Attached is a picture of the 1st grade class of Peeples Street Elementary school , many of whom went on to Brown. The occasion was to welcome Mr. Fred Snite, a polio victim . He was referred to as" the man in the iron lung". Mr. Snite was a project of our class and our teacher took us to the train station to see him as he passed through Atlanta on his way to Warm Springs, Ga. for treatment. I am the one on the far left waving! Mr. Snite was from a wealthy Chicago family and a graduate of Notre Dame. He was a big football fan and attended all the games in his iron lung which was placed in a makeshift trailer near the football field. Grantland Rice, the sports writer, referred to Snite as the " 5th Horseman".
Thanks !
