Second Annual Latino Book Awards Announced.
The Latino Literary Hall of Fame announces the winners of it's book awards that were presented at the BookExpo America 2000 in Chicago.
Chicago, IL, June 1, 2000 --- To honor the many positive contributions being made to the world of Latino Literature by publishers and writers, the Latino literary Hall of Fame announced the winners of it second annual book awards at the BookExpo America 2000 in Chicago at McCormick Place. Awards were made to books-with a publication date of 1999-in a wide variety of categories. The awards were presented on June 1 during the 2000 Latino Book Summit sponsored by the Latino Literary Hall of Fame and the Latino Book & Family Festival. And the winners are …

This year's distinguished judges were Robert Con Davis-Undiano, Neustadt Professor, Presidential Professor and executive director of World Literature Today, University of Oklahoma; Elisa and Leno Díaz, former school board member and bilingual education administrator (respectively) and elementary school teachers; Karin Kiser, founder/executive director, Kiser & Associates, providing marketing services for the Spanish book industry in the United States; Dr. Jorge Mariscal, associate professor of Literature, University of California, Dan Diego, and author; Ruebén Martínez, owner of Martínez Books & Arts, Santa Ana, CA; Oscar Reyes, editor, El Pregonero, Washington, D.C.; Rodd Rodriguez, president of The Rodd Group and creator of Feria Inernacional del Libro-San Juan (Puerto Rico); and Requel Roque, owner, downtown Book Center, Miami FL.
The Latino Literary Hall of Fame was founded in 1999 to promote excellence in Latino literature. In addition to the book awards, the Latino Literary Hall of Fame hosted the 2000 Latino Book Summit at the BookExpo America in Chicago on June 1. At this year's Latino Book Summit, publishers and book sellers received information from industry experts on the fast growing Latino market in the United States, what is new in book publishing for Latinos in the United States and in Latin America and Spain, valuable information on distribution and more. Latina Magazine was co-sponsor of the awards luncheon.
The Latino Book & Family Festival, the event co-sponsor, will hold book and cultural festivals in Los Angeles, Chicago and San Bernardino in 2000. In 2001, festivals will also be held in San Diego, New York and Texas.
