp sent ahead of time, and held him as he cried. My memories are of Dan the practical joker, and Dan, the man who joked "not at all" down at the waterfront. When I was earning my Life Saving Certificate, Dan was my victim. When I completed my "saves," I knew I had earned that certificate. On the other hand, Dan was always the one for joking around. I remember a visiting day standing on the basketball court, waiting for my folks, when Dan paged me back to my bunk after finding sand in my bed during inspection. I think I was a group leader at the time. I will always remember Dan with a smile and the utmost respect.

Comments: This site has brought me much joy, laughter and fond memories over the past week. It has truly transported me to a simpler place in time! It was with great sadness, that I read about the untimely passing of Dan Martineau! As Scott Nigro, so eloquently put it, Dan was truly one of a kind: fair, kind, honest, friendly and always willing to help someone in need. I never had the fortune to learn tennis from Dan, but I did have the honor of working under him at the waterfront, as boating instructor. I guess I also have the dubious "honor" of receiving the "Golden Tuna" award in 1974! For those of you who don't remember, the Golden Tuna award was a gold-painted toilet seat that Dan awarded (at banquet) to the person (or persons) who committed the biggest bonehead moves during the course of the summer! Dan, in his infinite wisdom, determined that going out in a sailboat to rescue a stranded boater, and getting stranded myself was worthy of this honor! (That, coupled with the fact that I got stranded onced again, in a canoe, while attempting to rescue someone from Pirate's Cove!) As Scott said, it seems like just yesterday that I last spoke to Dan and now that Golden Tuna award holds more of a special place in my heart! Hats (and toilet seats) off to Dan Martineau: a truly great guy!! :-) I'm sure Dan is up in heaven someplace teaching angels how to play tennis and do buddy counts! :-)

Comments: Andy was right. This site has made me smile more often than not. I suppose what I am going to say really belongs in I remember when but..Dan Martineau was a great guy. He always had a smile on his face and a kind word. That is of course until he got you on the Tennis Court. I saw him put so much spin on one of his shots that it hit in my court and bounced back over the net. Point Martineau. Dan had a way about him. He could put a new camper at ease immediately. I must admit that I have never seen a man so large move so fluidly and effortlessly, even with the bad knee. Not even Norm Kent was that graceful. Dan was also a master in the use of sarcasm. Sometimes you could not quite tell if he was complementing you or, well you know. He was also a man of integrity. He caught me coming in after curfew once. I thought I was out of the woods when he saw me, never thinking he would turn me in. Friend or not, I got my punishment although I can't really remember what it was. Funny thing about Kendale, you hear a name and you are immediately transported to a different time. While I hadn't seen him in over twenty years, I feel Dan's loss as I would if I said my last goodbye to him yesterday. I will choose to remember him moving in his own unique way on the tennis court, his big shirt and baggy shorts following his every fore or backhand. See ya later Dan.

Dan "Tuna" Martineau was killed in a car accident near his home in April. I think he was about 49 years old. I found out from the current director of the camp. Needless to say I was shocked and saddened. Most of you know Dan was the tennis and then waterfront counselor. He was with us at camp for about 10 years. He was very popular with the kids and in addition to the aforementioned positions would also entertain with magic and clown acts. He was active in his community sports programs and will be sorely missed there as well. There was a field day in his memory recently.

Waterskiing on the lake (if what I did can be called skiing) is a fond memory along with the night bowling trips, midnight raids, campouts at the lake...and especially that waiter's camping weekend Norm took us on, with Norm putting us through his version of "hell night" and shooting squirrels with a B-B gun all weekend! Comments: Another suggestion. Many camps keep their facilities open right after the camp season ends for different Alumni weekends and family camp. If we decide to have the reunion at camp, it might make sense to try and have it right after the season ends. This way some of the facilities will still be intact, the fields ready for use, etc. Also, depending on how we structure this, i.e., with or without children, maybe some of the counselors would stay on the help out. Just a thought. If we decide to pursue this idea, let me know. My mom did a lot of the planning for Point 'O Pines family camp and might have some suggestions for us. Can't wait to see you all again!! (And meet the folks who came after, too)

It's eerie how little has changed. Graffiti still on the walls and cubbies of the bunks, plaques in the rec hall and yes, the lake is still there. However, if Arnie is not there, it just won't be the same and my vote would then change to NYC.

