Thumbs Up XI CenDiv Rally Results

Jim Mickle

In unseasonably warm, clear fall weather in Michigan, Dave Parps and Rob Moran won a close fought victory on the 211 mile Thumbs Up, the final event in the CenDiv series of 12 events. They finished with 28 points for 27 controls, for the event that was contested almost totally on unpaved roads. Starting in Imaly City Michigan at 1:00 in the afternoon, the rally went basically North for the first section which was 113 miles long with 15 controls. The 32 teams returned to Imlay city for a break, before starting the second night section that went basically south of Imlay City. Another 100 miles and another 15 hidden controls awaited the contestants before they were to return to Imlay City for the finish.

Jeff and Deb Secor lead by a slight margin of 4 points at the break, having 12 as compared to 16 for Parps/Moran and Kormendi/Shue. At the end, Dave Parps and Rob Moran were the winners by a mere 2 points over John Kormendi and Rick Shue who were running together for the first time.

In Limited, Jim Shaffer and Jim Fekete led Greg Lester and Ken Swarm 23 to 27 at the break, portending a close fought second section. It was closer than anybody could have imagined, with the final result being a 48 point tie, which was broken on the basis of legs won, giving the win to Lester and Swarm.

In Stock, the eventual winners Keith Ramsey and Donna Sytnak had 97 points at the break, which gave them a lead of 17 point over their nearest competitor. At the end they had 157 points to best Robert Kay/Mike Bennett who had 173 points.

With eleven novice teams, some of whom were running their last event as novices, close scores could be expected. We were not disappointed. Tom Birchard and Frank Arello were first with 380 points. Second were the POR(r) novice winners John Twichel and Kevin Bulow with 415. Also taking home awards were Adam Spieszny/Wojciech Dlugoszews with 909 and Keith Kurth/Harold Hopkinson with 1054. Just out of an award position, with 1060 points were Travis Patrick/Joseph Wright.

The hard luck award has to go to Richard Foster and William Secrest who went off the road just before control 22, flattening two tires, which prevented their continuing. With the help of sweep, and control worker, Biff Baydown, they got the tires to a service station and were able to drive back to the finish to enjoy the festivities.

Most everyone seemed to have a good time, and expect to be at the Son of Sno*Drift, being presented by Scott Harvey Jr on January 15th.

Jim Mickle, Rallymaster

November 15, 1999

Dear Thumbs Up Competitor or Worker

Thank you for coming out and making the 1999 Thumbs Up a success. The entire committee and I hope that you enjoyed the event and had fun. I know that we did.

Enclosed are the final results and a competitor survey. I would greatly appreciate it if you would complete and return the survey. It will help us try to do a better job next year.

As you know, no rally can be done by one person. I would like to thank the following for all the work that made the event possible.

Greg and Tom Woodside for developing the course and making sure that all the controls were in place on time.

Jim Mickle for measuring the course and doing all all the paperwork (route instructions, leg slips, schedules, generals, etc.).

Pete Padden for the printing.

Bob Martin for another great job of scoring.

All the other workers that ran controls and especially the sweep crew who helped get car 20 out of the ditch after he overcooked a corner just before control 22. With the help of many, especially Biff Baydown who took their flat tires into town to be remounted, they were able to get back on the road and to the finish. They planned to replace the broken windows with cardboard and drive back home to Kentucky. I apologize for not coming around at the restaurant and thank you personally, but other chairman duties kept me busy.

Again, thanks for coming and hope to see you all next year on November 11th. Please bring your friends, and make it an even bigger and better event.

Sincerely,
Marianne Mickle
Chairman
