BROWN'S RODGERS TOPS CITY LEAGUE SCORERS

By Jack Jackson

Pepper Rodgers, Brown High's free-scoring guard, dumped in 19 points Thursday night against Grady to run his game total to 40, a mark which places him in the lead among City League basketball point-makers in both total points and per-game average.

The stocky youngster had earlier tallied 21 times against Roosevelt. His average thus is 20 per game.

Due in a great part to Rodgers' scoring, the Rebels top the team offensive department with a 54-point average in two starts. Roosevelt holds a slim lead in team defense, having limited two rivals to an average of 34 points per game.

Trailing Rodgers in the individual statistics are Colvin Heist, of Murphy, and Jack Odum, of Smith. Heist ranks second in total points with 30 in two outings, while Odum bucked 16 against Bass in his club's lone loop outing to earn the runner-up spot as far as game average is concerned.

Others with better than 10 per game records are Heist, 15; Ken Martin, Roosevelt, 14.5; and Joe Webb, Brown, and even 10.

Here are the team averages thus far, with offensive mark listed first and defensive last:

Brown - 54-36; O'Keefe - 35-41.5; Grady - 31.5-57; Smith - 24-37; Bass - 40.7-35.3; Roosevelt - 41.5-34; Murphy - 43-38.

This week's schedule finds the two leaders - Brown and Murphy - in action twice each within the loop. The Rebs battle Smith Wednesday and Bass Saturday and the Eagles tie into Roosevelt Tuesday and Grady Friday. In addition, Murphy meets Marist Saturday at Marist.