At that time I will attempt to gather details on costs, etc on a possible reunion weekend. As soon as we return I will post details. As an incentive to have the reunion up there I have been informed that the current directors would like to auction off the surviving Color War plaques. We could spend part of a morning or afternoon to take care of that business. More details about that when we return from our trip. Because of all the planning that would need to be done for a reunion up there I don't anticipate a date earlier than April of 2000. A good time might be around Memorial Day.

I'm running to a meeting so can't put the time in now for nostalgia but i've got pictures, old song sheets from color war (mimeographed), and as you can imagine a "few" classic stories. The names on the guest list bring back some amazing memories as a warden for the criminals, Lemus, Nigro, Slade, Messina etc.(where is finnman where is the nurses experiment called Robert Tohn?????) Memories of being a camper span more than 12 years hundreds of friends and great counsellors, thanks Enormas. Back to you guys soon. I still live in manhattan-212-505-1666 call me if you dare!!!!!!

It's just to get an idea of what people are thinking. So vote now -- otherwise you're docked from Free Play. :-)

Comments: Glad to see that Andy has the reunion ball rolling. for what its worth, I think that having the Reunion in NYC makes the most sense. I think the goal of the Reunion should be to have as many people as possible attend. I think A NYC locale insures the greatest amount of participation. While it would be fun to walk the camp grounds, I do not think you would get nearly as many people to attend as if you have the reunion be a one day or night affair in NYC. Just my opinion. I hope this thing comes together and we can all see each other soon.

Comments: Ok I guess I should get the ball rolling with a reunion probably because I'm a Strauss. So here it goes: 1) New York City: Pro's: Easy access by train and bus, located near majority of alumni. Cons: For those that must drive tough(usually) and expensive parking(always, must conform to train schedules. Depending upon time of day, TRAFFIC! 2) Portchester, NY: At the Portchester Masonic Temple: Pros: Parking avaiable for about 20 cars, reasonable street parking. Facility has a large basement area made for dining, meetings, etc with a kitchen. It can hold about 150 people. Cons: A bit isolated, you can take a train but would need to take a cab or be picked up from station. 3) At the camp site: Pro's: Atmosphere could set tone for a great day or weekend. May be able to stay in cabins and experience a reasonable facimile of what once was. We could plan activities in a "Club Med" type setting. Cons: Difficult to get to without car. Bus ride from city can be brutal(I've done it). Willimantic ain't what it was in the 80's. Ex campers couln't even find Giant Pizza. But Kathy John's still exists. Last but not least would be most expensive especially if we had to stay at the motel. Please vote for your favorite. Or suggest your own I will investigate costs for Portchester and the camp site.

Comments: Hi All, I attended Kendale from 1965-1972 as a camper and counselor. I think about Kendale often, all the wonderful friends and fun times. I always wish there was summer camp for Adults. I spoke to Norm Kent recently and he told me about this site. What fun. I have lots of pictures and will try to get some time to scann them and send them over when I get home (I am currently in Thailand on business). I still have some Camp Kendale sweatshirts (was never able to part with them), and should be able to dig up some Color War songs. I remember Kendale every time I pass a Friendly's and think about Fribbles in Willamantic. Anyone remember visiting the grave yard there? Would love to hear from some formor Kendaler's that remember me. Will be back to this site soon. Robin.

Comments: I had dinner with Andy Strauss about 2 weeks ago, and had a GREAT time remembering old times. Of course the subject of a reunion came up, and we had a few ideas. The first one was to have a reunion in NYC. This was done in '91. The next idea was to have a reunion on the camp grounds itself. Andy thnks it could be arranged so all us Kendalers could go back to where the magic of summer was created for us. This would be like our own "Field of Dreams". The memories that were of a time gone by would flood our memory banks. They'd be so thick, you'd have to brush them from in front of your face. I for one would make an effort to make it if it were held there. What do you guys think?

