Competitors and workers:

The third edition of the Son of Sno*Drift was run on Saturday, January 13th. There were some similarities to the previous two runnings and a few new twists.

First off; the roads were not as slippery and icy as they were two weeks prior when the route was finalized. However, in some of the more distant reaches of the route the roads remained quite slippery as trees did a nice job of shading the roads from the effects of daytime sunlight (this is, of course, as opposed to nighttime sunlight). We had been experiencing one of the snowiest and coldest winters on recent record. Unfortunately, the weather brought daytime highs into the upper 30s (F) for most of the two weeks leading up to the day of the rally. This made the roads muddy and mushier but it still presented a challenge to the drivers (and mileage "factoring" for the navigators). Now instead of just snow and ice on the roads there was a good mix of mud. This again was bad - the cars were going to get dirty.

In all 21 competitors took to the route; starting, at the Mexico Lindo restaurant, in Waterford. There were 10 - yes count 'em - 10 Novice teams. There were two teams (well three if you count the chairman) who brought their ProRally cars and used this event as a shake down run. Mike Purzycki brought his monster Jeep and the Woodsides brought out their Dodge Shadow (former Krolikowski car). Young Greg was behind the wheel and was all grins - all night.

There were teams from all over Lower Michigan entered. We also had teams from Ontario and Ohio; and an entrant from the UP. Awards were given out to the top three placements in Novice. 3rd with 754 points were Ben MacRae and Tim Shandonay. 2nd Novice were Gary and Eric Pike (who e-mailed me the night before, asking if they could enter the day of) with 333 points. Novice winners were Jeff and Ellie Feit. This is their last chance to run (together at least) in Novice - they have lost their "amateur status". Interestingly, of the three rallies they have run, all of them have been Son of Sno*Drift. Their total score of 169 was good enough for 5th overall and would have taken 2nd in Stock. I later learned that they have been taking lessons from...

Perennial Detroit Region champs Worden and Robinette with 103 points won stock class. Kay and Bennett weren't far behind, with 202. Hopkinson and Kurth beat the Woodsides in Limited with a score of 620 (to 796).
The Equipped class had three teams; with Jeff and Darleen Boris, visiting from western Michigan, taking third (60). Second were (father/son) Dave and Daniel Harkcom with 29 points. 29 points after 24 controls in some of the sloppiest, slipperiest conditions is a phenomenal accomplishment. Which brings us to the impossible. This rally has been run three times - and three times Rob Moran has won it. This also marked the second year in a row that Bruce Fisher would take home the winner's trophy. These two accumulated an amazing score of 20 points (12 seconds) in penalty! I would not have been able to run that close in the car I used to lay-out the route and even knowing where all the controls were! What makes their win all the more amazing is the vehicle they used - a rusty old, clapped out POS, Datsun 510 wagon (that's right, Datsun - not Nissan). This butterscotch rust bucket gets lighter and lighter every time I see it - not from exotic materials but from more rust falling off!

A special award went to the team that got stuck the most. Sanjay Ramadoss and Madhan Ramaswa (called car #14 for obvious reasons) took home the coveted "Deep S*** - 2001" kid's snow shovel. These guys referred to themselves as the "Indians in the German car" as I tried to pronounce their names. I kept asking for interesting stories and tales of people falling off the road - but there were few to report. I think Mike Purzycki helped our Indian friends back onto the road (at least) once and sweep had to help a couple in a Focus that needed it. Not pointing any fingers, but a little more quizzing brought out the possibility that the Focus had an Ontario plate on it. If so, I traded e-mail notes with our Canadian friend and told him his summer tires were not a good choice. I'm sure he figured I was serious. Beyond that, it seemed there were few competitors that actually got off course. (I would like to think this is due to the detailed route instructions; and mileage at all instructions.) This didn't stop one of our control workers from distinguishing himself by stuffing his truck into a big snow bank while following the course-opening car. Bryan Murphy was awarded the set of matching flashlights in the hope that they may help him find his way a little better next time. (In Bryan's defense, he didn't have a navigator to tell him where the next control was and, when he encountered two cars blocking the road - he thankfully chose the snow rather than us.)

I must thank all the workers who helped put this rally on. Bob Martin again did the scores in record time and worked two controls. Jim and Marianne Mickle worked three controls and Jim helped precheck the route instructions. Pete Padden and his daughter worked three controls and Pete prechecked the route. Mary and Jerry Shiloff did registration and worked three controls. Chuck Padden and John Gingrich, Joe and Marylin Andreini and John and Barb Parrot all worked three controls (not all at the same time at the same place - of course). Bryan Murphy helped by prechecking route instructions, working one control and helped with course opening (for a little while). Rich Line and sons did sweep - and pulled Bryan's truck out. Randy Love and Lu Henry worked 2 and a half controls. They arrived late to their first assignment because they were scouting out their later assignments. Later in the night as they were parading to their final assignment they stuffed their car into a big snow bank. We had to yank them back on to the road not just once but twice! And to add injury to insult at their middle assignment they hit a home air conditioner unit that had been conveniently left by the side of the road. I will be thinking twice about letting Randy be the wheel man next time. Finally, Jeff Hribar rode with me and kept me on course. We will be running the Sno*Drift ProRally together so it was a great opportunity for us to work together before then.

I spoke with most everyone after the rally and I did not get a single negative comment. All felt the roads were great, the speeds were just right and, unlike last year, all the route instructions and checkpoint slips were exactly right. There weren't even complaints about the short breaks. The competitors were allowed about 30 minutes at each of the two breaks during the rally. If a team had to buy time or were held-up in some way, this would eat into their already short break. There were two reasons I chose to do this. One was to assure that we got everything done (scores, awards, stories, etc) before the restaurant closed. As it was we crammed 190 miles of fun rally roads into about 8 hours.

If you didn’t join us this year – maybe you will next time.
