CYCLONE OF B.H.S. ROARS TO 51-6 WIN
Davis, Elliott, McCalley, Mizell and Donahue Scoring Stars
By Dave Jenkins
Driving in steam roller fashion, led by mad dashing runners, the Hurricane swept out of Boys' High and left a wrecked Decatur eleven in its path Friday at Spiller, as it roared to a 51-6 triumph.
The plucky little Decatur aggregation scored a touchdown in the first quarter, led the Cyclone for some time, but the fury of Coach Shorty Doyal's boys soon overtook them and Decatur just played the game out from the last of the second quarter.
Doyal rushed a sextet of backs who pounded the weak Decatur line, tore it to shreds and left with 408 yards gained from the line of scrimmage, with seventeen first downs to three.
It was first Chick Donohue who stepped to honor by outdistancing a trio of Decatur tackles after he had been led safely by his interference, past the line of scrimmage, as he darted on for forty-four yards and Boys' High's first score.
That put the Hurricane to roaring, and before the half was up Decatur had gone under 20 to 6. Eight touchdowns all together were counted by charges of Shorty Doyal, and five came in the second half with the DeKalb lads merely staying in the game.
After Donohue raced the forty-four yards for a score, McCally got a marker from the four-yard line; Luke Mizell smashed the line for one from the three-yard line; Wink Davis stepped twenty yards to score; Elliott outran the foe for twenty-six yards and a touchdown; Davis made another run, chasing twenty-four yards for the sixth touchdown and as the shades of darkness came on Mizell went over from the three-yard mark for touchdown No. 7, and also made touchdown No. 8 from the five-yard line.
The hard charging of Wink Davis and Emmett Elliott were the biggest offensive threats. Wink stepped 101 yards and was not halted for no gain on any occasion he ran with the ball. Captain Elliott was the same. He crashed at the Decatur line and amassed 98 yards. McCalley got 66 yards and Donohue had 75 with his 44-yard run for the first Hurricane touchdown featured. Luke Mizell had 38 yards and Howard 19.
Coach Doyal sent substitute after substitute in the battle, wearing down the Decatur crew, most of whom were forced to stay in throughout the battle.
Fans who watched the proceedings were amazed at the power of the Boys' High team. Decatur just last week held Darlington to a 7 to 0 score and was expected to give quite a bit of resistance to the Hurricane. It did look like it for a good while but they finally had to retreat at such a gale.
Penalties aided Decatur in scoring its touchdown in the first quarter, a bad punt which Decatur recovered on Boys' High 21-yard line, and a 15-yard penalty followed by a 5-yard setback, and Flynt's drive from the 1-yard line netted the Decatur score.
Soon afterwards, Boys' High came back and Donohue starting on what appeared to be an end run, cut back at left tackle, with McCalley, Davis and Elliott blocking neatly and Chick, as his mates call him, dodged and spinned his way into the open and shifted out of the hands of the safety man.
The first quarter ended 6-all. At the start of the second quarter a bad punt gave Boys' High the ball on the DeKalb boys' 24-yard stripe. McCalley tore off 11. Elliott smashed the line for 7 and Davis made 1, hence McCalley ripped over for a score and Boys' High was on its way to an easy victory.
Katz was an especially outstanding linesman. This veteran flankman made tackle after tackle and on one occasion intercepted a lateral pass. Nash on the other flank was doing fine work.
Smith and S. Flynt did good work for Decatur.