Comments: Over the past few weeks the Kendale site has been quite busy. The word has been spreading, and alumni have been popping up faster than bugs in the bug juice. Some folks have even been talking about organizing another reunion. (Anyone have pictures of the '91 reunion?) Some of you "lurkers" have contacted me personally, but have not posted publicly in this Guest Book or in the Contact Exchange. You people know who you are... don't be shy, let everyone know you're out there and how to contact you. Many of you have told me you have tons of pictures you'd like to contribute, but no scanner. Here's what you can do: 1) Make friends with the computer geek in your office. Offer to buy him pizza and a Coke for a few minutes of his time. 2) Bring your pictures to a Kinkos or your local film processing center. Most of them can digitize your pictures and put them on a disk for a few dollars. Don't send me every Kendale picture you have; just some of the best and clearest. Pictures of people only, please. No empty canoes or vacant tetherball courts. Please let me know the year of the photo, and the people in them. Save pictures in JPG format (not GIF or BPM or any other format), and try to keep them under 60kb, otherwise they will be too large making them too long to load. And I will have to manually reduce the size of the photos myself. Also, if you are sending a lot of pictures, it would be better to send them to my office e-mail address, (mlemus@bluemarble.com) where I have a much faster connection on a T1 line. What might also be nice, I was thinking, if people sent in both pictures of themselves as campers, along with recent photos with their kids and family – that I could put up side by side. Sort of like the VH1 TV program, "Where Are They Now." Some of you have wondered about the banner ads on the Guest Book. The Guest Book is actually it's own domain -- a third-party utility that I have very little control over. The beauty of the Guest Book is that you can post information instantly and automatically, without me getting involved. In exchange for providing that service, the Guest Book company sells ad space across the top of their pages. That's how they make money. I do not get any of it. I do this because I thought it would be a great way for everyone to reconnect, because it's fun, because no-one else was doing it, and because I'm a nice guy. It's also somewhat time-consuming. And so, I'm looking around for a free picture-posting board, similar to the Guest Book, that would allow Kendale alumni to instantly and automatically post pictures as well. If anybody knows of anything like this, let me know. STORIES: The Kendale site needs more stories for the "I Remember When" section. I know you've got them, so give 'em up. If you write less than three paragraphs, just post your anecdote in the Guest Book. For longer stories, don't worry if you're not a great writer. I can edit and clean up your stories so you come across reading like Tom Wolff. (I write advertising for a living). By the way, if anyone needs a Web site, brochure or print advertising for their small business, give me a shout. OK, everybody back to "Free Play…"

I worked at Kendale in 1977 and 1979-1983. I was thinking about that and realized that I had actually spent 1 year of my life there. Seeing that picture of me, Karen Elissa and Barry just made me smile. There were so many super memories over the years. It was just a magical place. From Color War to the "Dorse" to "omen baby" and "Wet Livers." The reunion back in 1991 {or was it 90} was Fun. It was great to see old faces and catch up and share stories and memories of a place that was obviously so special to so many people. I truly hope that we all meet again at another reunion in the not to distant future. I would love to hear from people so fire away with those Emails!

Comments: Made my first post last night 4/23/99 and already got an E-mail from Roger Slade this morning. I love the Internet! I was just reflecting back on my times at camp and felt like making another post, so here it is: Camp Kendale gave so many of us a special place to go during the long, hot summers, and I know I will never forget it or the family atmosphere that was created for us in a place so far from our homes. It is a shame with what's going on in the world (Littleton, Co. for example) where the youth of today is. We were lucky to have a place like Camp Kendale to go and enjoy ourselves. They were much simpler times back then. Unfortunately we can only turn the clock back 1 hour per year, what I would give to turn it back years for 1 hour! Once again, thanks to everyone for making my summers a time to remember! Alan Messina 1972-74, 76,77

