The crews left the Waterford Hills race track at about 7:30 PM on Friday the 10th of July, in search of checkpoints. The teams seemed to be able to follow the course all right, though some scores were better than others. The idea is to arrive precisely at the correct time at each checkpoint. Not as easy as it may seem. Ask those who try.
The only unusual event of the rally occurred right in front of a checkpoint manned by Rob Moran. A crew of construction workers dumped a boat load of nails right in the road! After several minutes of clean-up and traffic back-up the later cars worked their way into the control area. Careful usage of Time Allowance slips kept scores reasonable for those effected.
After some 50 miles of some nice PAVED roads, north of the track, the competitors arrived at a family restaurant to eat, share stories and compare scores. Weather conditions were again ideal and, just as last year, the competitors were treated to a nice sunset as they transited to the finish. Scores were dutifully tabulated by Bob Martin and revealed the overall winners to be Charles and Peggy Brown with a score of 198. The Browns ran in the Stock class, as they have previous experience in rallies. Most of the other competitors ran in the Novice class, which is really the target group for this rally. Aside from first place in Stock, trophies were awarded to the top three placing Novice crews. Third in N would be James Foster and Dianna Rowland with 379. Second in N was taken by Darryl Newman and Laurie Bush (336). Winners in Novice, who learned a lot from last year's event, would be Steffanie and Frank Schwartz (284).
The other Stock class team had a special competitor onboard. Mike Burke, to my knowledge, was the only person to compete in all three events on this Waterford weekend. Mike navigated for Cetta Brown on Friday, raced his Spec Racer, and blistered the Solo course with his GLH, on Saturday and Sunday. Throw in the fact that he was the Solo Safety Steward (and probably worked a corner during the races); you really have to take your hat off to this guy. Way to go Mike!
I would like to thank all those who helped make this event happen, especially the organizers of the whole weekend. Specific to the rally, I wish to thank: Pete Padden, Jim and Marrianne Mickle, Mark and (daughter) Rennee Henderson, Doug Harvey, Jim Fekete, The Murphy's (Bryan, Cappy, Charlotte and Patrick), Rob Moran, Bob Martin and Michele Grimm. I also wish to apologize (seems that's all I've been doing lately, for my tardiness) for the lateness of these results. Scores for the rally follow. If you did not compete this year, make it a point to come out next year. The event is as easy, or as hard, as you want to make it. Ask any of those who have run it.
Thank you,
Scott Harvey - HTOSDI Rally Chairman
