At the break, after 9 of 22 controls, the team of Scott Harvey Jr and Jim Mickle were ahead of Gene Henderson and Rob Moran by just one point. With the Dave Parps/Greg Lester and Ken Kovach/Mark Rinkel teams tied for third 4 points back. 28 cars all on the same route did attract some local attention, all of a positive nature except for one County Deputy who thought a few of the front runners he observed may have been exceeding the CAST (37) in their efforts to climb a rather suddenly steep hill.He observed with one of the rallymasters then continued his rounds.
At the finish all 22 controls were scored, thanks to the computer wizardry of Joe and Marilyn Andreini. And all competitors save one made the finish (the BMW M-3 of Shivers/Clarke not really at a liking for the 77% gravel roads). Class winners included the team of Harvey/Mickle winning the equipped class with 25 points, last years overall winners and again winning limited class the "Jims" Shaffer/Fekete in their Jeep Cherokee with 56. The "Richards" Worden/Robinette won stock class with only 119 points, while the novice team of Onela/Golubek took a class win with 314. Eric Jones (alias Rex Karrs) and Bill Potvin (Terry Fied) entered their beautifully prepared 1964 MGB in vintage class and cranked Curta all day (now that's rallying!).
Some of the other notables were the father/son and father/daughter teams of Jeff and Nic Boris and Ben and Rachel Price. Both doing well, Rachel on her first event and still on her learner's permit! Husband and wife Mark and Donna Rinkel navigated for Ken Kovach and Lynn Dillon respectively and all bets were off as they tied for third place each 52 points.