My brother Brian told me about the sight tonight, so of course I had to check it out. I was a camper in 72-74, and CIT/Boating-Water Skiing instructor from 76-77. I remember so many of the people mentioned in the guest book, , Jeff Rosner was my counselor, Richie Commadore and Vicki Littman was our Co-Captains for color war. No one could scream louder than Richie! Toyland, White Victory!!!!! Who can forget Dale the counselor who could always hit the roof of the gym with a softball, Andy Santa, Aerosmith's "Dream On", or bellysliding in the mud during one of So. Windham's famous summer rainstorms? How about our stand-up routine Lemo. Lemus and Messina do Mitch and Arnie for the talent show. We always got the crowd going. How about big Dan Martineau, Tuna, Tuna!! Those were great times for sure! I am married now, with a son (7) and a wonderful wife! We are now looking into sending him to camp, but there is nothing out there like a Camp Kendale. I hope to hear from some of you and look forward to maybe coming to a camp reunion! Bye for now!

I still keep in touch with many of the friends I made at camp and was lucky enough to run into Mitch Strauss several years ago (my son, Ross, who is now 10, started camp when he was 8 years old - and Mitch, quite by accident, was running operations at Camp Walt Whitman at that time!} My husband and I live in Massachusetts with my son and occasionally his daughter, Erica who is 13 years old. I spent 4 summers in camp, only one as a camper, but being at Kendale was the greatest experience of my youth(Not that I'm that old now!). Comments: My brother Neal told me about this site. Great job. I was at Camp from '71 to '74 and returned as a couselor in '77. Kendale for good or bad was a big part of my youth. I can remember so many of the names mentioned and the people pictured. Mitch Lemus, I can remember your name, but I can't picture your face. Can you post a picture? I bunked on and off with Andy Santamaria, Ritchie Lefkowitz, Andy Stauss and that group. I was on that waiters trip to Boston that Andy mentioned. I can't remember Boston or which car I was in, but I do remember that we were in the car when we heard the speech. Almost all traffic had stopped and we pulled the car over in utter shock that we were actually hearing Nixon resign. Now I am a lawyer in private practice in Manhattan and live in New Jersey with my wife and two children (6 and 9). I think about camp now and then. I do occassionaly see Claudia and Burt Glick and hear about the Cooper, Horowitz and Vigdor familys.

Comments: My brother Josh & I were at Kendale from '82 to '85. Kendale memories are some of the best I have. Color War, Evening Activity (Capture the Flag!), Mt. Park, Olympics, Ron D'Gon, Camper Counselor Cookout (Onions, potatoes, tomatoes, peas and corn!), bug juice, Miss Kendale Pageant, friday night services, softball games, days of at the Willie and nights at Pizza House (square pieces). Arnie, Mel, Uncle Marty - they were all the best! Would love to hear from fellow alum!

Comments: Camp Kendale represents for me some of the best memories of my childhood. I made some great friends there, most of whom I have lost touch with. I am pleased to see that the Website is catching on and people are signing the guestbook. I am a commercial lawyer living in South Florida with my wife Lynda (Kendale, 78 forward) and two sons, Noah (3) and Dustin (5 1/2). I hope that I can find a Summer Camp for them when they are ready that is as fun as Kendale was for me. Thanks to Mitch Lemus who did a great job putting the site together. I would love to hear from old friends.

Comments: One of my favorite weekly trips at Kendale was to Mountain Amusement Park. We stayed at the park through dinner whereas other trips we returned to Kendale in the afternoon. I remember the old wooden roller coaster, the carousel, mini-golf, the train, the haunted house, and relaxing on the chair lift. The return to camp was always eventful with sick counselors and campers. Unfortunately the park closed to the public in 1987 but you can check out the memorial website at: http://members.tripod.com/~ejacques/mtpark/mtpark.htm

Comments: This is fantastic. My first summer (71) at Kendale I was just a baby in mother's arms and we lived in the infirmery. My father was the nature counselor. I missed 75 and 76 then returned from 77 to 84. I think I lived in every boys bunk. I remember most: my bunkmates, trips to Rhode Island, Mystic, softball games against other camps, color war, scavenger hunts, singout, services (Sugar Mountain) at the lake, not swimming in the lake, ping pong, art classes and inspections.

