Running in the limited class, Greg Lester and Ken Swarm won the second event on the CenDiv Divisional schedule, the Moonlight Monte held Saturday evening, February 22, 1997. Gene Henderson and Jeff Boris were the equipped class winners, with Bryan and Caprica Murphy taking Stock and Colin Botha/Bryan Pickett winning the novice class.
This years version of the Moonlight Monte was 140 miles long with 22 scheduled open controls. Warm weather and rain in the week before the event resulted in very rough roads and caused extensive flooding in the area. On Friday night the weather changed dramatically, and freezing rain and a couple of inches of snow covered the course at the start, making for rough and slippery going for the competitors. Flooded roads in the second half of the rally required three re-routes and cost 2 legs.
Two additional legs were discarded. One was because too many competitors did not do a mileage turn just before a control, causing the overiding rule to be invoked. The other, because of an error on the leg slip.

Moonlight Monte Competitors and workers,
The entire committee for Moonlight Monte would like to thank you for participating in our rally. We sincerely hope that you enjoyed it and will return next year to do it again. In addition, we hope that if you enjoyed it, you will tell your friends and have them come too. It was great to have entrants from five states. Also nice was having a large group of novices. Lets all encourage more people to try our hobby and share the fun.
We plan to hold the 1998 event on February 21. We plan to continue in the same area with the same general format. Hopefully, we won't have the flooding and rough roads next year, just lots of good, plowed snow.

We dropped leg 13 and 19 because of the re-routes caused by the flooding. Leg 5 was dropped due to the critique slip missing the required three speeds. Leg 8, which had a mileage turn just in front of a control was dropped because too many E and L competitors drove straight into the control rather than taking the correct route, and making the turn.

I especially want to thank the many friends that worked to make the event happen. My special thanks to all the Amateur Radio Operators who provided communications and ran controls during the event. In addition to making it possible to have 22 controls, it also made it possible to do the re-routes around the floods. In addition, it made my job much less nerve racking as I always knew what was happening and that the controls were in place properly, and in good time.
