Well, after staring at the pile of rally paperwork for about a month as there were other things to do, I’ve finally decided to wrap things up and get the rally finished. Besides all the work before the event, there’s a lot to be done after.
First off, I need to thank the participants who took a chance with a new rallymaster on the ‘other side’ of the state. I received mostly positive feedback, and this is the reason we’ll host the event again next year. Look for a summer format to avoid local traffic. The roads may not diverge in a yellow wood, but they will be less traveled.
Thanks also go out to Shiloff’s, who took a break from their west coast vacation to work registration and four checkpoints. At the end of the rally all my paperwork was handed to me in order and ready to mail. Skippy Kleckner took time off from his PRO rally schedule to come out a few weeks before the event to measure the course (which the scores prove he did a great job on) and he also worked four checkpoints at the event. Pete Padden and Tom Woodside came over with all the equipment and then split up to work two checkpoints each. We think Tom will be looking for a 1st gen. RX-7 after borrowing our newly acquired 1984 GSL-SE for the day.
I knew it was going to be interesting event when during pre-check the night before, checking the second half first, I cooked a corner leading into the very last checkpoint and ended up nose down in a gully, stuck on a culvert, with a bent rim and two mangled tires. For $20 some local teenagers towed me out, I put the spare on in place of the bent rim and limped home with a wicked cut in the side wall of the other front tire, but it held. Put the snow tires on that night, got an alignment the next morning, and away we went.
Just before checkpoint three, however, a road was closed. We flagged down the competitors, gave them an extra pause, made the road a free zone, and sent them on their way. However, we were the crew for the next checkpoint, so it had to be scrubbed. Checkpoint five was also pulled due to a bad mileage, but 14 checkpoints were scored, which wasn’t bad as we were working with four crews who were constantly moving to stay ahead of the pack.
I’ll skip all the horror stories of the route; all I’ll say is that their was only one balk allowance due to local traffic (a hayride of all things), and that the only deer collected was by our sweep team, and that was on the way home. The truck’s OK, and the deer left the scene under it’s own power. Nobody got terribly lost, and we were able to leave the restaurant by the time I told them we would was they stayed open late for this event.
When it was all said and done, we had three Equipped teams at 13, 14, and 16 points. Reviewing the control logs showed that Fisher/Moran had really taken a 1 early and not a 3 late at a control, and thus they moved into fist place with 12 points to Harkcom’s 13. Todd and Casey took limited class in the sweep vehicle, with Casey driving Todd’s truck, and Todd navigating for only the second time. Upon watching their cornering technique coming into checkpoint 2-4, I think we have a potential PRO rally team here. Worden and Robinette won stock when the always dangerous team of Harjung and Bennett ran through a transit at cast and came into the last control of the first half way early. How come this never happens when I’m running against them? Our only novice team, consisting of my company’s Quality Department Administrative Assistant and her daughter, took first by default even after leaving early. Seems they had as much fun as anyone, which is the whole idea for running these events.
