Michigan's Water Wonderland

Plan now to attend the 48th running of the most prestigious rally in North America! Sanctioned by the DETROIT REGION SCCA a two day 600 mile event over the best rally roads in Michigan!

This year's POR will be run entirely at night! Beginning in Alma, Michigan, home town of our major sponsor, TOTAL PETROLEUM on Friday evening POR '97 will wind its way to the half-way point in beautiful Boyne City, Michigan. After a 12 hour layover, the rally will return to Alma for an Awards Buffet Sunday morning.

The roads will be smooth, challenging, and will encompass many old POR Stages with historic names like "Tin Shanty", "Sawdust Pile", "Lost Cabin Trail" and other nostalgic trails from POR's colorful past!

Lots of prizes, lots of camaraderie, four sponsored buffets, hospitality and administration by the FRIENDS OF POR, a fraternal organization, dedicated to the care and perpetuity of this most exciting of all rallies!

The route can be traversed by any good sports sedan, equipped for night rallying. Rules will generally follow thise of the SCCA Tour Rallies with noted exceptions. Classes will b ehte usual Equipped, Limited, Stock, plus Vintage and Novice. Generous trophies will be awarded to all class and overall winners.

1997 POR Bulletin

July 5, 1997
This year's PRESS ON REGARDLESS RALLY is complete. We have been over the entire route four times and on the week of June 24th JOE ANDREINI (Chief of Scoring) and I carefully measured the course in the Sube' Outback. Joe who had never been over the course made a few minor changes in wording, eliminated a few "redundancies", standardized the format, and generally cleaned up what BOB FOREN, JEFF BORIS, TOM WOODSIDE, JOHN WICKENS and I had laid out over the past year and a half. Now it's done, and awaits only a pre-check by an "E" and "S" crew at night for a final OK.

This will be the first "night" POR in many years. During the 60's and 70's we always ran at night, some times as many as THREE NIGHTS covering up to 1500 miles! The '97 POR should be a piece of cake! We're only covering 600 miles in TWO NIGHTS!

Since POR '97 IS running at night, we will be using "reflective numbers", this will make car identification a bit difficult at some of the "closed controls". We ask that competitors keep their numbers clean and legible. There will be over 60 Controls! We will make every effort to retain and score every one!

POR '97 will require full night rally equipment. There are very few "street lights" on the route! Conversely there are a lot of wild game on the roads at night. In the areas we will be traversing, deer, raccoons, bear possums, etc. Be sure your car has adequate lighting to allow yuou to stop in the assured clear distance ahead! All of our officials and many of our workers will be equipped with HAM Radios. PAUL BACINA and JIM CALLON will be our Communications Chiefs. DICK COLE will be our "fast sweep" and AARON CONNER will be our "slow sweep". Let's hope you never see them on the route! TOM WOODSIDE wil be Car "00" i.e. running at least an hour ahead of the rally, making sure the course is clear and safe and can be followed by the instructions. Tom will also be at all rest stops should you have questions or problems with the course. Car "0" (Gene Henderson) will be course opening and will be at least 15 to 30 minutes ahead of Car #1 to ascertain the course is clear, controls are properly placed, and timing clocks in sync with WWV.

Attached are schedules for the rally and listings for accomodations for the weekend. Competitors and Workers are responsible for their own arrangements. I suggest you make reservations ASAP insofar as rooms are always in short supply. In Boyne City make sure you advise the motel owners that you will require an "early check in" on Saturday morning (9/13) around 10 AM. Also advise them you will be checking out by 5 PM.

For the buffets at Alma on Friday evening and Sunday morning and at Boyne City on Saturday evening, YOU WILL REQUIRE TICKETS! These should be in your packets at registration on Friday. MARY SHILOFF is in charge of this function (she will be at registration). There is a $5.95 charge for the "breakfast buffet" at Boyne City on Saturday morning at the Wolverine Dilworth Inn. There will also be a "cash" bar opening at 7 AM.

The three Control Layout Captains are JEFF BORIS (Rallymaster), BOB FOREN and SUSIE BEAUVAIS. All workers will be assigned to one of these teams and will "leap frog" the route as integral units throughout the event. All teams will be in radio contact with each other and the Chairman (Gene Henderson).

Car numbers will be assigned by a "seeded" draw prior to the event and will be available at registration or before if possible.

Remember not to shine your rally lights into houses, be courteous to civilian traffic (they have just as much right to be there as you have).Take all your complaints through channels, don't hassle the volunteer workers. We will post a list of protest committee members at registration. All queries, timing claims etc. will be channeled through DICK COLE & TOM WOODSIDE. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES are competitors to present claims or arguments directly to the Scoring Committee. All claims & protestsare to be in writing and given to Dick or Tom.

We are expecting quite a large entry this year, partly because of the upcoming 50th Anniversary in 1999. Present plans call for a "dress rehearsal" of the anniversary event in 1998. We plan a 3 DAY EVENT in '98 and '99 (more time for parties!) So make your plans early!

We look forward to seeing you in Alma on the 12th of September. Remember to thank our sponsors when you see them GARY DOWNING of TOTAL PETROLEUM and BRAD SCHADE of MAC SAM SPECIALTIES (Boyne City).