Comments: This is totally unbelievable that I have found all of you. I can't tell you how many great memories I have of this camp. I went there from 1968 through 1980 I think. Some of you are to young to remember the old days with Norman Kent, Jeffrey Rosner, Cathy Ladman, Ricthie Comodore. That camp was my life and now the time has come for my little girl to start her first year at sleep away camp. Very cool! Well, I hope this message reaches the right people because I am not very good at the Internet stuff. Love, Vickie

Comments: I can't believe this-when I first got my computer I checked to see if Kendale alumni had a web page- I am so excited to have found this. Actually, my husband found it by searching for his name. (Roger Slade) For all you alumni-hi and great to read about you! I have some counselors in there, Carol and Ruth. Remember me! The really bratty one! Well, I have two boys now and it's payback time. Did you arrange for that? Hi Jill, Karen, Andy, Mitch and everyone else. Mitch Lemus-thank you so much-This is truly great.

Comments: Mitch, A minor error on home page. Kendale was located in South Windham, not Willimantic. I just realized after all this time! Still considering reunion plans. Maybe we can find a bigger and nicer place than the last time (all due respect to those who planned last time). To all former campers and counselors: If you have any accurate Color War data available please E-Mail me at acsdyl9forbid@mailexcite.com. Maybe Mitch and I can set up section on home page.

I SPENT SOME GREAT SUMMERS AT KENDALE FROM 1978-81 & 83. I CAN STILL TASTE THAT UNIQUE FLAVOR OF A "PIZZA HOUSE" PIZZA. I MAY HAVE SOME PHOTOS I CAN SEND IN I'LL CHECK INTO IT.

I am now an independent marketing consultant for high tech firms. I don't have my own website; the above site is my husband's personal (and rather dated) site, primarily filled with pictures of our son. (My email address from that site may be out-of-date.)

Comments: Was just signing the "I'm O.K. your Y2K" guest book and stumbled upon this one. Am glad I don't have a time limit like the phone shack at Kendale. My brother Mitchell and I attended Kendale in 1980-81 but we just got our laundry back. Hey Mitch I'm Missing a red white and blue tube sock. My mother swears the nametags were properly affixed. My therapist thought I should find out if any other campers have nightmares about a large blond curly haired man named Mel claiming he was a little girl camper. Enjoyed our years at Kendale and would like to hear from anyone who attended the same years, please contact Mitchell or Jason Weissberg at "thatguy@cmn.net". Would also like to hear from anyone interested in joining a class action lawsuit against the creators of Tetherball, as we both suffer from tether carpal syndrome. Mitchell ran into Jill Strauss in Steamboat Springs, CO in a guitar class at the local college. Look for the album and tour next spring. While Jill prefers classic rock and country Mitchell likes gangster rap and goes by the stage name "Jewpac Shalom" But seriously...It became all too clear that the world is so small as Mitchell and Jill were working for the Steamboat Ski and Resort company. It may never rain at Kendale but it always SNOWS in Steamboat!!Ski you soon.

I guess I can't recall the name of the bunk during one year. My last year was 1973 or 1974. My folks worked at the camp. My father was the stewart in the kitchen, (he did not cook); and my mother eventually took over the canteen when Ruffie past away.

Comments: Mitch - well I've got my siblings on board. Andy & I were discussing how to expand the site. Lets chat about all the ideas - you can e-mail me. And let's get some input from everyone. How intensive is it to make the kendale site like your pen-pixel site? We'd like a color war area, a story of the month, an I remember when, camp songs, Where's the dorse?, Find other Kendalers, etc... See what you've gotten yourself into?? Let me know how to help. Steve Fisher has graceously allowed his "Great Escape" story to be the 1st in our "story of the month" section. Write soon!
